How is “blindly following tradition”(following traditions in the past without understanding them) a concept in both stories?

Forgotten Elements in "The Lottery"

Many things that used to be apart of the lottery tradition have been forgotten by the people that participate in it. This means that they don't actually care about the original tradition and just participate in it because everyone else is. "... some people believed that the official of the lottery used to stand just so when he said or sang it, others believed that he was supposed to walk among the people, but years and years ago this part of the ritual had been allowed to lapse." If the lottery tradition was actually important to the townspeople then they would have tried to keep the original elements of the lottery relevant.

Proof that the People of the Town Follow by Example.

In "The Lottery", many events occur that prove the townspeople are following an example. For instance the story literally says that the boys are following Bobby Martin's example when they are getting stones. "Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones...". Based on the words used in the sentence from the story, it can be inferred that the other boys only started to gather stones because Bobby Martin was doing it and not because it was necessary for the lottery.
