The new standards set the bar up for educators much higher by stressing the importance of proper technology utilization in the classroom. Honestly, I was not surprised, rather pleased to notice a switch from employing technology for fun to engaging students in more effective and productive ways in order to raise the global citizens, deepen their knowledge, ignite curiosity and improve analytical skills. As educators, we are called to be vigilant when selecting digital resources in order to maximize and promote active learning; continue to collect and analyze data to improve our teaching; provide ample opportunities for students to demonstrate their competency, etc.

Anna Breland

As a librarian, it is not a surprise to see how closely ISTE standards align to AASL standards, all the way down to the tiers for educators, students, and the actual program. I personally think it is important to remember that as educators, we are also learners. Setting our own professional goals to remain current and effective with our use of technology is the very first standard. By leading the way for our students, we are models for their responsible, productive use of technology, both in and out of the classroom.
I am also impressed with how the standards address using technology for students to express their competency in a variety of ways. This is so important for students as they navigate their own learning. At the elementary level, we do a lot of direct instruction on how to use different applications. As they get more experience or develop that creativity and courage to try new things, it is wonderful to see how they can use what they know to create and show their own understanding. Overall, I think these standards are great guides as we slowly turn the tide towards student-centered learning in all disciplines.

Technology tools change so rapidly, but the ISTE standards are written in a way to be applicable to all tools even those that haven’t been created yet. I like the focus on digital citizenship. We focus on these skills explicitly, then through the year as they apply to the tools we are using.

The implications of the standards for educators is that technology tools should be chosen and used not just for the sake of using the new tool, but by using the Understanding by Design model of planning. A technology tool is chosen with the end goal of what we want students to be able to apply in mind. A good tool would allow students to communicate their understanding in different ways.

The standards acknowledge that educators are on a continuum in their comfort/knowledge of technology tools. Teachers tend to be life-long learners but unfortunately some hit a brain block when it comes to technology, and their discomfort stops them from seeking out technology tools. The standards say that educators should set professional learning goals and grow through Global Learning Networks, not school based learning. That is what those who are enthusiastic about integrating technology do. We have been struggling to figure out how to encourage those who may not be as comfortable with technology to come to voluntary PD or seek out help to help them along that continuum.

It was encouraging to see how the ISTE Standards are compatible with all levels of students and with various technologies. As a teacher whose main classes are 10th-12th graders, but with one 7th grade class, it is nice to have one set of standards to reference for all students regardless of age or capabilities. The ISTE Standards provide a solid reference as I am planning a 5-day introduction to my program for my 7th graders, or a semester-long class for my second year students.

I enjoyed how the standards encourage educators to participate in both local and global networks. It is often easy to use technologies that include the class as a whole but do not expand outside of the classroom. In order to truly prepare students to become global citizens, especially in a rural area, it is important to connect them with outside resources and technology is a great way to do that. As a newer teacher, I have often just used the technologies that teachers around me use but the standards encourage me to look further into what teachers worldwide have had success with.

It was also nice to read standards that encourage technology to be used to foster socially responsible activities and to instill a sense of community within our students. Often, educators resort to technology to increase engagement in the classroom and to make learning more fun, but it is important to ensure that technology is more substantial than simply entertaining. Soft skills development is essential for our students and using technology in this way can help mold students into strong citizens.

My favorite aspect of the standards is that it focuses on student-centered learning, which addresses the above engagement concern. As students become the ones directing their learning, they will automatically become more engaged and be able to tailor their learning to their own interests and abilities. The standards also give guidance on using technology to help students reflect on their learning and this is imperative in a true student-centered classroom.

I look forward to learning more and implementing these standards in my classroom!

Katharine Campbell

I am pleased with what I see in the ISTE standards. I have always been a proponent of digital learning because it just makes more sense in today's world. We are preparing our students for jobs that haven't even been created yet. Infusing these standards effectively will give our students the knowledge and skills they need to compete for the best jobs out there.

The implications for teachers are that we need to use these standards to protect our students from issues that come up because of such a global use of technology today. Improper social use can lead to problems for our students. Proper empathetic use can lead to building a stronger community among our students. Our students need to know how to safely use the internet so they don't get into legal trouble. We need to model the correct way to use the internet to promote positive behavior. We need to model how to look for safe sites as well as how to respond to others on line. We need to model how to site our sources so those who created the sources get the credit they deserve.

