Desalination is a process that takes salt out of ocean water to make drinking water. Reverse osmosis is also used - it has a membrane that sifts the clean water out and doesn't allow the salt to mix into it anymore.

Salt in the ocean comes from two sources: runoff from the land and openings in the seafloor. Rocks on land are the major source of saltsdissolved in seawater. Rainwater that falls on land is slightly acidic, so it erodes rocks.
