What is it?
A wildfire, also known as a wild land fire, forest fire, vegetation fire, grass fire, peat fire, bushfire, or hill fire is an uncontrolled fire which can also consume houses or agriculture resources. Wildfires often begin unnoticed, but they spread quickly igniting bushes, trees and homes.
Where do they most occur?
They most occur in wild land areas and are common in the forested areas of the US and Canada. They are also susceptible in many places around the world, including much of the vegetated areas of Australia as well as in the Western Cape of South Africa.
Wildfires are also common in grasslands and scrublands.

What causes a wildfire?
Common causes of wildfires include lightning, human carelessness, arson, volcano eruption, and pyroclastic cloud from active volcano. Heat waves, droughts, and cyclical climate changes can also have dramatic effect on the risk of wildfires. Although, more than four out of every five wildfires are caused by people.

What to do:

Before
- Create defensible space to seperate your home from flammable vegetation and materials (minimum 30 ft).
- Keep all trees and shrub limbs trimmed so they do not come into contact with electrical wires.
- Keep roof surfaces clear if pine needles, leaves and debris and all times.

During
- Turn on TV or radio to get the latest emergency information.
- If you have a ladder, prop it against the house so you and firefighters have access to roof.
- Turn off air conditioning/air circulation systems.
- If hoses and adequate water are available set then up. Fill buckets with water.
- Turn a light on in each room for visibility in case of smoke.
- Open or take down flammable drapes and curtains.
- Secure your pets if possible.
- Close all Venetian blinds and non-flammable drapes and curtains.
- Move upholsetered furniture away from windows and sliding glass doors.
- Be ready to evacuate all family members and pets when requester to do so.
- Detach electrical garage doors. Back in your car and leave the keys in the ignition.

After
- Check with fire officials before attempting to return to your home.
- Use caution when re-entering a burned area - flare ups can occur.
- Check grounds for hot spots, smoldering stumps and vegetation. Use your buckets of water.
- Check the roof and exterior areas for sparks and embers.
- Check the attic and throughout the house for hidden burning, sparks and embers.
- Continue to check for problem areas for several days.
Contact 911 if any danger is perceived.

Find an occurrence of your natural disaster

When and where did it happen?
Peshtigo fire, October 8, 1871, in Peshtigo, Winconsin.

How did it impact the area/surrounding areas?

What damage did it cause?
1.2 million acres of forest have been consumed, an area 50% larger than Rhode Island. 12 communities were destroyed.

Loss of life?
An estimated 1500 to 2500 people died.

Type of clean-up required?

How did the people prepare for this event?

What is it?
Flooding is when snow melts and the rain joins in with the amount of water causing huge areas that are completely filled with water

When do they occur?

Flooding can occur during any season, but some areas of the country are at greater risk at certain times of the year. Coastal areas are at greater risk for ooding during hurricane season (i.e., June to November), while the Midwest is more at risk in the spring and during heavy summer rains. Ice jams occur in the spring in the Northeast and Northwest. Even the deserts of the Southwest are at risk during the late summer monsoon season.

Under what conditions?
when there is lots more rain then there usually is and sow melts which gives extra water. A flood can happen in all seasons but is more likely to happen from June to November?

What to do:
Before
Do not store your important documents in the basement. Keep them at a higher level, protected from flood damage.

Place sand bags around your house and prepare food and water. Fill clean containers with water so you can drink it during the flood.Shut off the electricity only if flooding has not yet begun and the area around the fuse box is completely dry.

During
Evacuate your house immediately. Make sure that you do not drink any water from taps no matter how thirsty you are. Dont drink all of your saved water in one go or else you won’t have any more water later. Be aware of the areas that the flood has affected . Do not drive through areas that are still flooded and avoid standing water as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. Do not camp near river, they can flood when you are unaware.

After
Do not re-enter your house unless authorities.Make sure the building is structurally safe.

Find an occurrence of your natural disaster

When and where did it happen?
In September, 1887, the yellow river of China flooded. It was caused by silt accumulation on the riverbed
How did it impact the area/surrounding areas?
After the flood, two million were left homeless, the later 1931 Yellow River flood may have killed as many as four million.
What damage did it cause?
It swamped agricultural settlements and commercial centres. It covered 50,000 square kilometres.
Loss of life?
It killed about 900,000 people.
Type of clean-up required?
The cleanup of the farm fields had to be undertaken immediately despite the approaching cold weather of winter.
How did the people prepare for this event?
The farmers made dykes to stop the river overflowing. The Yellow river is prone to flooding due to the elevated nature of the river, running between the dykes above the broad plains surrounding it.
