I think these tools and strategies are things that we could use whether we are in the classroom or doing digital learning. I personally think I would like to try using the digital choice boards because I know my students often have more buy in, are more engaged, and are more successful with the content when they have a choice in how they do the work. This would be an easy way to differentiate for my different learners, as well.

It is amazing to see all the unique and various ways that we can engage students in our classroom (digital or in-person), however; this takes time for us to learn and adapt into our classroom.

I think the best PD you could provide us with is continuing to provide us with different resources that we can implement into our classroom. I know for myself the resources and tools that you have provided us with this week during this self-directed time are extremely helpful and are going to help me best support my kids in the fall.

In the fall, I will be implementing the use of digital anchor charts. I am super interested in exploring the Explain Everything app and how that can be used to make anchor charts for middle school science. I think it is important for students to have a quick guide or resource to look at when learning new content. Something that is easy to read and is not overwhelmed with text. I think creating different one page or short digital anchor charts will help students in learning science content.

I am going to try Digital Anchor Charts next year. We are doing digital portfolios next year and I think that it will make a great addition to student portfolios. I think that it is important for students to be involved in creating anchor charts and this is the a great way to do that without creating the same anchor chart multiple times throughout the day.

How we need to go about teaching to our students. Part of the issue was we were thrown into online learning and had no idea what we were doing. It was hard to keep the kids engaged and teachers were really stressed out on how much work went into distant learning.

I think the biggest challenges will be technology itself. Sometimes during blended learning in my classroom currently, we have issues with connectivity or blockages that I have to ask IT to lift. I also worry about students themselves having access at home to complete what we are working on in school. Heather Slisher

Foreseeable challenges could include student use and navigation through the new tools. Typically, some students can easily figure out the technology on their own, while others really struggle and need that step-by-step guide for how to work through the technology so creating those digital instructions would be time consuming, but worth it in the end. Not necessarily PD, but time given during the day (like on a PD day) to create some of these new resources would be great!

It takes times to set up all the different platforms and to create the cute little digital anchor charts.
I don't know if there is a PD that could help support, as much as it is the time to do it.
I want to make sure that what I am doing is beneficial for my students and they don't have a ton of different places to go. When they are overwhelmed, they often shut down and I don't want to see that happen in the classroom. This year, I had my Google classroom already set up and students knew how to access their material... Next year, depending on what happens, I don't want to take a week of class just to show students all the different resources we may or will use. I want it simplified and easy to understand.

I liked the idea that one padlet could be used to keep your student updated when they are absent by having days labeled and pictures of what they missed. I also saw an idea of taking picture of your student projects so that you can grade at home and not have to take all of the projects home. I think I can use it in a variety of ways once I have worked with it a little more. I also like the idea of connecting a choice board to Google Classroom.

At Baldwin, we already use PBL as part of our grade level planning but it is still a very lose structure and many times we lose track of time to focus on these projects or problems. I want to utilize the choice boards as a part of the PBL to help with timing, pacing, and student choice. I do think the choice board will also help with the uncertainty of distance learning and the choice boards work well with Google Classroom. Additionally, the students can feel they have some control over the outcome and process in which they come up with their solutions/presentations. - Kristen Heath

I discovered the PenPal Schools website and, within that, I found that my students could do a poetry project (A World of Poetry is the name of it). The essential question asks them, “What can poetry teach us about communities around the world?” It then has them exploring poems and poets from all over the globe, and it gives options for them to host (or find - and possibly participate in) poetry events within the school/community. It also gives them the option to share their poetry projects on this website with people from around the world. I LOVE poetry and do a short unit on it every year, and I think this would be a great way to widen the lens of that unit. I already have my poetry unit ready to go for the fall, but now I have a way to give it a better, more purposeful focus that will also give them an experience that builds upon their knowledge of and connection with our world.

One issue that I see in working with the PenPal Schools website is honestly just learning how to navigate it. As I didn’t sign up (yet), I don’t know if I can create classes to add my students to or if they’ll all have to create their own logins. I feel like I would need to create the logins for my students so that they all have their correct usernames and passwords (and not something random that they might make up if we did it as a whole class). It would take time for me to set up their accounts, even if I called them up one by one to do it with me. It would also take me time to then learn how this website works from their perspective - can I assign them things? Is there a space for them to turn stuff in to me? How do they publish things so that others in the world can see it? How can they see other people’s things? I saw that there was an editing process in there - how does that work? I’d love a PD session that explores this website and everything we can do with it!

