This book is a great one for discussing all kinds of emotions with elementary age children. This is a sort of "choose your own adventure" book where the reader gets to make choices for Danny and see what happens. It is a great way to understand consequences as the children see real-world examples of life events that can make things better or worse.

Amazon Purchase Link

Levy, A.

This sweet book shows what it is like to move and say by to friends and hello to others. While this likely fits a slightly younger audience best, the imagery is nice and the illustrations are fun. It makes discussing a harder topic a bit easier.

Amazon Purchase Link

Doerrfeld, C.

This activity book could be a great compliment to discussing many emotions that children hold in the library when paired with a visit by the school social worker/counselor/psychologist. In this book, there are opportunities to write about feelings, color about them and express in other ways.

Amazon Purchase Link

Coombs, S.

Students will all read Esperanza Rising. The librarian will then lead a discussion about the book for the group. This will include:

1. Esperanza likely felt many emotions after he life changed dramatically. Do you think disappointment was one of them?

2. Do you think that you would have felt disappointed in this situation?

3. Recall other times in your own life that you have felt disappointed. Can you name one? As classmates are mentioning their examples, think about if you would have felt the same way.

After the discussion, the librarian will read The Most Magnificent Thing to bring up another example of disappointment - trying and failing over and over. The students will then be instructed to pull out paper and crayons to draw about a disappointing scene in either book or a disappointing event in their own lives, if they prefer. Students can share their drawings with the class if they are comfortable.

Objectives:

Students will be able to name three possible emotions felt by Esperanza when her father passed and her life was changed.

Students will come up with a disappointing part of the book or their own lives and draw it out on paper.

Students will listen to what others feel in terms of emotions evoked by the story to compare to their own emotions.

So that students learn how to deal with disappointment, this activity involves partnering with the school psychologist. The librarian will first read Christmas is Canceled and then tell students to hold their thoughts. The psychologist will follow second and read Evelyn Del Ray is Moving Away.

Both books highlight different disappointing events - holidays getting canceled and friends moving away. Ask how these would make students feel?

Next, the psychologist can refer to a page in the Letting Go! Mindful Kids book for the students to work on. They can individually write and draw about their disappointing thoughts. They will then walk around and check on student's answers individually for comfort and privacy. The focus is on how they have dealt with disappointment.

Finally, the students will be asked to partner up and suggest ideas for what to do when disappointed. They will write their ideas down and one student from each pair will be responsible to report out to the class.

Objectives:

Students will be able to name 3 ideas for handling disappointment.

Students will write down ideas for handling disappointment and complete a worksheet on the same topic.

Students will listen to each other's examples and gather new perspectives.
