As a result, others are seen as different. The specification of race is present for any race except white. For example, if someone says "people" it is assumed to be white people; to talk about black people race must be specified. This concept shows racial invisibility. Being part of the dominant race and culture, white Americans don't have to think about race. John A. Powell relates this to a simillar experiance: most men don't have to think about gender because it doesn't negitivly effect them. This is the same as how white people don't have to think about race since it doesn't negitivly affect them. Whiteness isn't seen as a race or culture -- rather as normality. The hope of the black community is our nameless protagonist, and the wheel decides his fate. Yet even as he got double zeros, he still lost. Representing that even as the black community fights for success, even as they seem to be winning, they're fighting a battle that they were predetermined to lose. Racial instability is shown as a man whose made to be different and has to fight for necessities because he is not socially as normal.