Using technology also helps teachers become aware of skills students are having difficulty with as well as skills that have already been mastered. We can give immediate feedback through programs like Socrative, Flocabulary, and Google Classroom so students know where they stand as soon as they finish assignments. Students are more engaged when they can interact with their peers and well as with their teachers. Students tend to be more responsible when they can play an active role in their education.

Technology allows for the differentiation of instruction at all levels. The students can use all different avenues of learning through google draw, google slides, collaboration through google orcreate videos through vimeo or youtube . Students can also learn about other countries through Google Earth. Technology offers all of these avenues to better our instructional models. Programs such as Read Works provides the same material at different lexile levels for the students. The ability to listen to material is also an important component of technology.

Setting professional learning goals is very important. If we are going to hold our students to higher standards, should we not also hold ourselves to higher standards? Setting goals is one way to accomplish this. We must also model good online citizenship for our students. Many of our students do not know what is appropriate online and what should not be accessed. We want to promote their curiosity with online tools but we must not assume that they understand what is socially responsible behavior. It falls on the teacher to make sure she/he is monitoring the students’ computer or technology use to ensure they are using it properly. The 5th standard is one of the reasons I signed up to take this course. I am looking for ways to personalize the learning experiences of my students through the use of online learning tools. The analyst piece is also interesting to me. I am so ready to begin offering alternative ways for students to demonstrate learning. They thrive so much better when they can express their learning in a way that is meaningful to them and not just sit down with a paper and pencil assessment at the end of a unit. I offer different off-line ways to show what they have learned but I would love to incorporate more technology into the classroom, especially since students are so technology driven now a days. One very nice piece of the current program I am using to teach reading intervention is the ability it provides for me to gather data on the students and quickly communicate with other teachers and parents about the progress their student is making. I always dreaded data but now I actually look forward to it.
Tracy Kronewitter

One aspect that I took away from the ISTE standards is that it encourages educators to create experiences that are positive and exhibit empathetic behavior. As a middle school educator, empathy is a social skill that I have observed my students struggling with on a daily basis both digitally and physically. Unfortunately, we even see many adults struggling with this as well. Students view technology as an outlet to express their opinions with no regards to other individuals’ feelings. They feel they are anonymous because they are behind a screen. Educating our students about being socially responsible is imperative in order for our students to be productive citizens.

In addition, I loved the idea of using technology as a way to adapt and personalize learning experiences. I think technology is a wonderful tool to help with differentiation. It encourages both intervention and enrichment activities. This is essential given that we have very little time and limited resources. Technology allows educators to deliver instruction that meets the needs of students with varied learning styles to help bridge any gaps.

The implication for educators is how to use technology purposefully and not as a way to entertain their students. I have found that middle school students love to use technology. Technology is engaging and promotes collaboration, but there is a fine line between using technology as entertainment versus using technology to allow students to demonstrate their competency. Technology should be used to help students communicate, develop mastery, and become productive citizens of the 21st century. We are living in a digital world and technology in the classroom must be used to foster this life skill.

I do love that the standard is being held for all teachers and not just those who work directly with teaching technology coursework to students. I love the standard that encourages teachers to steadily continue learning as I believe most teachers do. I believe the most vital standards are citizenship and analyst. Teaching and learning citizenship is crucial in our times of communicating and producing work online. Taking ownership of ones hard work as well as respecting others. Teaching this to students is most important to me. Lastly, I always include analyzing any kind of assessment as a vital part of the learning process. Holding teachers accountable of reflecting upon ones teaching.

“The ISTE Standards for Students are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process.” (Education, 2019) This statement embodies the first of what I think are the three main implications of the standards. The end result of implementation of the ISTE standards is student growth. Our job as educators is to implement technology(ies) in our classrooms in ways that foster student learning, improve teacher knowledge and implementation of technology and, in the end, leave our students with the tools necessary to be capable, functioning, participating members of our technological world.

