- Human knowledge is based upon human conjectures.
- Supports the idea of subjective truth.
- Knowledge is entirely dependent on context, and on the role of the researcher (with all his/her baggage of culture, norms and values).

Findings are evaluated based on pre-existing knowledge and critique.

Example:
In different fields of study they hold different standards and methods for coming to certain outcomes. This means that from a post-positivism point of view it might mean that a researcher from a scientific field won’t take research from social studies as serious because the methods they use are different, and in their opinion not as solid, as in the scientific world.

Rules for qualitative research
- Pay attention to abstraction and classification.
- Practice retroduction but accept its always fallible.
- Go back and forth between theory and the empirical patterns by the data.
- Choose appropriate techniques for the task in hand.
- Be wary of predictions.
- Use deduction but know its’ limitations.
- Recognize that the need for parsimony depends on what you are doing.
- Recognize that data in open system are ‘ficts’ (not mirror-like representations of reality).
- Do not expect textbooks to provide a cookbook recipe for your study.
- Be sensitive to context.
- Apply criteria of judgement in evaluating a theory.
