In the book of a Child called “It” was based on actual events of Dave Pelzer when he was a young boy. In his book Dave describes the horrific abuse his mother did to him. David’s mother was an alcoholic and who also liked to “play games” that no child should ever have to endure. David learned how to play his evil mother’s games so he could survive. As an adult Dave dedicates his life to helping others who have been victims of abuse and trauma. Dave also host his own Podcast www.davepelzer.com.

Restorative Justice is seen as “Harm” which is seen as “fracturing a relationship” where punishment is not demanded. To have Restorative Justice, this is seen as a way to help seek ways to find the true needs while helping to seek out a way to help the healing process in a relationship. In the Oakland Unified School District, they have what is called the Restorative Talking circle, the circle help the victim and the offender to sit down and have an open communication of why this happened. In the Restorative Circle helps each individual to build on their social-emotional skills as well to learn/practice with patience, empathy, active listening, and impulse control. David Yusem seeks to make sure that the circle be a safe place for everyone.

Stuart Ablon

Has worked with 100’s of different backgrounds of children with behaviors. This is a major issue for teachers in the schools with teacher drop outs due to be overwhelmed due to behaviors in school, and big on referrals to mental health. “Kids do well if they can”. Development happens at different rates. When adults shift their thinking from when kids doing well if they want to, to kids do well if they can amazing things happen. We need to help children to learn to problem-solve and as teachers and families can help the children to collaborate to problem-solving.
