1. Out of the three issues we have explored this week, which has had the biggest NEGATIVE impact on the African American community in Baltimore? Why do you think this?

I believe that unhealthy food has had the greatest negative impact on the African-American community in Baltimore. I understand that there are other issues that exist for this community, but if you eat unhealthfully, it will shorten your life and limit your future prospects.

D. Watkins describes this issue perfectly in his vignette, "What's to Eat?". He mentions, "We are marching and protesting against police brutality, but biscuits and gravy and macaroni and cheese are probably killing us at a more alarming rate." (99) Even if we figure out the solutions to police brutality and negative influences of technology, we still are bound to a life of illness because of what we eat and where we live.

I believe that the impact on social media to other people is changing our community because when students and children like us from this generation are open to this kind of technology we can often display mean or hurtful comments to others without knowing their background of their life and what we've been through and often want to change or show others of how we want to live over the internet and are discriminated or bullied because of social media and it can also affect someones education and confidence inside of schools that are willing to help students become successful and by becoming a victim to social media more and more students in school are less focused like how D.Watkins gives his point of view of students he teaches get lost in discussion over social media"20 to 30% of them get lost midway through our discussions" which is bad for people who come from bad neighborhoods and letting it control us which personally makes me feel upset of how one of his students almost lost their life to be on social media while driving.

I believe that neighborhood violence has the greatest negative impact on African-American community in Baltimore. I think the neighborhood violence has the biggest impact on Baltimore community because, its true the police and the people who lives in the Baltimore community is creating the violence, polices is going around killing but at the same time there is the people in the community that's killing so you cant really blame the polices because it the people who live in Baltimore to.

D. Watkins describes his issue perfectly in his vignette, "Gimme your license and registration! i'm ....slowly..going..into...my..glove box..to..grab..them moving fast or showing too much emotion is the quickest way to turn a traffic stop routine into a tragedy", and D. Watkins also states, " if an officer even almost thinks you're reaching for a gun, they'll pump you with a hundred-plus shots like Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell--two working guys like me, who were profiled and then executed just because". Even if the police stop killing that doesn't mean that the people in Baltimore community is going to stop.

I believe that our neighborhood violence has the greatest negative impact on black people lives. There are many African-American males dying from left to right. Even they will get shot by another black male, or killed by the polices. Nobody is safe in Baltimore. No matter what you do, maybe you are going to the store to buy something, you will end up getting shot even at the wrong place or wrong time. D.Watkins believed that almost all cops in Baltimore are bad, they are no more good cops. Cops doesn't care what you do, they will eventually killed you and get away. Also D.Watkins believed not only in Baltimore cops get away with murder, many other cops around the world will also get away with murder. In the vignette it said,"Now our neighborhoods are full of racist cops who just harass, plunder and kill." & He also said "...the reason why African Americans do not call the police for anything---ever." D. Watkins is saying now days, we don't have no cops who can look up to us by coming to our school and show us love also respect. Now the cops are becoming the bad criminal and things turn to a different solutions. Some African American doesn't like calling the cops no more because they will make you their target.

"Lemon heads, now and laters, flamin hot cheetos, BBQ sunflower seeds, boston baked beans, penny candies of every flavor, butterscotch cookies, butterscotch krimpets, twinkies , twix, takis, and M&M; thats the menu my friends and i shared every morning on the way to elementary, middle, and high school-- and the reason we all have meth-mouth-looking teeth with chopped up incisors and rotton molars".(95) I agree with D. watkins opinion about some people killing there self and the polices not killing them... i think some people should watch what they are eating. Also he is saying that a lot of people should read what they about to eat and see how much fat thats in the food that u eating.

I believe that technology and social medias drowns our society today simply because technology is just a source that just makes things easier. I feel as an African American this makes me and the majority of people in my society or community very lazy. And also I believe that social media is a pull down on many Americans success.
In The Beast Side by D.Watkins, he states "...addiction to social media is toxic, robbing them of real life experiences, making them robots."
Also he talks to a young adult about the bring downs on success also.
For instance text says "You'll be a fool if you fail because of IG ..." These two quotes show how our society is impacted by technology ,and social media

The impact of unhealthy food is decreasing the population of black people. I say this because I for one am a black male who eats out. And I have notice the difference between a family who actually sits together and eats wholesome meals. But for that to happen you would have to be in a white neighborhood. In a black neighborhood wholesome stores to buy food to cook a wholesome meal is limited. And even if we had it we don't produce enough money in the hood to shop at those stores and cook wholesome meals. What we do instead is go to a nearby McDonalds and order 30 dollars worth of food. Then the food isn't actually real so we don't eat healthy. And I quote ''And then there's soul food, microwavable poison or mickey d's.'' The is quote supports my response as to how black unhealthy food choices are limited to choices that hurt's us in the long run.

I believe that unhealthy food is a leading cause of obesity and disease that can cause early death in developing neighborhoods in america. This problem effects more than just Baltimore. There are many other places that experience the same problem that are also poor and riddled with violence as Baltimore is.

D. Watkins says that unhealthy eating "seems to be unshakable in the black community and becomes evident when considering that the risk of diabetes is 77 percent higher among African Americans than non-Hispanic white Americans." (98) I see this as an unfortunate truth among the community. There is very little opportunity for people in lower income neighborhoods to purchase healthy foods such as produce. Even for those fortunate enough to be able to obtain healthy foods, they may not be able to afford or prepare them properly. When people have an easier decision between buying ready- made food that costs less compared to expensive produce that takes time to prepare, people are more likely to choose what is more easy. Unhealthy eating can effect many different people in different ways and can lead to harmful diseases that bring premature death.
What is the point of focusing on other things that are killing people when they are making a conscious decision to do the deed themselves.

D.Watkins is correct technology, I say this because technology is anything man made to make peoples lives easier, computers and smart phones are things that were made to make lie easier but people made things for entertainment that we use excessively. I also believe so many people use it because people want to feel like those that are famous or they want to fit in with there associates. I believe social media is a big distraction and causes us to not do things that are important. In the text it says "He went to tell me that he IGs or "chases the Gram" before he goes to sleep, when he wakes up and, when he drives." The text also says "Why do 20 to 30 percent of them get lost midway through our discussions? ... They scroll." These quotes prove that Technology and Social media has the greatest impact on African Americans
