  • In 1931, the Japanese Empire controlled the South Manchuria Railway. In the September the Japanese claimed that the Chinese had sabotaged the railway. Using this pretense the Japanese army invaded and over ran Manchuria with Japanese forces. They removed the Chinese defensive forces and renamed the area Manchukuo

However, instead of withdrawing from Manchuria, the Japanase announced they intended to occupy more of China. They rejected the Lytton Report and resigned from the League.


    This ruined the prestige of the league and showed its helplessness against aggressor nations (Japan). It also undermined the confidence of the league officials to tackle future crises