This is more of my opinion than a PD, but kids at HS2 were melting down because they had too many digital platforms to work on between Google Classroom, APEX, ALEKS, and more. Most of the platforms used during digital learning were platforms that were used in a blended sense in face to face, but it became too much for them to manage. We also had so many students who didn't know how to check their email, didn't know how to get to Google Drive, and more. I think we need to press pause and give the kids some PD on how the Gsuite works before we move beyond that. I also think continuity for digital platforms K-12 is necessary to help them be the most successful

We will use this knowledge base to pursue a project that utilizes an authentic audience (it is still in the works!) Some ideas that I found on PBL Works that could be included in this project are providing opportunities to digital collaboration by using google docs, increasing discussion between peers with flip grid, and perhaps using a hashtag in the project to increase audience.

All students have a chromebook; however, some might have issues with or no internet, or they might need to take care of siblings. This will cause problems if we follow a normal PBL structure because PBL includes a lot of collaboration. If some group members aren't on the same footing as the others, how do I work around that? Ideas for differentiation, I suppose, is my PD need.

This is not only because I am teaching using the New Tech model, but because I feel that problem-based learning does a lot better job of teaching students what I want them to know. Oftentimes, especially at the high school level, when students ask me when they will use that math in their lives the answer usually is they won’t unless they are going into specific career fields, HOWEVER, what I really need them to learn is the deep thinking skills, critical thinking skills, and problem solving skills and I feel like with problem based learning student’s get more of this. It also teaches them to be more independent learners and helps with differentiation of instruction so I can make sure I am meeting each student’s needs better.
-Krista Taulker

One challenge with Digi Anchor Charts

A challenge I see with Digi Anchor Charts is that you will spend all of this time creating them and then students will not use them. Students are a lot like myself...out of site, out of mind.

Plans for next fall based on today....I plan to add the choice boards for sure. I went over this in some of the PD yesterday. Although emphasized in the past, I think that bringing this up again reminds us as educators to truly consider doing this! We have great ideas and intentions and don't always think about implementing. I also have used Google Forms before as quizzes, but want to really implement that great option more!!! Lastly, our academy is currently working on Deeper Learning Units to emphasize PBL. I think it is great that we are doing this in order to really dive deeper into this. I appreciated the framework again to emphasize this as well

The challenge is always time. PDs that offer the opportunity to "do" as you learn are always important. It not only truly allows teachers to understand the concepts even more, but gives them time to make authentic/usable material

I love the idea of digital anchor charts that are student created. This year, my partner teacher and I had students use Google slides to show their learning and understanding of math concepts, but I think using a digital anchor chart might be better. I particularly like Explain Everything (I've never heard of it before today) because students not only show through text and pictures what they want to teach or demonstrate their understanding of, but they can talk with it and use it as a tool to teach others. This would be fun for math concepts in teaching their own personal strategy for solving word problems or in 4th grade, multiplication and division strategies.

An issue that might come up is how to ensure that students have a way of sharing their ideas; I'm thinking both in time management and in organization. I'm already struggling with how to organize my digital classroom for next year in a way that students feel comfortable and heard and are able to navigate the tools I want them to use without being overwhelming. I just wonder how using this tool would fit in with all of the other great tools that I like to use with my students.

I am looking forward to trying out Choice Boards during the 2020-2021 school year. Choice Boards are an excellent way to tailor instruction to each students individual needs. As an Intervention Specialist, I find that giving students options instead of choosing for them not only helps with engagement, but it also gives them a bit of "control". Choice Boards could be used during station rotations, homework, morning work, etc.

There are so many different tools that Google has to offer. One that I find very useful is the Google Forms/Quiz tool. Next school year I want to try both. Google Forms is an excellent way to track, analyze and graph behavior data. It is super simple for teachers to quickly fill out, and the various data charts make analyzing data quick and easy. Creating a quiz is also a great way to quickly assess student learning at the end of a lesson. This could be used as a quick exit ticket, or used to assess mastery at the end of a unit.

One thing that I have done a great job with during the school closure is taking advantage of many different online professional developments. This allows me to continue learning and keeping up with the virtual world, as well as learning more about areas of interest for me.
One challenge I for-see with online professional development is getting lost exploring too many options and never picking one, or getting confused and frustrated with navigating technology.

I definitely want to try Google slides. Since I am teaching summer school, I may experiment with the smaller group. I also created a flipgrid account. Again, using my summer school group will allow me to have some trial and error experiences! I would love to do digital anchor charts, but Fountas & Pinnell as well as our coaches and administration does not allow us. I think using the digital anchor charts would be a time saving technique as I spend hours creating charts that are big and bulky and never get reused.
