He began to gain power by becoming the leader of the radial "mountain group". He eventually gained power and control over the Jacobins. He also started The Reign of Terror. The purpose of this was to clear France of enemies of the Revolution and protect the country from foreign invaders. He wanted to make sure that the French Revolution did not fail so anyone who opposed the revolutionary government was arrested or executed.