I love that the ISTE Standards are applicable for all grade levels. I think it is very easy to write off the use technology as a ‘lesser than’ pedagogical skill. However, regardless of grade level there is some aspect of the ISTE Standards that each teacher can incorporate. My 5 year olds can still learn how to safely navigate technology, participate in mastery learning activities, practice fine motor skills necessary for future skill development, and learn basic netiquette. All of these are addressed in the ISTE Standards.

Lastly, we have to keep in mind the definition of the term ISTE Standards. According to Chris Zook, “ISTE Standards are ultra-high technology education benchmarks for both learners and teachers.” (Zook, 2017) All teachers regardless of grade, subject or demographic taught should be holding themselves and their students at an ultra-high standard. We need to remember that the ISTE Standards are not written for the exclusivity of our Media, Computer or Tech Teachers. All teachers in 2019 should be actively teaching technology in their classroom and empowering our students to reach our ultra-high goals.

<var>M. B.

As a media specialist/teacher librarian I have followed two mantras; you must use the right tool for the job, technology is a tool.  Excellent teaching is excellent teaching. If you take the word “technology” out of the ISTE Technology Standards you are left with the behaviors we want our students to exhibit now and later in life;

1. Empowered learner

2. Digital citizen

3. Knowledge constructor

4. Innovative designer

5. Computational thinker

6. Creative communicator

7. Global collaborator

21st century skills aspire to prepare students for a world in which future careers have yet to be imagined. In reflecting upon my mantra, “using the right tool for the job”, students must be able to identify the right tool be it digital or not. They must be confident, flexible and adaptive to the task they are performing. This will only happen if students experience this in the classroom, be it digital or not. I believe the process of gaining knowledge and skills all goes back to pedagogy.

Technology is a tool. Unfortunately in today's world digital technology has become more of a social instrument, entertainment. Being able to socialize using technology has benefits. However, students must develop an awareness of social norms and the appropriate syntax of communicating digitaly.   The Rotary Club uses a four way test for its guiding principles;

"Of the things we think, say or do-

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

I feel these principles apply to daily life, particularly the social aspects of digital social technology. Students forget that technology is a tool and that you must use the right tool for the job.

I like how the ISTE standards are written in comparison to the Maryland Technology Standards. The ISTE standards are written more broadly which allows them to be intergraded across grade levels and content areas. The ISTE standards use verbs such as create, establish, and design. The focus of these standards are not so much on learning a particular technology. Instead they want students and educators to select technology tools that will assist in performing a task or big idea. I thought the ISTE standards also tied in nicely with the Engineering by Design process and the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) which are two initiatives currently being used in education. UDL and the Engineering by Design process encourages students to become in control of their own learning through choice, progress monitoring, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. ISTE standards 1,3,5,7 also promote these same skills using technology.

I found it interesting that the ISTE standards use the titles of Learner, Citizen, Designer, and Analysts. These are four rolls we want our students to preform not only during school but also long after graduation so they can be successful in this ever changing world. Just like the saying, “You can give someone a fish and they will eat for a day but if you teach someone to fish they eat for a lifetime.” We need to teach our students how to “fish” in life by providing them with a tool kit they can use to be life- long learners, good citizens in the real world and digital, designers and creators through problem solving and critical thinking, and able to analyze information so they can think for themselves.

Implications for Educators:

The ISTE standards are written in a manner that promotes teacher agency in the design of learning activities. It facilities the development of technology skills across content areas through integration instead of using technology separately. Technology is a tool that is used to enhance and improve pedagogy, content, and assessment seamlessly which is how TPACK encourages technology instruction to be viewed. They don’t want teachers to see technology as another item on their “to-do list”. Technology should be viewed as a way to make teaching and learning more engaging and easier for both the instructor and student. Unfortunately, many educators view technology negatively. Some educators’ own digital literacy is not as strong which causes them to be apprehensive about using it in their instruction. Also time and equipment issues are a few of the other reasons teachers tend not to want to use technology in their instruction.
R.Laird

The ITSE Standards are necessary for student learning and success. I like how these standards can reach across all curriculum, and can be used in any grade level. These standards clearly break down the levels that students should be learning.

The standards are sure to make it known that technology should be used as a tool, and not just because "we need to" or "we have it." Standard one states that as the learner, technology should be used, "not random, intentional and guided, reflective and recursive." This is so true. Technology can be a powerful tool in the classroom when used strategically with lesson plans.

