The strongest emotion brought up by the text creator is isolation. This is because the creator is desperately trying to explain her mental state to her mother, but she is never understood. Her mother constantly combats her explanations in negative ways. This demonstrates that strong sense of isolation the creator must be feeling. This is reinforced throughout the text by how the writer responds to her mother’s dialogue. For example, her mother “happy is a decision”, and in response we are told “my happy is as hollow as a pin pricked egg.” This clearly emphasizes the misunderstanding between the girl and her mother. Since she is constantly misunderstood, it can be assumed that she is very isolated from her loved ones

Desolate

The emotion we found key in this piece is desolate. This emotion means in a state of bleak and dismal emptiness. “Hollow auditorium of my chest swoons with echoes of a heartbeat”. This metaphor relates to our emotion because it’s talking about the emptiness inside of her. Shown through hollow which means to be empty on the inside. The echoing is showing how she used to be a child and happy and now she is empty and hears the echoing of her heartbeat from the past. There is a lot of personification of depression and anxiety. Which is showing her powerless and how these feeling are taking over her leaving her empty. “Careless tourist”, this is showing she is there for a limited time yet it seems she doesn’t care to be there leaving her with nothing to care or be excited for. This leads to her emptiness and bleak life.

The primary emotion that we felt was solitude and isolation. The character felt this way because her mom wasn’t understanding her because she didn’t have the same definition of depression as what the daughter felt. The mom’s lack of understanding is shown by how she constantly down plays her daughters feelings, which takes a toll on the daughter. This leads the character to feel frustrated because she doesn’t have an outlet. The use of anaphora emphasizes her plea for her mom to understand her. The metaphors used create imagery for the reader to better understand how the character feels. The character wanted her mom’s help because she too is confused about her depression as evidence from the lines “Mom still doesn’t understand / Mom! Can’t you see neither can I”.

Explaining My Depression to My Mother: A Conversation question

Our group decided the most prominent feeling in this poem is isolation. The craft moves that best demonstrate isolation is the “conversation” between the characters. The more she attempts to speak with her mother the more separate she feels, because her mother doesn’t understand her struggles. For example when the author outlines her insomnia the mother recommends counting sheep, which is not a proper solution to insomnia. Every time she tries to share with her mother she offers a solution rather than actually engaging in proper dialogue. The title is also somewhat ironic, because this is not really a conversation, she’s just offering surface level solutions. This is just the author talking at her mother and her mother is unresponsive to her daughter’s attempts to find comfort in conversing with her mother.

For our group discussion every member in our group was able to identify a different but very prevalent emotion in the poem. Some of the emotions that were brought up we’re the feelings of indignant, melancholy, helplessness, and confinement. The craft move we identified was euphemism and the evidence of where we found this was in the lines “mom I am the party. Only I am a party that I don’t want to be at”.
