  • Function = necessary words for grammar
    •    Content words give us the most important information. Content words are usually nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs give us important information required for understanding.
       Function words help us connect important information. Funtion words include auxiliary verbs, prepositions, articles, conjunctions, and pronouns.

  • Derivational morphemes change the meaning and/or part of speech of a root.
    – Adding –un to the word do changes the meaning 
    drastically 
    – Adding –ish to the noun boy creates the adjective boyish
  • Inflectional morphemes never change the part of speech of the root. Example : – waited, waits, waiting. Inflectional morphemes are always suffixes in English and always follow any derivational morphemes. Example : – commit + ment can become commit + ment + s but not commit + s + ment.

  • Roots: the morpheme base upon which other morphemes are attached to create complex words: un-love-able 
  • Stems is a word that is given a certain affix but does not change the type of word.  For example root is a noun then steam must be a noun, if root is an adjective then steam is also an adjective.
  • A base is any form to which affixes of any kind can be added. This means that any root or any stem can be termed a base, but not all bases can be root and stem.
