Ecuador is a country that is trying to find a balance with their major industries and the environment. They need the oil companies and banana growers to do well because they are the biggest part of the economy. Ecuador has made strides to help the environment by changing to 90 percent hydropower. Because of this they are not burning fossil fuels, but they are still mining it. Also they have formed the Ministry of Environment (MAE) was created to systematize ecological management and concentrate efforts to protect Ecuador's natural resources.

The natural resources of Ecuador help and hurt its people. Ecuador's economy is largely based on petroleum, which accounts for about a third of the nation's export income. Fluctuations in global market prices for these products have a major impact on Ecuador's economy. The government depends on the revenue that comes from petroleum. The government of Ecuador also has plans to expand oil exploration and production. Petroleum has had some of its negative impacts. Texaco spilled some 17 million barrels of oil into the local river systems between 1964 and 1990, likely the largest oil-related environmental disaster in history.

The second resource is bananas. Ecuador is the world's largest banana exporter. About a quarter of the population is employed in agriculture. The country has one of the highest deforestation rates in South America, and one of the continent's worst environmental records. Primarily due to logging in the Costa (coastal plain) region, where forests have been turned into agricultural land, especially banana plantation.

Ecuador has the cleanest energy mix in the world. They will be using 90 percent hydropower. The last 10 percent of the energy mix will use fossil fuels just in case something goes wrong with the power grid. Ecuador will have the ability to support itself and be able to sell to others once all the hydroelectric pants are done. They were able to build all of these plants with the help of the Chinese Exim Bank. They need 70 percent of the 2.25 billion to start all of the projects. One of the hydroelectric pants the Caca Coda Sinclar is the largest one China has built outside of China, and it meets 30 percent of Ecuador’s needs.

In Ecuador there are over 300 types of potatoes found, and the people have domesticated 14 types, and are found in most markets there. For most of Ecuador potatoes are not mostly hugely popular. Most of the potatoes are grown at 3000 meters above sea level. Where they don’t have to use that many pesticides. Because of this they have very little impact on the environment. Now bananas on the other hand and their growers have had a major impact on the environment. Bananas are the major cash crop of the country, and they are one of the top exports of bananas in the world. The growers have been cutting down other trees in order to grow more. The country has one of the highest deforestation rates in South America, and one of the continent's worst environmental records. Primarily due to logging in the Costa (coastal plain) region, where forests have been turned into agricultural land, especially banana

Ecuador is a country That is trying to do the right things for its people and the future. They are joining many agreements like the Climate Change-Paris agreement. They have also made many efforts to do better with the environment. The major problem is that the two industries that make the most money for the people and the country are the worst environmental offenders. The first is the oil industry which produces so much waste and always has the potential for a spill. The other being the banana growers. They have been a major part in the defrost and logging in Ecuador. I feel that overall Ecuador with the agreements that they have joined and the Ministry of Environment (MAE) are slowly getting better. The biggest being is in constructing several hydroelectric plants. Their aim is to have one of the cleanest energy mixes in the world by generating 90 percent of its energy from hydropower once all the plants are in full operation.

Ecuador is ranked as an upper middle-income country with a mixed public-private economy. The country's economy is heavily dependent on petroleum exports and moves in lockstep with the price of oil in the world market. Fluctuations in other key export commodities, such as bananas, cocoa, coffee, cut flowers, and shrimp also exert a substantial domestic impact. The service industry, including tourism, transportation, utilities, communications, and financial services, is the largest sector, contributing almost 57 percent to the GDP. The tourism industry has grown substantially in recent years, with 4.7 percent of the work force employed in tourism or related industries in 2017. Industry contributes 35 percent of the GDP and agriculture 8 percent.
