<title>What is Leadership? Leadership is not what leaders do, but a way of being. Justice vs. compassion / Masculine vs. feminine. Bureaucracy = Management rational efficiently run bureaucracy leads to an efficiently run system. Management is essential. Deals with hierarchy. Positional authority Instructional Compliance Foresight, ethics Community = Leadership relational Purpose driven - goals that are felt rather than measured (not SMART goals)Deals with networks Earned influence Inspirational Commitment Foresight, ethics What Do Professional Teachers Learn? What is teaching? Providing Instruction Providing Guidance Developing Capacities Developing Relationships Need to have a shared conception of teaching What do professional teachers learn? What’s so “deep” about “adaptive” learning? Knowledge Skills Concepts (mental models) Assumptions, beliefs (subconscious) world views Prepare for the Implementation Dip The frustration, the fatigue, the loss A good leader plans for these How Do Leaders Encourage and Support That Learning? Professional Learning Communities Professional: ethics, morality, constantly striving to better yourself Professional Autonomy Community: a group of individuals whose relationships go deeper than their masks of composure. <title>Celebrating and Supporting Diversity - Bruce Beairsto Acknowledge the truth - strained relationships between teachers and admin Why is it that people of goodwill and good intentions find themselves involved in discussions that are not productive? What is it that makes simple conversations so tough?Anchors/Emotional responses/Bias/Experiential intelligence- need to develop reflective intelligence Conversations take time - listen to understand not to respond Dialogue - a relatively new idea A stream of 2 ideas that is non judgemental to create understanding Unique form of conversation Communication is in the listening Begins with your own intention as a thought Intention comes out imperfect Someone else receives it and applies their own filter They respond with their own perceptions Google cselp SFU - https://www.sfu.ca/education/cselp.html current events Toolkit Public education discourse</title>

<title>Strategies for Helping Children Manage Anxiety Anxiety BC website: anxietybc.com Anybody can have anxiety or mental health issues. What is anxiety? Adaptive survival mechanism everyone has. Necessary for survival - that internal mechanism that keeps us safeFight, flight, or freezeVague unknown, future threatWhat happens when we’re anxious? Thoughts: assume that the worse is going to happen. Body reactions to keep us safe: heart beats faster, muscles tense, drop in blood flow to the brain, want to pee yourself. Body is getting preparedBehaviours: fight, flight, freeze. Like an internal alarm system. Potential problems: Goes off in the absence of danger (sensitive smoke alarm). Great for physical or immediate threats. NOT for modern or continuous “threats”. Anxiety is on a continuum: Everyone has anxiety. Where do you fall on the continuum? Is it a problem? Frequent Intense Distressing Interferes Types of anxieties: Specific Phobias - fear of things or situations beyond the scope of average. Separation Anxiety - fear of being away from an attachment figure (mom, dad). Social Anxiety - anxious or nervous of what others will think of them or react to them. Safety behaviours: ie. - doing things to avoid social anxiety. not speaking if fear of being made fun of. Generalized anxiety - the fear of the unknown: excessive worry and anxiety about daily things. Getting to school on time, forgetting to get picked up, tests, etc.Panic Attacks - intense rush of fear or discomfort. Panic Disorder: out of the blue or in situations when you would expect them. Fear of your own fear response. What to do: act like it’s not a big deal. Keep your own cool. Use grounding strategies - I know this is hard, but I’m going to help you through it. Look around and tell me what you see. Touch some things and tell me what you feel. What do you hear?Agoraphobia - fear of being in places where anxious situations may occur - ie: classrooms, etc.Obsessive Compulsive and Related Problems:Obsessive - Intrusive thoughts Compulsions - doing something over and over again to avoid an obsessive thought. Trauma and Stress Related Problems: Intrusive thoughts about a traumatic event Not having a storage system for that event and then having the memories coming out. Reexperiencing, revisiting, arousal is normal, but not. Anxiety - the facts: Anxiety is the most commonly diagnosed mental health condition for children, youth, and adults. Approximately 6-20% of youth High rate of comorbidity (other anxiety disorders, LD, depression) Untreated anxiety problems in childhood and adolescence leads to other problems in adulthood. Life is about accepting reasonable risks Strategies: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Thoughts, behaviours, physiology, emotions are all interconnected.By changing those, we can change how we feel. Anxiety 101: Teach these things. Normalize anxiety and adaptive. Emotions aren’t bad. Lots of things we can do to manage our anxiety. Self-Talk: Self talk / automatic thoughts. Interpretations / not facts. Anxiety = worst case scenario. Do NOT believe everything you think. Avoid “thinking pitfalls”Keep it truthful and helpful. What am I afraid is going to happen? Help students identify the thoughts. What am I afraid is going to happen? What was I thinking when I started feeling this way? Power of Self-Talk Healthy thinking</title>
