1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature in order to gain a deeper understanding of the minds with unique experiences. Such as in The Things They Carried, we are able to dive into the mind of Tim O'Brien, and experience the thoughts of a young soldier being drafts to the war, and the decisions he has to make leading up to the war.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We are impacted by texts because they help us gain an understanding of different experiences that not everyone goes through.

3. How does the structure and style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The structure and style affect its meaning because of the way that O'Brien creates the extended metaphor of the "weight" that they are carrying, both mental and physical.

How did you do during the Harkness discussions?
As it was the beginning of the year, I struggled with the harknesses. I did a good job identifying authorial choices but struggled to connect them to specific global issues. The whole idea of global issue were new to me at the time.

Looking back at this year of IB as a whole I was able to steer away from the structure of Say Mean Matter and shifted towards the idea of integrating evidence and weaving quotes. Using this I was able to successfully explore many global issues.

The structure of her text affects the meaning since the way she writes in non-linear. This means that she is able to jump between ideas without disrupting the "plot" of the story.

Time and Space

How important is a cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.

It is extremely important for both historical and cultural context when reading and writing works like this, because it is important to ones understanding and in order for the articulation of ideas to be accurate and factual, they must be educated on the topic.

4helplessly into the stove. This is worse. Then it was for her-

5self. Now she is crying because she has no self. Death is a

6skipped meal compared to this. She can feel her thickness

7thinning, dissolving into nothing. She grabs the hair at her

8temples to get enough to uproot it and halt the melting for

9a while. Teeth clamped shut, Denver brakes her sobs. She

10doesn’t move to open the door because there is no world out

11there. She decides to stay in the cold house and let the dark

12swallow her like the minnows of light above. She won’t put

13up with another leaving, another trick. Waking up to find one

14brother then another not at the bottom of the bed, his foot -

30between her fingers and holds on. A good thing she does be

31cause suddenly Beloved sits up.

32“What is it?” asks Denver.

33“Look,” she points to the sunlit cracks.

34 “What? I don’t see nothing.” Denver follows the pointing

35finger.

36Beloved drops her hand. “I’m like this.”

37Denver watches as Beloved bends over, curls up and rocks.

38Her eyes go to no place; her moaning is so small Denver can

39hardly hear it.

40“You all right? Beloved?”

41Beloved focuses her eyes. “Over there. Her face.”

42Denver looks where Beloved’s eyes go; there is nothing but

43darkness there.

What were some global issues you explored in Beloved? Consider memory, trauma, importance of community, etc. The more detailed you are, the more useful this will be for your IO.
One of the global issues that I used in my mock IO was the way that slavery impacts interfamily relationships. Other issues discussed in the book were the affects of slavery on manhood, and even touched on the collective unconscious.

Beloved can connected to other works we have read, because during our unit on Langston Hughes, the undermining message of all of his works was tied to the oppression and mistreatment.

Beloved can connect to our world today, because although there is not the same form of chattel slavery in the United States as there was 200 years ago, there is still the discrimination and oppression for black people.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?
The novel addresses the issue of gender because it addresses the importance of motherhood in a developing baby. When separated from ones mother, babies become reliant on them once later reuinted. The structure gives voices to the women because Morrison's writing style lets us into the heads of all of the characters, but we can hear their voice through their thoughts and actions, rather than their words.

Duffy uses metaphors in the poem to establish what she wants in a relationship, such as the way that she hopes for longevity with their partner. Duffy adds that the onion “promises light” which creates a metaphor for the comparison for the onion bringing a future. This provides for the idea that the narrator wants a long lasting relationship with his significant other. After reading and analyzing the poem, we had decided the best way to get this idea of the poem across to the audience was to incorporate a romantic, yet submissive. We wanted to use the music to stress how love is love, regardless of the ups and downs. We also wanted to dramatically read this poem in the most romantic way possible to show how love will always remain. We used a delicate text and a romantic image in each scene to set the mood and tone. The symbolism of the onion is used to show the untraditional love expressed in the poem. The speaker doesn’t give her a kissogram or card but instead gives her something that truly represents their love and their relationship. The author uses the layers of this onion to show each part of it as the platinum loop is used as a wedding ring to show how they can be married, but also it could mean that it doesn’t really matter to him if they get married because of the use of “if you want”.The author also uses similes within the poem such as “It will blind you with tears like a lover.” Cutting an onion can make people cry as well as your lover can, showing how it is necessary to use an onion in your ‘dishes’, to make the end product the best as possible, even though there are many ups and downs that can make you emotional. The use of the commands such as “here” and “take it” is on its own line to try and emphasize the love that he has for her.

Duffy creates many different themes throughout her poems, but one of the most prominent is the unfair treatment to other groups of people. For instance, Selling Manhattan delves into the unfair treatment of Native Americans, whereas Shooting Stars looks at the unfair treatment of Jewish people and other minorities during the Holocaust.

If I chose to use 1984 for a future paper, I would look at the themes of societal expectations and rebelling against a corrupt government.

I could connect this to the book Chronicle of a Death Foretold, as the Vicario Brothers did not want to murder Santiago. They were conflicted with the murder the entire book, just because they were unsure if they should align with their morals, or if they should murder him to uphold their families honor.

It also connects with Persepolis. Marji is forced to conform with societies rules for her entire life, and rebels by buying westernized goods, just how Winston rebels from the government.

One thing that I enjoyed about this unit was Murakami's style of writing. The writing was always unique and magical. His stories were never clear and always were left up to the readers interpretation. No, I do not find myself writing about the short stories because I felt that there lacked common ideas between the stories so I feel like it would be difficult to use for one prompt.

One book that could connect to Murakami's style could be Hamlet, because both stories had constant glimses of magical realism throughout the texts.
