Community Engagement Plan For ELLs

My community engagement plan is designed to support ELLs whose first language is Russian. The plan is specifically designed for implementation at a private school that provides a modified curriculum, differentiation, small group instruction, and pull-out interventions. The goal of this plan is to create a meaningful collaboration among educators, families, and the community to improve student success and support cultural inclusivity.

The strategies I propose are based on culturally responsive practices and are intended to build connections between home and school. To begin, I would organize a welcome event for Russian-speaking families, where interpreters and translated materials will be provided to help explain school programs, expectations, and available services. Ongoing communication with families would be supported through bilingual newsletters and scheduled meetings (with individual families, and group meetings) with interpreters present to ensure understanding and promote participation.

To increase academic support and involvement at home, I plan to host literacy nights featuring shared reading activities, vocabulary-building games, and parent workshops. These sessions would empower families to support learning at home in ways that honor their native language and culture. Additionally, I will explore partnerships with local Russian cultural organizations to enhance cultural representation in the curriculum and classroom activities.

In the classroom, I will use data-informed small group instruction and pull-out interventions to support Russian-speaking ELLs. These lessons will be scaffolded with visual aids, sentence frames, and modified assessments to address specific language and academic needs. The instruction will align with our school’s differentiated approach to ensure every student can access the content and develop language skills simultaneously.

This plan draws on intellectual resources from Everyone Wins! (Dana et al., 2019), which emphasizes the importance of community collaboration, equity, and cultural responsiveness in school improvement efforts. By creating intentional pathways for family involvement and community engagement, this plan reflects a commitment to meeting students’ diverse needs and promoting academic achievement within a supportive learning environment.

Understanding the resources and supports available through the school and community allows me to advocate effectively for my students and their families. This engagement plan not only strengthens educational outcomes, but also builds trust across cultural lines, which is promotes for long-term success.

References
Dana, N.

Equitable Engagement Practices Across Populations, by ensuring inclusive and culturally responsive practices that consider students’ race, language, and socioeconomic status. Hosting a welcome event for Russian-speaking families, with interpreters and translated materials, ensures that linguistic differences do not become barriers to understanding school programs, expectations, and services. Providing bilingual newsletters and holding interpreter-supported family meetings promotes equitable access to information, communication, and participation.

Bridge Relationships Across Populations, this plan emphasizes sustained, trust-based relationships between school staff and diverse families. Literacy nights and parent workshops are designed to empower families as partners in their children’s education. These gatherings encourage dialogue and shared experiences that affirm families’ cultural identities and build relational trust. Incorporating Russian cultural elements into classroom activities, with support from local organizations, further strengthens these bridges by validating students' cultural heritage.
