To me, characteristics of a powerful experience include students asking questions and making connections. When students ask clarifying questions, that proves to me that they are making sense of what is being taught. Notebooks allow students to think critically and make sense of their own thinking. How? By allowing students to express themselves artistically (drawings) and in written form. Notebooks help students keep track of their thinking which results in amazing discussions. 😁

Powerful learning involves students having an opportunity to work with the material in a variety of ways and make connections with past knowledge. The more actively they can interact with it, the more they can understand it. Notebooks give students the space to do this. They can draw models, create summaries, add prior knowledge, assess their own learning, etc. Physically writing these things down incorporates more parts of their brain and helps them retain the information.

Notebooking fosters ownership of learning. Students have a spot where they place what they have learned. They organize it, they make the information/data theirs. They have the opportunity to illustrate and revise what they have put in their journal. Notebooking is interactive, it's engaging/hands-on. We use doodle notes/sketchnotes so they get a chance to draw and color in their notebook. The more they do with the information in their notebook, the more they create, the more knowledge they retain, and because it's their creation, their thoughts, there’s more student buy-in.

I believe note booking is a powerful organizational skill that allows students to keep all their continued work in one place. Students can see their progress as they advance and can always revisit past topics rather than having to rummage through their backpacks. Also, this engaging activity helps students own their learning by creating the notebook to their own linking in terms of colors, drawings, formatting, and overall design. By having this continuous stream of knowledge at their disposal allows them to make connections to prior material and truly show how powerful note booking can be in the learning process.

Notebooking helps learners connect the dots by recording ideas in a way that makes it easier to recall, reflect, reorganize, and record outcomes. From the perspective of the teachers, notebooks make it easier for the teacher to "see" where students are at in the process in order to help guide the student in the right direction.
