The author used the air as word which is giving human qualities "the (air) was soft and sweet".

Significance
Here Stephen king creates a calm soothing atmosphere as the man who loves flowers presents soft and sweet. In fact, when an author tries to use strong words, these words represent spoken reality. Besides appearance of two characters also adds to a sexual charge of atmosphere

"A cigarette jittered between his fingers" page 454

Personification is giving human characteristics to something that is non human. "Jitter", a noun which is typically used to describe nervous and anxious humans was used in this story to describe an inanimate object. Stephan King repeatedly does this in story to create images in your head. This is significant because it contributes to imagery. Imagery helps us connect with stories better and helps to set the mood. Personally while reading the quote I chose, I could vividly picture a cigarette in this mans hand however if he said something less personified, it would be harder and the image in your head would be less clear.
-Emily

Also " and in the city, summer is the season of dreams" king refers a very peaceful atmosphere because everyone knows and dreams that summer is the perfect season which can influence a person's mood.