Whether some like it or not, we live in a technology driven world, and instead of fighting it, we should integrate it successfully into our classrooms. We have the ability to teach students how to effectively use technology in their own lives, so why not use our platform to do so? In doing this, we are promoting healthy technological choices, and showing students new advanced practices that can only help them in the future.

While some are often uneasy about the use of technology and using these standards in the classroom, I believe that by using them in a productive manner will only make our students stronger.

After viewing the new ISTE standards I can see that they are necessary for our ever changing classrooms. Technology is being incorporated more and more in not only the educational environment, but also in our careers and every day life. The only surprise to me is that these standards are "new." Unfortunately not all citizens use technology appropriately. An implication could be wrongful use of social media in the classroom. Standard 3 states "Create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community." Students tend to want to use social media in a negative way, to bully other students and start unnecessary drama. Having the standards that encourage staff to have positive and socially responsible experiences will hopefully improve some of the negative behavior that we see.

While the standards seem pretty common sense to me and probably to most teachers, the standards are not the general practice of this generation that we are teaching. It is imperative that we guide our students to and understanding of good practices when using technology, not just for their safety, but also for the good of society.
We constantly see in the news where people are posting someone committing illegal acts. Rape, murder, terrorism and even contaminating food at a supermarket by licking the content have all been live streamed or posted on social media within the last few months. We also see people creating their own brands, product lines and showing their talents trying to become rich and famous. The internet can be used for trying to do almost anything you can think of, which makes it more important for us as teachers to teach guidelines and parameters to which future and current users will abide by. Can we solve every issue - no, but we can start with our classroom and our school and make a difference in our community so as to limit the negative consequences of using the internet incorrectly.

The New ISTE Standards provide a guideline enabling an educator to enhance their own specific professional learning goals, and increase the knowledge base of students by using technology as another avenue for learning in the digital age. Surprising about the standards: depending on the age group of learners that are in your classroom, all students will benefit greatly using the standards listed. Educators should design new approaches to reach the students with exciting and challenging opportunities. Unfortunately, not all teachers embrace using technology in the classroom. Most educators look at technology with fear of not knowing how to implement ideas using this format.

By branching out and exploring new technology to integrate in the classroom will establish creativity for both student and educator. Most teachers, I feel visualize this as “one more thing to do”. Being able to master every task and completing is a challenge.

I also believe that it is our responsibility to work with students to ensure that they are using technology safely and following ethical guidelines. I have often heard students describing the information that they post online, and realize that they have no idea about their own privacy rights, nor the rights of others.

When reading through the Designer standard I couldn't agree more.
I am always looking for activities that are relevant to my students.
When something is not relevant to students it isn't important or interesting, and they are much less likely to remember it. When activities are relevant to students, and I see them really understanding an idea or concept, it's not only enjoyable for the students, but for the teacher as well!

I think that the Analyst standard is very important. Students really need alternative ways to demonstrate their knowledge. I see that constantly in the classroom and also as the parent of a child that struggles with traditional test taking.

I was not familiar with these standards prior to reading through them, and realize that I need to learn more about them in order to make sure that I am following them in my classroom!
Michelle Nordstrom

The ISTE Standards did not surprise me. They are a well-thought out set of guidelines to implementing technology into education. I like that they seem timeless. I believe these standards could easily move into many future generations and still be applicable. Students will use technology to make effective connections or networking with others. This connection will help our students to blossom by reaching out beyond our small community.

I also like how each standard builds upon each other to create a cohesive bond. Simply put, they just make good sense. In today's digital world, it is so important for us to teach our students how not to just use technology, but to use it effectively. From this perspective, teachers set up the framework for students to explore, learn, and also think creatively. From the special education standpoint, I like that students' have access to accommodations to help bridge academic or learning gaps through the use of technology. This is also true for the variety of assessments which can be used to evaluate where each student is in the learning process.

