This may not be very profound, but throughout the different reading pieces, there seemed to be a common idea that if you aren't taking care of yourself it becomes harder to take care of others (Zeller, n.d.). When our own self-care is off, there is a domino effect that begins to take palce in other areas of our lives and we are not at our best.

Throughout our understanding of self-care, it is important to find out what fills your battery. In church, we have always talked about the fact that you can't pour from an empty cup. If we continue do activities that are filling our battery, then we are not as likely to feel the burnout and compassion fatigue taht comes along with our job at times.

It is important to stay aware of your own senses and how they are impacting your career. We must be aware of our psychological, physical, intellectual, and spiritual well-being. It "takes intentional effort and real determination" to work on your own self-care (Shallcross, 2013).

There is a need to maintain basic stress management in the field of working as a helper. My intention to practice self-care strategies include monitoring my eating habits. When I am stressed or overwhelmed, I tend to overeat or eat foods that are not filling. Through monitoring my eating habits, I can ensure that I am fueling my body with foods that will leave me more filled and not leave me more groggy.

As a mom of 3 children that still need a lot of assistance, I take time to myself by going to the store alone, taking time to pamper myself with getting my nails done, and spending time quietly reading in a cozy area to "fill my cup".
