Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi wrote a letter to Lord Irwin to explain his protest plans. He was respectful toward Lord Irwin and identified him as a friend- showing he didn't want any violence. Gandhi explained his plans for the Salt March so that Lord Irwin would be informed in advance. This also drew attention to it so that there would be a response to the march.

Since the Salt Tax protest movement was so organized it continued after many people, including Gandhi, were arrested. People were committed to protesting and continuing until they got what they wanted. Since it was so organized and there were so many followers other people could take over when Gandhi went to jail and continue to protest.

A cartoon that was published in The London Graphic Illustrator depicted Gandhi salting a lion's tail. The lion represents Britain and he was treating the lion as a pet. This shows how he was using the salt march to obtain acceptance and and maybe affection from Britain.
