Krishtakka was a very dedicated and enthusiastic person. According to her childhood, she didn't have the privilege for education and because of that very reason, she was unable to read and write. But after she understood the importance of education and literacy, she made a commitment to learn how to read and write. The granddaughter of Krishtakka understood her pain to learn how to read and write. So she taught her grandmother to read and write and the main reason for her to learn all the alphabets in a short period of time was her commitment and respect towards the imprtance of education.

The grandmother was so despirate to learn the kannada alphabets because she was illeterate and she married at a very young age so the educational opportunities was restricted to her.so she was much dedicated to learn, read and write. She was much despirate to read in perticular to read the famous novel 'KASHI YATRE' of her own.She understood the problems faced by illetaracy and started to study and practice the words. Her self realization lead to study the language. She was ready to do hard work at any cost. She regrets the old times. Now she set a goal and a set time and she achieves it.

The circumstance that led to her decision to learn the language occurred when her grand daughter was away from home, leaving her helpless.

Krishtakka realized that she was totally dependent on her grand daughter to continue reading the magazine.

Even though she was a dignified person, she indirectly asked her grand daughter to help her learn the language.

Krishtakka was so desperate that she even thought of travelling to the next village in order to make her grand daughter read the magazine for her.

She even set deadlines beforehand to be certain that she would achieve her target.

She was motivated by the thought that one day she would be able to read and write on her own.

She ignored snide remarks from her grand daughter which shows she was determined to attain the ability to read.

She invested a lot of time in doing her homework, which shows how dedicated she was.

The sense of helplessness which ruled grand mother , soon turned out to be the greatest source of motivation that made her determined to learn the alphabets.

The ample support and guidance she got from her grand daughter also turned out to play an integral part in transforming Krishtakka to a literate and independent person.

"How I taught my grandmother to read" is a story written by Sudha Murthy . The grandmother thought of herself to be similiar to the protoganist in the novel "kashi yatre" by Triveni and was in great grief when she couldn't read the weekly episode of "kashi yatre" . She felt helpless and asked her granddaughter who usually read the "kashi yatre" for her to teach her kannada alphabets . After getting her granddaughter to agree that she will teach her how to read kannada alphabets she set saraswati pooja on dasshera as her deadline . Through great dedication and hardwork , she was able to accomplish her goal and as the story ends the grandaughter gifts her grandmother "kashi yatre" novel and her grandmother readsnthe novel's name , author and the publisher's name , the story ends at the granddaughter's acknowledgement that her first student had passed with flying colours. This is a very inspirational story .
