Lovejoy is an English Indie Rock band that quickly rose to prominence. Through an application of brass instruments and synthesisers, non-musical samples and complex polyrhythms inspired by Japanese math rock (written and performed by bassist Ash Kabosu and drummer Mark Boardman), their elevation of stereotypical indie rock is what inspires me most. Their use of multiple ambient instrumentations in their most recent album, Wake Up & It's Over, creates resounding emotional performances, and the theatrical vocal performances and absurd metaphorical lyricism (written and performed by Lovejoy's foreman, Will Gold) inspire my theatricality in performance and creation. Their prominence in online youth culture is where I first discovered their music, and their growth as a band inspires me to continue working towards my goals.

(Word Count: 123)

Little Simz, a prominent figure in modern rap and experimental and a woman of colour, inspires me greatly. Her use of traditional gospel-like harmonics and backing vocals, as well as classical instrumental groupings (including jazz, strings and orchestral), is an excellent display of innovation and not only compliments and uplifts her trap and hip-hop beats, but also deepens the instrumental and emotional texture of a piece. Her use of afro-beats is a homage to her heritage and has inspired me to consider my own musical heritage as well. Through her deliberate lyricism, solid rhythms and powerful vocal performances, Little Simz creates soulful music that tells the stories of those around her and those who inspired her and continues to be a great inspiration to my own musical narrative.
(Word Count: 128)

Will Wood's art, described as avant-garde, is experimental, genre-bending and absurd. His use of multiple chaotic musical and non-musical textures, layers of rag-tag piano, classic rock guitars, jazz piano and modern synth melodies inspires me to be experimental and openly creative in creating art. His music ranges from dark cabaret to folk to indie pop without precedent, and his theatrical vocal performances, which jump from doo-wop to screamo to unconventional applications of the voice, greatly inspire me. The inconsistent structure of his music and jarring and often gory lyrics evoke raw emotion and reflect dadaism in its truest form, which I am continuously drawn to in the consumption and creation of music. Will Wood is a prominent figure in the queer community and expresses his genuine self through his art. His expression of self encourages me to live and create unapologetically.

(Word Count: 141)

Her concept album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was a transformative cultural event characterised by artistic depth, emotional and cultural love and aesthetic devotion. Described by Nas as “pure music”, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is dubbed one of the greatest albums ever made within and beyond Hiphop music. Miseducation made room for women in hip-hop music and culture and declared hip-hop “a uniquely exquisite medium of emotional expression” (Bennett, 2015). Billboard and Vibe listed Jay-Z as the greatest rapper of all time on account of his longevity, the breadth of his accomplishments, and what he means to hip-hop from a musical, cultural and financial standpoint.

The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie Smalls, or Biggie, is widely considered one of the greatest hip-hop artists ever. His music is noted for its loose, easy flow and autobiographical lyrics, and much of his success is credited to his storytelling abilities. Born as an only child to Jamaican immigrants, Biggie's music embraces the hardships of his upbringing with "emotional honesty" (Touré, 1994), and deals with themes of crime, romance and humour. In his book 'How to Rap', Guerilla Black credits Biggie Smalls' music as being able to simultaneously "glorify the upper echelon" and "[make] you feel his struggle". Since his death, Biggie's music has been sampled and he himself payed tribute to by countless artists including the likes of Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and 50 Cent. Biggie Smalls' legend in the hip-hop community is undoubtedly one of massive impact and perpetuity.

(Word Count: 139)

Arctic Monkeys, dubbed by Radio X as one of The Best Bands of All Time (2019), is a “steadfast totem of rock’n’roll resilience” (Beaumont, 2015). In an interview with Crack Magazine, Mark Fisher expressed that Arctic Monkeys’ most significant edge is their ability to “airbrush cultural time out and appeal to this endless return and timelessness of rock.” (Broaks, 2023). Their consistency has pushed them ahead of their peers in longevity and cultural influence. Their album, AM, is one of “a string of solid records that fans have continued to relate deeply to” (O’Neill, 2018). It is considered proof that “rock’n’roll [is] still capable of dragging itself out of the swamp and evolving into wild and exotic new species.” and is largely considered “the album of the decade” (Beaumont, 2015). All of this considered, Arctic Monkeys have successfully and reverentially brought together the “largesse of modern rock sounds”. They are “probably the UK’s biggest, most culturally important band.” (O’Neill, 2018) of the modern day.

