I believe that all students should have the ability to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns at all ages without it being taken in a negative manner. This can be seen as an issue to some because many believe that a “child” should not carry emotions or feelings. Students who understand that it is acceptable to speak their emotions have a better chance of being an advocate for themselves in the future.

School Counselor Competency Assessment

This assessment was much needed for me to understand in strengths and weaknesses. While completing this assessment, I was very calm and relaxed, therefore i believe that my results are accurate. I was not shocked by my results because I am an individual that ask for feedback from my direct supervisors, this allows me to be aware of what areas I need to improve in. The main weakness that I agree to have having is not enough knowledge in cultural competencies. This is understandable to me because I have not experienced working with children of different backgrounds and cultures. This is something that I am eager to develop and have a better understanding of.

A strength that I am aware that I have is being a leader. I do not mind taken initiative to leading a group or being a spokesperson for others. This has built my confidence and I believe that this will help in my career as a school counselor because there must be the ability to lead in order to successfully complete the role. I also understand that a leader must carry the ability to listen and remain within the ethical limits.

I would like to take this assessment again once i have successfully finished the program and see the progress that I have made. My hopes are to continue to grow and have a better understanding of the role of a school counselor.
