Old West

Old west was after the civil war. It occurred in the western part of the United States of America. After the Mexican revolution people decided to move on to the native land which cause and array of conflicts.

Cowboys and outlaws (a person who has broken the law , maybe a fugitive) made it very dangerous as people were always getting shot.

After the civil war millions of Americans were released from slavery they head to the west to start and build their lives.

Desert land Act

The desert land act was to motivate people to settling in unwanted land (poor soil) it also allowed for married couples to purchase land for as little as $1.25 per acre. However those taking part didn’t have to live on the property allowing for fraudulent act to happen

For example some took advantage of the scheme and built farms land instead of building houses.

Expansion

Many moved because of opportunities . However the lands in the west didn’t have very much water and had extremely hot weather making it even more difficult to farm and grow plant and vegetables meaning that they relied mostly on killing animals.

Many native Americans died of starvation due to many years of buffaloes being killed for their skin.

Before the civil war the government purchased and shipped a large amount of Egyptian camels as they thought that they would be better performing than horses in the heat. However many Camels escaped after the civil war had started leaving many displaced, roaming the wild

Cowboys

Cowboys were a big part of the Western Expansion

Cowboys were itinerant laborers working 14-hour days at low wages  forcing them to live Hard Lives.

They were often malnourished, lonely, many of them not being American (1 in 4 were African-American).

Settlers - People who migrated to live in the west many of them being African American (former slaves),Hispanic American and European settlers

Cowboys - mainly young men who need cash. Some not only hearded cattle but also participated in the care of horses, fixing fences and repairing property.

Native Americans - First inhabitants of America (before European settlers) they had many tribes who practiced hunting, agriculture and Aqua farming ( farming within the sea like fish algae and sea plants)

Miners  - Men who dug for metals and precious minerals such as gold ,silver, zinc Copper and Lead. This was very hard and tedious work and often didn’t produce as much.

Outlaws - Individuals who had usually been convicted of crime or operated in ways that go against the law. Most of if not all outlaws were fugitives (on the run/ hiding from law enforcement).

The Johnsons are an African American family who are looking for a new start, they are on the verge of completing their property which John and Mariam have used most of their earnings (John worked on a farm and Mariam worked as a cook). They plan to develop their own farm but the areas they are in has poor soil  as it is one of the driest parts of the west however that was the best that was offered to them . They have to deal with uncertainty, racism and discrimination almost everywhere they go (threats to their safety). Mariam is very close to giving birth to her second child and is already worried about the safety of delivery and who may be delivering her child .

They must decide on how they cannot only protect but also provide for the family.

Children - Simbi is a seven year old girl. Has no friends and no siblings (yet) meaning that there is no one for him to play with. Now she is moving to the West her parents are extremely worried about her safety and have been very strict on not letting her be anywhere without them. Her parents also don’t have enough money to buy toys for her to play and learn with.

However they still want her to aspire to be greater and be proud despite the racial bias and challenges she has / may face.

They must find something that she could not only play with but also something she could feel empowered by.

Woman - Mariam is Heavily pregnant, she is very anxious as she knows that she will not be able to deliver a baby but herself. She had heard of a woman who has assisted many births. However the woman is also African American meaning that her tools used are makeshift as she has limited access to proper equipment as it is difficult , they are also worn out and unsanitary. This could lead to a very dangerous delivery

How Can Mariam prevent an unsafe delivery?

POC - John is the man of the family.His main priority is to provide for the family. John worked as a slave but then was granted freedom. He then earned a living by working on a farm but John had no choice but to leave. John has faced many hard ships from racial bias and abuse and discrimination. He had been turned away from many jobs and ridiculed based on his skin. He has the skills to farm how can he use this to make a living ?

The second font I feel isn't exciting or very bold.

Even though the 3rd font looks more interesting and standout from the ring its distracting and definitely looks better on is own

the name of this particular kit is Sherif Bessie as the kit is based the fictional character

I also think that my time manage meant could have been a little better as it would have slowed me to explore more than on process or design idea regarding to the items in my box. even though I like how the leaflet/story came out I would have petered to actually print on the paper rather than hand writing directly as felt that it would have looked more refined as some thing in the Wild West were stamped. also the printing of the logo on the box. I did try to draw and paint it directly but found this to be quite difficult and tedious as there are a lot of details. this resulted in my not having the branding on the box.

how ever I am glad that I was able to create a box that looks and feels cohesive and that I was able to use resourses that I had "made a mistake' on for something else instead of it going to waste.

Then using a thick bruised paint brush I lightly brushed the page to create a more weathered down look.

I then used a sponge to add a dark rim around the piece.