I like the titles and roles of the standards. They don't apply just to students but also to ourselves and shows more of a cycle. This can be pointed out to students how they won't always just be a learner, based on their own knowledge and experiences they can also be a leader, etc. The Citizen one can be really challenging and I like that it comes before Collaborator. Not just the students but adults can become "numb" and don't realize just how much weight their words and online actions hold and can affect others. That empathy has become lost and is needed not just in face to face collaboration activities, but when we want them to collaborate in online activities and projects. I have actually not thought about it this way before, so it's something to reflect on and how I can teach it or incorporate it into digital activities. It's something new to think about for all educators. We get so focused on building classroom community that it won't always translate to online activities because it is almost like a different mindset. I feel like I use Standard 5 the most with Google Classroom and showing students how to create different types of projects and activities. As educators though, it has also become something to rely on with accommodations and intervention. It shouldn't be the sole focus and used just for that. It can then become a meaningless tool. Standard 7 the Analyst can help students build a growth mindset. That has become a big push and it's hard for older students to understand what it really means. What they can really focus on is goal setting, how to achieve that goal, how they are doing on the way to their goal. Technology can be a better way for students to track progress. Often paper data and charts can be handy, cute and colorful, but then they get easily get lost. Even student created ones. This way they can still create and design their own charts and graphs and take more control and ownership of their learning. It's something that can also be easily shared with other teachers and parents.

As I was reading through the standards for educators I was enlightened to see that there is a standard which specifically speaks to establishing characteristics of being socially responsible online. This is essential because it allows for students to see that their behaviors affect others on and offline. Students need to understand the importance of community in general, which is sometimes forgotten due to living in a world engulfed with virtual relationships rather than physical ones. Within the same standard, the establishment of a learning culture that promotes curiosity and critical examination of online resources while fostering digital literacy and media fluency is stated. This is stood out to me because knowing that this specifically is a standard allows for educator to establish an objective which requires students to engage in the examination of online resources in order to determine fact/ fiction which will allow for academic growth. More time than none, our students perish for lack of knowledge which derives from a lack of understanding, stemming from a lack of exposure. Promoting inquisitive behaviors in order to examine online resources will expose students to material in all contents.

The implications for educators are that we are responsible for providing our students with the tools to be deemed socially responsible members of a frequently changing world. Students are to be taught what it means to become a productive member of the society in which they live, this includes their online communities as well.

The thing that I liked and was surprised about the ISTE standards are the details and explanations that go along with each standard. The wording made them easy to understand. Being in a kindergarten classroom I find it challenging to dig deeper into technology beyond game based learning. The standards give me an idea of what to think about when planning technological lessons in the classroom. Something that is good for an educator would be the analyst piece. Data based instruction is not a new idea but by using the analyst piece of the standards you are creating real life learning and connections that students will use again and again. Analyzing information online allows many collaborators to see and use the results. This is a great skill to teach students, and to use the data, to help teach them and also use it a communication tool. My favorite part that I took away from the slide is from the designer standard that says "technology is a tool to help, not the only goal". It is important to remember to use technology as an enhancement not always as the focus.

The ISTE Standards for Educators are written in a way that breaks down how to implement technology into each role an educator plays throughout the school year. These roles are not only those that we must take on as educators but also model for our students who will one day need to take on these roles as well.

Educators are lifelong learners (Standard 1), so we should always stay informed on current research regarding education. The ISTE standards clarify that educators should engage in constant reflection of the effectiveness of the technology they use in their own classroom, as well as stay connected to research on how other have used certain technology and how that has/has not helped student learning.

Educators must also display the qualities of a proper citizen (Standard 3), and model and reinforce those qualities for their students. While implementing technology in the classroom, it is important to teach students how to use that technology properly (and legally) as well as teach them how interact appropriately while using online programs, especially those that may collect and share personal data. Considering the how much we use social media already, it is imperative we teach this early on to prepare students for a future of social media we cannot even predict right now.

As we analyze content standards and learning goals, educators must design (Standard 5) lessons to meet those goals. The ISTE standard explain how to properly implement technology into those lessons. While planning lessons, educators should think about the individual needs of their students and ask themselves how this technology could cater to those needs or even promote deep, active learning. We do this already when thinking of accommodations - technology can be used a tool to help make those accommodations easier and maybe even more fun for the students that need them.

Educators must also analyze (Standard 7) progress constantly. They can use technology to collect, organize, and store data for students to use for self reflection as well as to use for assessing student performance. Educators can also use technology as a communication tool to discuss student progress with parents and another teachers.

