Disney is a famous, well known creator of media, specifically movies, since the 1900s. What many people don't know is that their content has had very few changes in terms of diversity and inclusion since its beginning. This lack of diversity throughout these productions is what results in Disney contributing to oppression and intersectionality in a negative light.

The issue of intersectionality is one of extreme importance. Oppression throughout history has not only been based on race, but also on gender, sexuality, disability, and anything else that may be labeled as “wrong” or “other” by the mainstream, which is, in other words, intersectionality. Stereotypes and other factors that may contribute to the increase of intersectional discrimination are often increased through the media, and in this case media produced by Walt Disney Studios.

While commonly overlooked, Disney does have a negative contribution to the world in terms of stereotypes that it creates in its media, and which become social norms because of the productions’ popularity. So, the next time you dive into one of their popular films, be sure to think about the impacts made on society, for better or worse!

The film spreads negative messages about women's rights. Ariel gives up her voice and identity to be with a man she has never met, which is found to be acceptable. This reflects very negatively considering all of the women who have given up their voice or never had a chance to speak out on important issues, which reflects poorly on Disney.

Throughout the film, Cinderella accepts things such as mistreatment and abuse, and never stands up for herself, which should never be encouraged. Additionally, throughout the film, the movie bases women’s worth on their appearance, mentioning that they must be pretty enough to live a life of glamor, otherwise they would be forced to serve those who were. Cinderella teaches viewers to be content serving people like a "good woman" should, because she never stands up for herself. This supports negative stereotypes by feeding into them.

Mulan supports stereotypes about women throughout its course. It is expected that women tend to the children and the home while men can have free will. The film encourages women to lead a life where the only positivity they could bring was by having children, while men could fight for a noble cause.

Because Ariel lacks a voice, she is treated as though she is disabled throughout the end of the film. Her attempts at communication are laughed at and overlooked. She is depicted as being laughed at or ignored, which teaches that this treatment towards disabilities is acceptable when that is not at all the case.

The Lion King depicts the villains of the movie to have characteristics of poor, homosexual people of color. The film uses these "unwanted traits" to contribute negatively towards stereotypes, mostly through Scar and his world. They are portrayed as evil and wrong throughout, while the "heroes" are presented as traditional and hyper masculine. Not only does the film foster hatred towards these villainous characters, but its impact spans to the parties who also fall within the stereotypes.

Pocahontas' character depicts an issue throughout pop culture: the over sexualization of women of color. Her dress is shorter than white princesses, her body is more focused upon, and she is depicted to be more exotic and sensual than princesses who are white. This intersection between women of color and sexualization is clearly represented through the film, though it should be frowned upon.
