Personal Reflection

My personal reflection is that nursing has changed over the years, but the core values have stayed the same. Nursing is a profession that requires you to put others before yourself. You cannot be selfish. You must have compassion and have a calling for what you are doing. Nursing isn't easy and has never been easy. No matter which era of nursing you discuss, there are always challenges. I think one of the largest contemporary issues in nursing is violence and burnout. I think these images are a good representation of burnout and violence. Nurses must always be cautious. I think that the future of nursing can be changed if work environments focus on preventing violence and burnout. Workplaces must make safety a priority. They must also prioritize employee satisfaction.

Nurses must work together just as a football team must work together. Without proper teamwork patients will suffer just as football teams will suffer. Nursing is tough just as football is tough. I think this relates to the other images and video because it just proves that nursing is not an individual task, it takes joining together to get the job done.

Nursing in Greece

This picture is of Greek medicine. Greek medicine was focused on God being understood by man. The Greeks believed that the Gods and Goddesses controlled health. The God of Medicine was Aesculapius. In this picture, there are many people involved which could symbolize a religious ceremony and it is obvious they are waiting on something to come help heal the patient. One-way Greek medicine has influenced today's medicine is that it was during the Greek time that disease was ruled to natural causes instead of the supernatural. In today's medicine we know that disease is natural and not a supernatural occurrence. Another way is that medicine was practiced in teams. It took a group to take care of the ill, just as it does today.

In this image you can see the nurse working with patients by way of candlelight. This just shows that nurses would do whatever they need to tend to the needs of their patients, regardless of time of day. You can also see that she is currently caring for multiple patients at one time. I think this image relates to the other images because even in the days of no technology, nurses would find ways to care for their patients to the best of their ability. The patient is always put first, just like many of these other image's show.

In this image you can see the nurse taking time to help the patient write. This means that the nurse took time out of her busy day to spend one on one time with the patient. This image relates to the other images as nurses will do whatever they need to put their patients first. Whether it means skipping a break and not eating for an entire shift or getting behind on task because they are spending additional time with a patient. Nurses always know how to make time for what is needed.

In this image you can see two nurses comforting each other as others continue to work in the background. This is impactful because it shows that nurses need to take time to care for each other in order to care for others. If they do not care for each other, then they cannot properly care for their patients. Even while caring for each other, the work does not stop. Nursing does not wait. This image relates to the other images in that nursing is a team event. You cannot nurse alone. As in the image from Greek medicine, it takes a group to get the job done. Nurses often put themselves before the patient. As in the second image, nurses will do whatever they need to get the job done.

This video gives a raw look into the inner workings of nursing and the negative side of nursing. Nursing is not always a glamorous job and can often be dangerous. Nurses are at risk of violence just as any other profession. Sometimes the risk might even be worse than other professions. In nursing, if a patient does not get what they want they can take it out of the nurse putting the nurse in dangers way. I think this video relates to the others as it shows again that nurses will put their patients before themselves even if it means that danger may occur.