While I have not had many years of experience in teaching, it is necessary to believe and understand that technology will continue to grow and change as the technology advances.
I believe that as educators, we should implement these changes in the classroom no matter the content area. Students are already (and sometimes more accustomed) to the changes in technology than we are as educators, so it is necessary that we grow in the classroom as technology advances.
One standard that really stuck with me was Standard 3 - Citizen both 3a and 3b. This standard encourages positive learning experiences and show respect and positivity in the classroom among all level learners. Stand 3a specifically refers to creating a classroom community of learners, and I can say from my experience teaching 8th grade science, this is crucial to creating a safe and effective learning environment. We all know that students in our county come from all different types of backgrounds and home situations - its very diverse community is why we need to teach empathy, and encourage students to do so. Not only is middle school hard, the age of middle schoolers is a tough age, and sometimes they don't always know how to positively express themselves. Teaching empathy can help bridge the diverse communities and create a classroom community that promotes healthy learning, debates and positive learning experiences.

After reading the ISTE standards, the implications for teachers are multi-fold. A summary of these responsibilities to me, include:

              1. Teaching students to use internet tools and resources safely and respectfully.

              2. Protect student data and information by practicing confidentiality guidelines.

              3. Integrate technology in meaningful and creative ways that engage and expand learning.

              4. Use technology to assess students that also allows them opportunities to evaluate their own learning.

While addressing each of these areas, it is also our duty to be sure students begin observing technology as a tool. In order to accomplish this, it is important for educators to present technology in meaningful ways that will help students be successful as they move into future careers, some of which have not been imagined. The use of technology is not enough, to me, the inclusion of key phrases in the standards such as “authentic learning, personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning , and crafted with specific outcomes in mind,” illustrate how purposeful integration of technology in the classroom needs to be in order to be impactful. It is also essential that students learn how this tool can be used for good, but also bad practices. As technology evolves, so does social media and the implications for using it in ways that could have a negative impact now or in their future. As this evolution occurs it is important our integration does as well to meet the safety and practical needs of our students to continue to prepare them for the real world experiences socially and professionally that await them.

Learning in our schools must reflect skills and practices that exist not only in our community but in a global society. The ISTE Standards provide a platform that allows teachers and students to set learning goals that integrate technology and skills that extend into the real world. As most people have said, I have seen technology integration used for entertainment, engagement or for the sake of using a new tool. But then the excitement eventually wears away and what valuable learning experiences have we given our students. Overall the way that the standards are written they do provide scaffolding, skills, goals and a platform to guide teachers, staff, students and community members to be part of an ongoing global learning environment.

After reading through the standards, I kept coming back to Standard 3a: "create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community." I know so many teachers are trying to build socially responsible students in the physical world, and how we are trying to also expand that to the digital world. We are in a time where people feel it's safe to say anything when they are behind a screen. Teaching our children that what they post on the internet can have long ramifications is such an important life lesson. Aside from just watching what they put online, also guiding them to be empathetic towards others and build a positive culture and community online with people they know, and even people they don't. Our job as teachers has really taken on a character education role and the ISTE standards seem to also recognize that.
I was surprised and glad to read that the standards also encourage teachers to become familiar with new technology and research. A lot of teachers get stuck in a rut with technology platforms they are comfortable with using and do not spread out much past that. And I get it, technology can seem daunting. When you are lesson planning, grading parents, conferencing with parents, etc, there isn't always a lot of free time to be trying out the latest and greatest. Plus, many teachers have those Type A personalities and trying out something new with their students that might fail or not go as planned sounds very scary them. As a facilitator I try to bring new things to our team meetings and give teachers time to "play around" with it so it seems "less scary" but I don't always have as much time to do that as I'd like. We need to set up a culture that lets teachers know it is ok if you try something new and bombs. We want our students to be risk takers but really first we need our teachers to be. This is the biggest implication I see for teachers.

