Sacredness is the first thing that will be taught and acknowledged within any religion. It is taught as a collective, meaning that even the most disconnected people from a religion will still have a reverence for the sacred if they have some sort of root in the religion. This is especially evident in the photograph on page 381, where in an extremely busy intersection in India, a sacred cow sits completely unperturbed.

Growing up, or stepping into a new role in society.

In the video we watched, the young men had to wear gloves full of bullet ants 20 times. They would experience agonizing pain (each sting 30 times more painful than a bee sting). They also did a tribal dance and participated in a ceremony simultaneously. They endured these acts of suffering to “become a better man” and make them stronger.

Part 1 – thoughts leading up to the rite of passage (we thought this would a scary part, full of anxiety)

Part 2 – participation in the rite of passage (wearing the gloves)

Part 3 – post-ritual celebration

Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke writes: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. A primitive tribe would think our phones are magic, as they cannot explain how they work. Magic to us is the secrets of the universe and how life came to be. In all, magic is anything that cannot be explained through logical means.

there are 2 types of magic, imitative which seeks a specific result, and contagious where there is a transference (both involve rituals). all of us are open to magic but are hesitant with magic beyond imitative. interestingly, our secondary source said magic is not a proper religion nor a rational science - more of a "puzzling phenomenon" (https://www.anthroencyclopedia.com/entry/magic). this is different from the book on page 384, that "religion, almost everywhere, contains some components of magic."

We described magic as the process of guiding/cultivating energy through different means to achieve a purpose. We described ways that most if not all religions use magic in one way or another. We discussed the common practice of praying as a simple way to achieve “magic” in basic religious practices. We also discussed the question of what magic really is. We asked questions like what constitutes magic, such as illusions or prayers. We discussed how there are different types of magic, such as illusions, manifestation, and other rituals. Our outside sources outline the basic idea that magic isn’t a tangible, scientifically backed process, but rather the starting point for metaphors and ideas that give off a deeper meaning to individuals.

we chose periods as our example of a rite of passage. A rite of passage is a ceremony or event marking an important stage in someone's life, especially birth, puberty, marriage, and death. A girl getting her period is her rite of passage into womanhood. Some cultures even create whole ceremonies around this, such as the kalahari tribe that, when a girl gets her period they hold a ceremony in a hut where no men are allowed, women dance around the hut and afterwards their husband joins them.
