It explains at first how phonics bridges the gap between phonology and orthography and the importance of decoding to reading. Many middle school students are being left behind because their struggle is decoding, but the remediation exercises focus on graphic organizers, annotating, or test prep. The ideal solution is a structured spelling program that would be used with small groups or independently.

This article was investigating the effects of structured phonics instruction on Kindergartener's word recognition. It showed that the effects of the program on student's word recognition were immediate, but not long lasting. A week after the post test, many of the students' scores went down. However these results and retainment varied greatly among students thus calling for some sort of differentiation in your phonics program.

This article reminds us again the importance of differentiating your instruction especially in the pre-kindergarten to 1st grade classroom when time is being given to alphabetic principle. Students will come to school with such a divide in knowledge about letters depending on the letters in their name, socio-economic status and parental involvement. Time should not be spent on letters and sounds students already know, but instead moving them across the spectrum more difficult processes with letter with multiple sounds or the relationship of letters and sounds. This can be done by assessing students and using those results to guide your groupings and instruction.

Giving each child a pair of shoes at the beginning of the year...that are all size 12. Obviously this "one size fits all" method would fail most of the children in the classroom. Formal and informal assessments can ensure we are not learning any students behind and are pushing forward the students who need to be challenged.

Students took home bags of books to read with a parent for at least fifteen minutes each night. Several Family Nights were offered for parents to come with their students and participate in activities. 78% of the participants showed growth in the amount of words per minute and 7/9 students showed growth in their reading fluency scores.