(Word Count: 164)

Los Campesinos! is described as a band, as “something of a dichotomy” (Garland, 2017). Their music, built upon “punky drums, skittering hooks and torrents of clever-but-endearing lyrics” (Doherty (2012) and “experimental and often sombre pop” (Garland, 2017), is one of the more unique sounds of the indie genre in the 21st century. Credited to a combination of this uniqueness and an “intense cult fandom” Los Campesinos! have “impressed themselves upon countless cities and scenes around the world” (Garland, 2017). Pigeonholed initially into the ‘twee’ genre due to their attempts at being “as anti-macho as possible” (Tom Campesinos!, Vice, 2017) Los Campesinos! takes pride in its “weird middle ground” (Gareth Campesinos!, Vice, 2017) of genre and American and English influences. Tom and Gareth Campesinos! the band’s lead guitarist and songwriter, and lyricist and singer, respectively, state that “Everything we do, whether we wanted it to be or not, is kind of outside of what is commercially relevant.” and “Whatever we do is what Los Campesinos! is.” (Garland, 2017)
(Word Count: 167)

Two Door Cinema Club, a Northern Irish indie rock and dance-punk band, are a staple of early 2000s indie music. Gaining a number one place on the Irish Independent Albums Chart with their record Undercover Matryn and making the top 30 on the indie album charts in England, Scotland and the U.S.A, their “shiny and impersonal, anxious and ambivalent [sound]” (Sicurella, 2022) had a significant influence on early-internet-indie. Their unique sound divulges into dance punk, techno-funk and 80’s pop, utilising “guitar-driven, post-punk hooks with dancey, electronic polish” (Phares, 2016), drones and dark synths, and “[a] current of eerily overproduced electro-pop that underscore[s]” (Sicurella, 2022) their music. Jamie Jeong of the University of Virginia’s Student Newspaper (2022) expresses that these “psychedelic layers” come together to form a “futuristic and slightly eerie tone” of “unfettered energy” (Sicurella, 2022), which can certainly be heard as inspiration in Lovejoy’s Scum and Portrait of a Blank Space.

(Word Count: 152)

Considered by most to be the most popular and influential figures of music in the modern day, The Beatles' impact on present society is "of an intensity unequaled in our culture" (Greenfield, 1975). In 2019, Forbes released a study of Spotify statistics, revealing that of the 1.7 billion streams of The Beatles' discography that year, 18 to 29-year-olds accounted for more than 47% of the listening (Beech, 2019). The staying power of The Beatles' influence is a testament to the timelessness of their music and the way it has continuously, inadvertently been "reshaping the culture" (Stephens, 2021) of youth. In 1975, The New York Times' Greenfield summarised The Beatles' phenomenal impact in a chain: "(1) the Beatles opened up rock; (2) rock changed the culture; (3) the culture changed us." Greenfield continues to say that The Beatles not only helped "make rock music a battering ram for the youth culture's assault on the mainstream" but also helped define rock music as "the music of [an] entire international generation."
(Word Count: 168)

Throughout his career, Joel has written 33 Top 40 hits, won six Grammys, and sold over 150 million records. Of his 14 album releases, 11 have been certified platinum and multi-platinum and, in the late 1990s, he tied the Beatles for the most multi-platinum albums in the United States. Inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, Joel has exhibited “stylistic daring and impeccable musicianship” (Puterbaugh, 1999). He has been an essential and significant force in popular music for more than 20 years. His discography, influenced by the likes of Ray Charles, Beethoven, the Beatles and more, is a mosaic of the many sounds he has “adopted and interpreted” in his life and is one of the “great catalogs” (Puterbaugh, 1999) of popular music in this century.
(Word Count: 172)

Man Man, an avant-garde, indie-rock quintet, is “a menagerie maybe not for the masses, but a wild concoction of equal parts carnival and heart.” (Pagano, 2015). The self-described “cult band’ (Honus Honus, Pagano, 2015) is commonly pigeonholed as a ‘joke band’, but Honus expresses that their music is “an organic project” built upon “who we are [and] the kind of lives we lived” (Suarez, 2006). The band strives to “make something that’s true to where we are in our lives at the time” (Pagano, 2015) . In an interview with Pitchfork Media, Honus reveals that his most significant influences creatively come from “being broke... and being in and out of relationships.” Contrastingly, this authenticity is the reason the band refuses to publish lyrics, stating “people can think what they want to think.
