In the 1990s, NATO started bombing Kosovo under the name of "Humanitarian War" because of Serbia's actions. The Serbians attacked Kosovo with many vicious attacks when they tried for independence. This led to the migration of many Kosovo citizens. Neighboring countries such as Albania opened the borders for these fleeing civilians. However, Albania wasn't able to allow so many refugees, so they created up the Emergency Management Group. The group raised funds from other countries, such as Germany. In the end, NATO stepped in to help Serbia and Kosovo stop the war with the Kumanovo Treaty and most of the refugees were able to go back.

The biggest reason for their migration was the war occurring between NATO, Kosovo, and Serbia. If they stayed back, they or their families could’ve been hurt, so they had no choice but to leave. Since the civilians didn’t have much of a choice to stay, it would be forced migration

As a result of a revolutionary war, the citizens of Kosovo had to migrate outside of the country. Because the war was taking place inside the country, moving internally would not have helped their situation. Many European countries and the US agreed to accept them temporarily; therefore, they migrated across different nations.

The push factor, internal conflict, made them want to leave the country. The Serbians were brutal and killed many of Kosovo’s citizens. It was either stay and live in the middle of the war, and be potentially killed or leave the country. Given the choice, most of them chose to leave the country.

In the case of Kosovo, many countries that temporarily housed them required the refugees to return once the war was over. Sometimes, the Europeans were hesitant to allow them to bring their extended families, in fear that they would stay there permanently once their whole family arrived. After the war, the Kosovans mostly returned which is stated as “the counter migration” in this law.

When the Kosovans migrated, they mostly went to nearby countries. The top destinations were Albania, Montenegro, Republic of Macedonia and Bosnia. After that, some went to Europe while the US also accepted some. It can be seen that the majority went to neighboring countries, and the farther away (USA), the less they moved.

The furthest country they migrated too would probably be the United States. Most of them that were brought in were air dropped in New Jersey. Since America was the only long distance migration, and they were dropped in a more urban area, Ravenstein’s law is accurate for this example.

This law doesn't relate to the migration from Kosovo because the citizens weren't moving by choice but instead were being forced out. Urban and Rural residents moved out of the country in hordes to avoid war and crippling economic recession. This law doesn't apply because this is not a normal circumstance.

This law was the opposite of what happened this time. During the invasion, the families were the most eager to move away because they feared for each other's safety. In contrast, the younger adults that were not yet married worked in the war against Serbia. Based on how families were the ones that mainly moved to neighboring countries while young adults stayed. This can be reflected in the country's demographics, as 70% of people in the country are below 35 years old. The law is not correct in this case.

The migration mainly occurred between neighboring countries. When the distance got further, the migrant numbers decreased as well. For countries around Kosovo, the number of migrants could tally up to 600,000; however, the amount that went to the US was only 20,000 migrants. In this case, the law is correct because the further they migrate, the less they move.

They believed that once they got there they would at least have the basic necessities such as water, food, and shelter. Overall, the pull factors are related to this migration because they were encouraged to migrate for safety.
