The origin of his research was to find an improvement in resolution and definition of the images of the electron microscope . For his theoretical contribution to holographic techniques he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971.

The holograms of Gabor were very poor, the light sources used. The technique was improved years later with the development of the laser and with the contribution of other researchers during the 1960s. Among others, it is worth mentioning Emmett Leith and Juris Upatnieks (United States) or Yuri Denisyuk (USSR). They were the first to use the hologram to record three-dimensional images using the laser beam as a source.
