In 1848 the war between the Unites Sates and Mexico came to a close with the united States gaining Texas and joining the unions as a slave state. As seen before as new states join the Union deciding whether they are a slave state or free state was a huge factor in political balance. This in turn lead Texas to join the confederacy during the Civil War since it approved slavery and was apart of its economy.

Happening in 1854, Kansas-Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri Compromise, meaning that the residents would determine of the area was a free state or not. Anti-Slavery groups and Pro-Slavery groups fought to win, causing deaths. This also played a role during the Civil War, Kansas suffered the highest rate of fatal casualties of any Union state, largely because of its great internal divisions over the issue of slavery.
