"I'm talking about the corn that's being used as a material that's going into the foods we use ubiquitously."

I chose this quote because before watching this film I have actually noticed that a lot of the foods in my own food cabinets at home have corn in them. I found this to be very interesting and not until recently did I ever know how much corn is in society's foods. One article I found stated that high fructose corn syrup replaced cane sugar in the 1980's and is now now used a lot in products such as baked goods, dairy products, and sauces (Beil, 2013). With high fructose corn syrup becoming more and more common, one can only think of any consequences to consuming these products.
Sweet confusion: Does high fructose…

"Our overall consumption of sweeteners has gone up more than 30% largely because of a dramatic increase in our consumption of high fructose corn syrup."

There has been a dramatic increase in the consumption of high fructose corn syrup because it has become the substitute of some other sugars that were previously used. That is why I chose this quote. It appears to be that there may be a possible connection with consuming high fructose corn syrup and weight gain. An article I found stated that one study found that animals who were given basic feed gained less weight than those who consumed a high fructose corn syrup diet (Sadowska & Bruszkowska, 2017). One may relate this to when humans consume products that contain high fructose corn syrup.
Comparing the effects of sucrose and…

"Prior to about 1970, nobody ate high fructose corn syrup because it was too expensive to make. Today the dominant sugar in the Western diet now comes from corn."

Corn really has been the dominant sugar in the 'Western Diet' in recent years. An article I found stated that the consumption of added sugars has increased within the last 30 years (Lowndes, et al. 2012). The consumption of high fructose corn syrup may potentially cause unintended consequences. The previously mentioned article also mentioned some investigators have look into a possible link between these added sugars and weight gain (Lowndes, et al. 2012). With America's obesity problem increasing, one may look to the consumption of high fructose corn syrup as one of the causes to it. Although the consumption of high fructose corn syrup may not be the primary cause of weight gain or obesity, it could certainly be something to consider.
The effects of four hypocaloric diets containing…

"Food and beverage manufacturers were looking for a lower cost sugar substitute. By the late 80's we have take over half of the sweetened market in the United States."

I chose this quote because of how much the food appears to have changed in my own generation. A lot of my peers eat out a lot especially quick cheap meals such as fast food which sells soft drinks that will probably contain high fructose corn syrup. Although high fructose corn syrup may be a cheaper cost sugar substitute, it may cause other unintended consequences. One article in particular found that increasing body weights and obesity rates are parallel to the consumption of high fructose corn syrup (Meyers, et al. 2017). This article brings up the idea that today's soft drinks may contribute to weight gain.
High fructose corn syrup induces…

I chose this quote because it is interesting to think that what society does to help us is potentially harming us. One article stated that there has been research that has been able to link United States high school students that have asthma to the consumption of high fructose corn syrup (DeChristopher, et al. 2015). As someone who actually has asthma it is scary to think that consuming products such as some soft drinks could be correlated to having asthma. High fructose corn syrup has been used in a lot more products today than in the past. I think it is very important for those that consume these products to be aware of the potential outcomes.
Intake of high fructose corn syrup…
