Today, we officially adopted our Serai (Cymbopogon citratus) plant for the e-portfolio project. The plant is young, with a few upright green stalks emerging from the soil. It appears healthy, with fresh green leaves and sturdy stems, suggesting that it has been well-cared for up to this point.

As we begin this journey, we will closely monitor its growth and ensure it receives the necessary care, including appropriate sunlight, water, and nutrients. This marks the first day of our four-week commitment to observing and nurturing our adopted Serai plant.

Local Name: Serai (Commonly Known as Lemongrass)

In the local context, particularly within Southeast Asia, Serai is the widely used name for Lemongrass. It is a fragrant, tall grass species known for its citrus-like aroma and flavor. Serai is commonly used in various local cuisines, particularly in Thai, Malaysian, and Indonesian dishes, where it imparts a refreshing lemony flavor to soups, curries, teas, and marinades. The plant also has cultural significance in many regions, often linked to traditional practices for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

We are using a pre-mixed soil blend, commonly available for purchase at most nurseries in the Kuching area.

To repot our plant from a garden plot into a proper pot, we need to prepare a suitable mixed soil that ensures healthy growth.

The soil mix we use for repotting my lemongrass plant includes cocopeat, charcoal, cooked soil, and organic compost. Each component plays a vital role in supporting the healthy growth of our lemongrass.

Cocopeat is primarily a soil conditioner rather than a nutrient source. It improves moisture retention and soil aeration but doesn’t provide nutrients itself but it helps roots access the nutrients in the soil more effectively.

Cocopeat enhances soil porosity, allowing for better root growth and aeration, while also retaining moisture without becoming waterlogged, which is crucial for lemongrass as it prefers consistently moist conditions.

Charcoal is a soil amendment that enhances drainage and absorbs toxins, keeping the soil healthier for root growth. It indirectly supports nutrient uptake by keeping the root zone free from harmful substances.

Charcoal can also improve the overall soil structure and increase microbial activity that can enhance plant nutrient availability.

This is the primary nutrient source in the mix since it contains essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that are important for plant growth.

Compost also introduces beneficial microbes, improving nutrient availability and promoting good soil health.

Space: As a plant grows, its roots expand and eventually outgrow its container. If roots become crowded, the plant becomes root-bound, limiting its ability to take up water and nutrients effectively.

Nutrient Refreshment: Repotting with fresh soil replenishes these essential nutrients, giving the plant a new source of energy for continued growth.

Improved Drainage and Aeration: As soil ages, it compacts, leading to poor drainage and reduced airflow to the roots.

Pest and Disease Control: Older soil can harbor pests, fungi, or bacteria that may harm the plant and by repotting, it helps to reduce the risk of these issues and give the plant a cleaner and healthier environment.

Increased Stability: Larger plants need a stable base, and repotting into a bigger pot with fresh soil can provide better support.