ISTE provides educators with clear and concise guidelines for how to address and utilize instructional technology within classrooms. In layman’s terms, not only does ISTE provide teachers with the means to empower students’ learning via self-ownership, but it also promotes teachers’ knowledge because they become active learners as well. Additionally, another benefit ISTE standards offer educators are their ability to be both cross-curricular and applicable to all grade levels. As such, they govern the usage and implementations of current and future technologies. While all of the standards are key components of today’s digital learning, I believe Standards 1 (Learner), 2 (Leader), 5 (Designer), and 6 (Facilitator) are most important for teachers to remain cognizant of. First, Standard 1 recognizes the importance of teachers being learners themselves and; thus, outlines how they can learner from others with the instructional technology field. Second, Standard 2 promotes the vision of teachers being leaders by means of facilitating their knowledge and experience in a multitude of new, innovative technological practices. Third, Standard 5 substantiates the need for educators to craft and create instruction by through various modes of instructional technologies that address multiple learning styles. Fourth, Standard 6 is, quite possibly, the most essential standard for teachers to remain aware. It spells out the importance of facilitating the knowledge of others through instructional technologies. Lastly, in today’s educational arenas, it is imperative for teachers to adopt and adapt ISTE standards into their curriculums because they provide a pathway for advancing the learning of our 21st century students for careers that have not being created yet.

My takeaway after reading about the ISTE standards is that I like how they aim for teachers to take an active and creative role in the education process to help students learn more effectively. It is important for students of all ages to be actively and puprosefully using technology daily in the classroom. The standards had me think deeper about how important it is for students to not only utilize technonlogy, but to utilize it through peer collaboration and to drive their own learning. As teachers we should be using technonloy to lead a framework for learning by using technology.

The implications for teachers is that we need to be constantly aware and ready to learn new technologies as they become available in order to embed them in our lessons. We live in a technology driven world and exposing students to the technology as they enter into the school systems will only give them a jump on the life skills they will need. As teacher we need to embrace technology and use it as effectively and productively in our lessons, in order to prepare students for a successul future.

The implications of the ISTE Standards are that we must rethink traditional approaches to education in order to be digitally proactive in preparing the responsible digital citizen of tomorrow. What surprises me is the widely held belief that technology is a “new thing” that we have to “integrate” into our classrooms. I believe it is a process that we should always be using and adapting in education and life.

When reflecting on “technology” I am reminded of the way I have introduced Science to my students for the past 34 years. At the beginning of each school year I tell my students that we have to allow for changes in technology to change the way we view things. The earliest human assumption of the shape of the planet, using the technology available at the time, the naked eye, was that the earth was flat. With the advent of sailing technology in the 1400’s, we modified our view of the earth as round. When man used new technology to explore space the shape of the earth was determined to be ovoid. Technology is a process that creates new and better ways of doing things.

In that same class discussion, my students and I discuss the importance of recording their scientific findings (lab reports) as a means for others to “pick up where they left off.” If everyone began at square one, we would not get very far.

Technology is a way to accelerate growth.

The third point in that lecture (and yes, lectures are still needed) is that Science (technology) has created a smaller world in that scientists in different countries can collaborate together in real time.

Technology facilitates collaboration.

In short, technology is the process by which work is done.

Man has always used the technology available to him to improve his life. In the past we have been allowed to assimilate technologies into our lives slowly. This is not the case with the acceleration of today’s digital technology which is much more than a new invention. It has become a global language with its own literacy. Technology is integrated in everything we do and will be used in every job our students encounter. Students are already digitally immersed in their daily lives. Education using technology and digital tools is essential. In addition to being the “language” our students use, it’s a more efficient way to facilitate: active engagement and participation, collaboration, real world application, and self-directed and individualized learning. It is a new and better way to do things, academically. With this scope, the ISTE standards are a framework to guide the digital citizen of the future.

This is not the first time that I have explored the ISTE Standards for Educators. I love these standards because of how they are broken down and detailed. To be concise, they just make sense! With the way education is moving and evolving, these standards can be applied in any and all classroom settings and content areas. While some applications may be a little bit more obvious than others, it is important to note that at this point in education, technology can and should be utilized effectively and efficiently in all classes. Sometimes I see teachers struggling to understand what it means to truly utilize technology in their content areas that enhances the learning experience. All too often, teachers get so focused on using the technology available that they are simply using it for the sake of using it. This is a huge downfall of having technology available. These standards can truly help teachers and school staff members to incorporate technologies that enhance the learning process!

