1) Expand my repertoire
        I have never taken private lessons before so I currently have a very small and limited repertoire especially when it comes to etudes and solos. I hope to expand my repertoire during this and future semesters so that I am better equipped for auditions.

2) Improve the consistency of my articulations
        One of my weakest areas in my playing is my articulations, more specifically in multi-tonguing. I want to improve the consistency of my articulations and improve my tongue and finger alignment when multi-tonguing through moving lines.

3) Improve the consistency of my range
I have a fairly decent range, generally from pedal C to double G, however it is not always consistent. Some days my range tops off at an E or F and other days I can get all the way up to a double B or C. Improving the consistency of my range is a big priority for me.

3/11/22 Lesson (In Person)

Started my lesson by going through my usual warm-up routine with Barbara. She gave me a lot of good feedback as I went through this process, most of it having to do with my air support. After i finished my usual routine Barbara gave me some new warm-ups to incorporate into my routine as well as gave me feedback on what things I should cut out or adjust in my routine.

My adjusted routine is as follows;
1) Long tones, no louder than mp. Focusing on producing a great song and keeping the air stream steady.
2) Stamp, no louder than mf. Focusing on connecting the notes and creating a longer phrase rather than just playing each note.
3) Lip slurs, no louder than mf. Main goal in my lip slurs right now is connecting notes with larger leaps (more than 1 partial).
4) Scales/Articulation, no louder than mf. These are grouped into 1 category because it allows me to work on 2 skills at once and condense my warm-up routine.

Following this routine I am generally about 80% warmed up which always me to continue to warm up throughout the rehearsal or the rest of my practice time and increase my endurance as well as my peak performance time.

Because Barbara was busy during our usual lesson time on Friday, we had a virtual lesson on Monday instead. I started out by playing my new adjusted warm-up routine for her. She gave some great feedback about how had already improved a lot in just a few days. She also gave me some great advice on how to use a metronome when practicing. Some exercises such as my lip slurs should always be practiced with a met and I should be keeping track of my tempos and gradually increasing them. Other exercises such as stamp or long tones do not require a met. By the time I got through my routine and received all my feedback our lesson was almost over so we spent the last few minutes listening to my jury piece, Andante et Allegro. I had a few minutes to ask Barbara some questions had and we had a great discussion about her experiences with different lesson teachers over the years and then we ended the lesson.

This week I spent a lot of time working on my new warm-up routine.
Although the general outline of my routine did not change much, the specific exercises that I now use are much different from what I used before. Being a self taught musician, I have never really changed my warm-up routine much if at all throughout the years so this is a big adjustment for me. I was struggling with this new routine the first few days but by the end of the week I am starting to get used to it. I still have not seen much personal growth yet, but I do tend to be pretty hard on myself so we will see what happens as time goes on.

I did not have a lesson this week so I just continued to work on what was given to me during my previous lesson. I am starting to see minor improvements in my skill as I slowly adjust to my new routine. I can definitely feel a difference in the way my horn responds to increased airflow. I am more focused on taking bigger breaths and putting more air through the horn. I am trying to build this into a habit so that I don't have to actively think about it each time I take a breath.

This week I was in Ohio Thursday and Friday so I did not get in as much practice time as I usually would. I also did not have a lesson this week so I began to focus a little more on my jury piece. I am struggling to line up my fingers with my tongue at faster tempos so this is a skill that I will continue to develop and mention to Barbara the next time I see her.
