This topic relates to the week 3 class about snobbery and education. We touched on the subject of cultural capital

that privileged children get from their parents and their education. This article goes against the stereotype that

private schools are so much better than state schools, stating that apparently the school books are mostly the

same and the only difference lies in class sizes. I find this very interesting, considering that in the lecture we also

touched on that stereotype of children in private schools getting a jump start in their lives. This article shows that

it might not always be so obviously true.

This article relates to week 4 and talks about students from top universities are behaving more and more like chavs or lads.

The article discusses if this relates only to an 'enthusiasm of students for fancy dress' or is it just bad taste. The article does

not make the jump to bad taste being a sign of lower class, though.

I read this article as part of researching more about the presentation topic about baby names as being

representative of class. It generally agrees with the stereotype, though the author also suggests that there

are religious, historical and other changes across generations that affect the fashionability of names.

What we might consider as a 'typical working class' name today might be very fashionable in the middle

classes when our children grow up.