As teachers I think that we don't take enough credit for what we are already doing. When looking at the ISTE standards they can be overwhelming and seem like just "one more thing," but in actuality I am sure most of us are doing this in our classrooms everyday. Although most of us are doing this on a daily basis, these standards encourage us to make each use of technology authentic. There have been times when I add technology to a lesson, but did it really enhance my lesson. These standards keep the learners and teachers focused on explicit goals that empower them. -Corey Ward

These standards seem good but I really enjoyed Standard 7- Anlayst. Using technology is great for engaging learners with various learning styles. I love the idea of providing different ways to assess learning, not just paper tests, and show what they've learned in creative ways and reflect on their own thinking without the pressure of simply having to get a correct answer. Learning becomes more about the process. Assessing learners formatively and summatively using technology, again, provides an an engaging way for students to demonstrate their learning and it can be a quick and effective way to provide feedback to the learners and even parents. There are even ways to quickly provide specific feedback for how to make improvements, which could help learners take more ownership of their learning.
S. Handy

The ISTE Standards are actually forward moving toward a direction of transparency. The expectations for Learners, Leaders, Facilitator, etc. are all on the same document, whereas we have standards for the different content area according to grade level. Expectations are outlined via concepts for students to learn and how in depth the teacher should teach. However, leader standards are on a separate document. What this says to me is that we are a community of learners committed to learning and growing together. The standards also lay out best practices for us to prepare our students for a more digitally evolving world. It is no longer acceptable for educators to simply state they are uncomfortable with using technology and not even put forth the effort to try.

Liz Berry

The ISTE standards helps guide educators to the best use of technology. It addresses our professional learning goals that we continue to learn from and with other educators. As a kindergarten teacher 3- citizen really stood out to me. That they can contribute and participate in the digital world. They can use guidance in creating the social norms and purpose to their learning in the digital world. To also help model safe use of personal data and digital identity . With 5- Designer the students can use technology for their personal learning experiences and have ownership of their own goals. Including authentic learning activities with real life/world problems. That they can see how these connect to a career or workforce related job. 7- Analyst using data to drive instruction with alternate ways like an e portfolio system. Also, using assessment data to communicate with students, parents and education stakeholders. Looking at these has me thinking of the best ways to utilize them with my kindergarten students.

Recently, I read a blog post from The Techie Teacher and it got me thinking about how to teach responsible use of technology from a very young age. Occasionally, I'm guilty of letting my 2-year-old play on my phone without monitoring her every second to make sure she stays in the Peek-A-Boo Barn app and to show her how to handle mommy's phone (please don't judge ;-). I now have a visual cue - cracked screen - to remind me to teach her how to be more careful. I'd be willing to bet some of our students are coming from a background where they were handed a device, expected to stay occupied, and never had lessons in responsible use. If a user doesn't have respect for the device, will he/she have respect for what the device gives them the power to do? Just as we can't expect the students to know how to use (treat) a device, we also can't expect them to come to us knowing that their online actions can greatly affect others and have an impact on themselves in the future. Standard 3 really stuck with me!

I was pleasantly surprised to see the word "intervention" along with enrichment in Standard 5. I feel that, in the past, the use of technology was considered a tool for the students who excel at school instead of the ones who struggle. I think educators need to consider incorporating technology and teaching responsible ways to use these tools to all students.

I look at those standards as taking technology integration to the next level. We were all guilty of using technology to "flare up" our lessons- just add some "bells and whistles." But these standards are designed to truly use technology to meet learners where they are and help them access learning. Instead of "one size fits all," we are challenged with differentiate and personalize the learning to meet the varying needs of our students. With the steady increase of technology integration, it becomes more than ever important to teach our students how to be responsible and respectful citizens. Spiderman's uncle said, "With great power comes great responsibility." Our students have great power with the technological tools in their hands. We need to ensure they are showing great responsibility.....

The ISTE standards are a great foundation for educators in this age of technology. These standards allow for teachers to be the facilitators of technology, instead of taking a passive role and giving students websites they are "allowed" to be on. These standards open the door for endless possibilities of ways that teachers can implement technology into their classrooms every day. Not only does this help a teacher's planning in the long run, going paperless has many benefits in itself. I was amazed at just how many possibilities teachers can have when following these technology standards. It is certainly eye opening.
