The definition of progressivism is support for or advocacy of social reform. Based on that definition Booker T. Washington is progressive.
He says, "Casting down your bucket among my people, helping and encouraging them as you are doing on the these grounds, and to education of head, hand, and heart, you will find that they will buy your surplus land, make blossom the waste places in your fields, and tun your factories."

Well W.E.B. DuBois clearly didn't agree with Booker T. Washington because he believed that African Americans could live everyday lives and not be discriminated for their skin color. DuBois also didn't like that Washington suggests that "All black people give up, at-least temporarily, three things; being political power, civil rights, and higher education of negro youth." DuBois felt as though giving all of that up was not alright, he believed it would speed up the process of their rights being indefinitely taken from them, creating more inferiority towards them.

When it comes down to it I know Booker T. Washingtons heart was in the right place, I feel as though W.E.B. DuBois makes a more compelling approach to how to advance black civil rights. I believe that completely giving up the rights of all African American people to try and "possibly" gain them in the future is not the most beneficial approach. I believe that when W.E.B. DuBois says we fight for these rights, and we don't give up until receiving them will show that they deserve the rights just as anyone else should.

It is evident Booker T. Washington made his best efforts, and successfully contributed to the progressive movement. When he says "cast down your buckets..." he is implementing that both blacks and whites can/should work together because the end result would be much greater than that of them being separate. He felt that coming together would bring everything up, creating a better end result where everyone is treated equal.

Washington he still has every intention of doing what he can to help the African Americans to achieve more rights and freedom. When he says "Negros must insist continually, in season and out of season, that voting is necessary to modern manhood, that color discrimination in barbarism..." he is voicing how prosperity of African Americans is deserved and highly hoped for from not only him, but all African Americans.

Progressivism is the belief that men should help those who can't help themselves and fight for social reform. Although, Washington understands that there needs to be peace for both blacks and whites to prosper, it seems that he is in support of "separate, but equal" idea shown in the Atlanta Exposition Address. He states, " In all things that are purely social we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress." Washington would rather be separate, but equal, but the entire point of progressivism is to help people who have a low status, to a better, equal standing. Being separate, enforces the idea that one race is better than the other

In the Atlanta Exposition speech, Washington spoke on behalf of African American reconstruction. His concerns were to be above the grievances that Africans Americans suffered and not let that define their status in nature. Take heed to the opportunities and construct surrounded. Due to the dehumanization of american americans, his goal was to humanize African Americans in American society. Showing that, they too are law abiding and willing to die for the country. Its a genius approach to use towards a room full of white men who were looking to form a country. It may have been an emotionless construct but he was part of the progressive movement.
