Age of Reason and Age of Revolution

Topic: Historical Figure Analysis

Reflection: I did okay on this assignment. I learned about different people who had different important ideas about how the world could be better with the government being different and in other ways. I am proud of who I chose as who I thought had the most democratic ideas but not much else. I think I could've thought a little bit more about who I chose and I could've done a little more research.

Connection: Human right #19 The Freedom of Expression was both granted and denied because some enlightenment thinkers were sent to jail and the church was annoyed with what they said but technically, they were allowed to say it and no one was killed for saying it.

Application to present day: Some people today feel like they can't say something if it may go against the church but that only happens to people to believe in the church and God.

Gilded Age and World War 1

Topic: World War One
-M A I N reasons for WW1

Reflection:
I think this was my favorite unit, I thought the content was very interesting. The work below is from the popplet presentation / the M A I N project. I thought that my group was good, except one of the members did not complete the work needed for this project. Although this makes me mad because I did my work so how come this person could not do theirs? I am proud of the work I put forward and I am glad I got the chance to learn about ww1 because it is an important part of our history.

Connection:
World War One connects to human right #9- no unfair detainment. During ww1 many people were captured as prisoners of war, this takes away human right number 9 because they were being held against their will. People were subjected to cruelty and unfair treatment. Human right number nine protects you against being put in jail or captured for no reason.
Application to present day:
Human right nine connects to present day because of human trafficking. In health class we learned about human trafficking and how it still exists. People are being detained and are raped, abused, forced into labor and taken advantage of against their will which is STILL denying a human right which was denied in World War One.

E - EXPANDING

World War II, New Nations, and the Cold War

Topic: Cold War

Two Voice Poem

Reflection:
I overall liked the units under the E- expanding but being completely real with you these units were depressing. I remember that some of the videos we watched made the whole class speechless, what went on during this time period was brutal. I am glad we got to learn about it though because now I know what happened and why it did so I can help to prevent another disaster such as WW2 and the cold war from happening again. The content provided in this work sample is decent, I definitely think I could have done better but once again I am proud of my work.
Connection:
This era connects to human right number 15, the right to seek a safe place to live. This right is connected to my work sample and The Cold War because after WW2 Berlin was split into the east and the west. One side was controlled by the communist Russia and the other was controlled by anti communist USA. People were not allowed to move sides of the wall (west to east) and had to live in harsh conditions. The Right to seek a safe place to live states "If we are frightened of being badly treated in our own country we have the right to move." People on the west of the wall were frightened of the Communist government and wanted to move, but this was prohibited.
Application to present day:
I think that this connects to present day because people are still being denied the right to seek a safe place to live. An example is the Syrian Refugees. Many people are needing to flee Syria because of war, which is causing them to become refugees and they are trying to move to other countries to restart their lives in a safe area. But they are being denied entry to countries and many are being turned away.

Conclusion

At the beginning of the year, I believed "JUST" to mean
what is just~
1

An ideal or just community would be where everyone abides by the human rights. Also in a just community everyone should get what they personally need to live comfortably.

Now at the end of the year, my thinking has slightly changed. Now I believe "JUST" to mean that societies as a whole are getting what they need to maintain prosperity. You cannot give every person in the world a good life, or guarantee that all people will die of old age or natural reasons, or that nobody would suffer, that would not be just. But you can find ways to make a community just. Around the world people can make sure their communities have the basic necessities, access to shelter, food, water, etc... you can be kind most of the time, it is your own responsibility to keep your community just. So my new definition of ¨Just¨ is that YOU are doing your part to be mostly kind, generous, unselfish, patient, etc... so this same behavior can be reflected on society.
