During the Civil War there were two groups of people, pro-slavery and anti-slavery. People who were Pro-slavery believed slaves were treated right, - better than factory workers in the North- that African Americans were better off as slaves and that slaves were the workers producing majority of the goods for the south. An abolitionist named Harriet Stowe wrote a book informing others how owning slaves is incorrect when it came to use them for labor and mistreating them physically as-well.

Overtime during the Civil War slavery grew and enlarged over the United States. The Republican Party was created in 1854 and approved of slavery however disapproved whenever new states wanted to become a slave state. As debates arose when it came to have new slave states, various compromises were created to solve the issues that came along. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 made Maine a free state while Missouri was a slave state. Some states became slave states to create stability such as Florida in 1884. Popular sovereignty was developed to help states decide whether or not they should become a slave or free state by voting. Also, the Fugitive Slave Act was invented to send slaves back into the South if found in the Northern free states.

In the year 1860, Abraham Lincoln election and the South thought he was against slavey and try getting rid of slavery although he said he cannot control the slavey in other states meaning he can only shape the free states because he holds enough power to do that. During the year, Lincoln wins with less than half votes from his majority of his supporters were from the North, being 40%from the popular vote. As Lincoln was elected South Carolina published “Declaration of the Causes of Secession”, motivating going against the Union. Before President Lincolns Election about 7 states split from the Union, including Florida. In February the Confederacy was created along with the first Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
