North Korea is a marginal player when it comes to contributing to the international community because of its physical size, small population and lack of economic development. The nuclear weapons program is North Korea's only claim to importance in the world.
Modern nuclear fuel reprocessing allows North Korea to maximize it's arsenal by number of weapons and potency of those weapons.
It is dangerous for North Korea to possess these weapons because the nation is rouge and potentially unpredictable.
Motivation for the nuclear weapons program was caused by the United States constant threat of using the devices during the Korean war.
North Korea is potentially dangerous because of it's geopolitical position between China and Russia, with ROK to the south and Japan to the east, North Korea has the potential to influence those major superpowers.

Post-WWII geopolitics was the reason for the division of Korea.
Basically the Soviet set-up shop in North Korea and introduced them to communism. The United States set-up shop in SOuth Korea and introduced a democratic society.
The reunification of North and South Korea would not work because the two are in fact very different countries. The economy of South Korea would most likely collapse trying to fix the economy of North Korea. South Korean politics would dominate the new government because their politicians are more affluent and numerous. The willingness to inflict suffering on their citizens that North Korea displays would clash with the ideology of South Korean politics.

America immediately announced their intentions to defend South Korea and entered Korea via Japan and stopped North Korean forces from advancement. America's intervention was part of a United Nations operation. January of 1951 battle lines stopped at the 38th parallel which is where the division remains today. In 1953 negotiations were made for a cease fire.
As a result of the was the North Korean military was left decimated by America and UN allies. The Chinese were the only one's who stopped America from unifying Korea under anti-communist rule. South Korea was more prosperous and considered an economic miracle of Asia as a result of the war.
