In Hernandez V. Texas (1954), Peter Hernandez was convicted of the murder of Joe Espinosa to which his legal team appealed arguing that he was being discriminated against because there were no Mexicans in the jury that convicted him. This appeal made its way to the Supreme Court who unanimously ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment applied to all racial and ethnic groups facing discrimination, effectively broadening civil rights laws to include Hispanics and all other nonwhites. This was the first and only Mexican-American civil rights case heard in the United States Supreme Court.
