Examples of performance assessment: 

Science Experiment: Have students design and carry out their own experiment to test a scientific hypothesis. The students can then present their results and explain their methods and findings.

Historical Reenactment: Have students research and prepare a dramatic reenactment of a historical event or person. They can present their performance to the class or to an audience.

Math Project: Have students work in groups to create a real-world math problem, find a solution, and present their process and solution to the class.

Reading Comprehension Performance: Have students read a book or story and then act out key scenes or present a book report in the form of a play, puppet show, or presentation.

They give an insight into a student's current knowledge and skill level, allowing teachers to modify and redesign a current curriculum or activity being taught to close the gaps identified from the diagnostic assessment.  These assessments can be used at any point in the school year, but are often utilized at the beginning of the school year to get a better understanding of the students in a new class. This information is also helpful for administrators, as it can be used to make decisions on how to help newer students that have just joined a classroom or course.


Diagnostic assessments can take many forms, such as oral quizzes, classroom discussions, or standardized tests. However, national standardized tests are less effective in being used as a diagnostic assessment as some do not allow students to assess questions or concepts they misunderstood or got wrong in these tests. The summarized aim of diagnostic tests is to determine what students already know and what they need to learn.

While it is more common for teachers to use diagnostic tests to see what students do not know, they can equally be used to encourage students to further pursue education in a certain topic or field they excel at, provided they find it enjoyable. Diagnostic assessments can assist students at a high school level to choose a major they would like to pursue their education in further, as well as help university students decide their career paths, post-college.

In conclusion, diagnostic assessments provide information that can be used to guide lesson planning and curriculum design, and enable educators to provide targeted support to individual students. With the use of diagnostic assessments, educators are better equipped to create an environment that is supportive and effective in helping students reach their full potential.
