-a bit too short
-cliffhanger ending, but it's very hopeful
-title is a play on words (the term WASP contrasted with their situation)
-Zoe is flawed character but she's very clearly shown in an empathetic light. she clearly loves her kids even if she isn't a very good parent
-handheld camera, very tight shots
-interesting and sensitive topic to cover
-good child actors, Zoe is well casted too

All of the guys suck except the gay guy, but it’s done very purposefully

His portrayal was starkly different from the rest

When he tried to give the red packet, he put it on the table instead of shoving it in her face

When the other men started barking, he howled instead

Unlike how the other men started barking when they were with the girls, the guy sniffed his potential partner first at the end

Acts like an extended metaphor of the dog nature, he is more cautious/less hedonistic

Similar to this, the protagonist seems like she is out of her element, in the sense that she doesn’t want to flaunt herself for money

Scary to think this situation would be very real

There was circular storytelling (starting and ending with the timer)

We like that it’s told from an eighteen year old girl’s POV

Kind of like the peak of a woman’s age, makes their lust even more disgusting

The dancing scene and the car scene that follows shows the youth of the two characters (little bit like their childish nature)

interpretation 1: suicide. the boy’s desire for death is translated into his desire to become a fish. fishes are a motif for death in the film—they are constantly seen laying dead in the market and butchered violently in the restaurant. in the end, the dad is not able to save his son from his fate.

interpretation 2: going for your dreams. the boy’s outlandish desire to be a fish is not understood nor accepted by his father, no matter how desperately the son showcases this dream. in the end, the son goes on to pursue it anyway, leaving his father’s grasp. the conflict between the father’s dream of his son becoming a sushi chef, and the son’s desire to become a fish—the very thing his father kills—probably also adds to the reluctance of the father to accept his son’s aspirations.
