In fact, comunication is the key to build the trust of the parents about my work. If we really care and are able to show the benefit of their participation at the students life, the way is open and a path to follow, but there are allways difficult situations. In the video, I was surprised about the strategy of the teacher meet the parents outside the school and I couldnot quite agree with that!

It is a big deal to make them trust you without any language in common. Fortunately, there are many NGOs in the camp that provide me with interpreters or cultural intermediators but the problem sometimes remain! Those professionals maybe use a different vocabulary or don't express things in the same mien. Appart from the language barriers, there is a cultural issue. The customs are different and maybe you can be misunderstood. You have to use body language, you have to look them in the eyes to make the communication effective.

In all situations I sought to establish a genuine relationship of mutual trust, both with students and with parents, in order to improve the school performance of young people in the medium term and their educational success in the long term. Often, informal meetings and / or personal meetings took place, where the language and vocabulary I used was adequate. From these meetings and / or meetings I tried to define with the parents strategies of joint action, in order to overcome the difficulties felt by them and their children. For this joint action plan a bilateral monitoring was also defined, to be carried out by the parents and me.

Here I tried to minimize the problem of the class and to focus only the problems of the student, helping the student to overcome his family situation.
Gypsy ethnicity - parents had difficulty understanding certain school rules and sometimes they reacted poorly to some decisions ... Here, I tried to talk with parents, clarifying the rules of the school and also I tried to make them understand the real problems of their son. I also tried to talk to them calmly and clearly.
Emigrant parents - Student left to the responsibility of the grandmother. in this case the grandmother went to school whenever necessary. The pupils played the role of the translators when the teachers (included myself) contacted with parents.
During the school terms 2001-2002 I was at a school, where a local dialect was spoken both by pupils and parents. Both pupils and parents undrestood perfectly what I said but I had difficulties in undrestanding them, despite the fact that all fo us spoke the same language (Greek). Now I undrestand this local dialect much better than I used to.
The past 3-4 school terms I have Roma pupils. I have difficulties in the communication with some parents (not all of them). These parents showed up in the school very rarely. I do not know whether is the language or their different background the reason for their absence from school life.

As you know here in Greece we are dealing with an economical crisis. Lately many parents are facing economic problems, many of them are unemployed and they can't offer their children what they want to. They don't have the patience to sit with their children, read the lessons with them, talk about school or talk about school problems. They don't show up in meetings with the teachers although we call them again and again. It's a very sad situation and there is nothing we can do. They are feeling hopeless and teachers feel like there is nothing we can do about it. There is a saying here in Greece: "A hungry bear never dances", I hope you understand what it means.Without proper conditions and right socio-economic solutions there is no way to overcome this situation, which infects their childrens lives.

At the moment, I have no communication problems, neither linguistic nor cultural. But this is not to say that they can not come up during the school year.
My school receives a lot of students of gypsy ethnicity and of countries of the east.
With regard to students coming from other countries we try to overcome the linguistic difficulty, through the students, but also through other people who have been here for some time. Sometimes they bring someone who understands our language when they come to school.
Regarding cultural differences, in the case of gypsy students, the school found a cultural mediator. In this case he is a former student of the school who facilitates the communication and adaptation of all, students, parents and teachers themselves.
We are also careful to carry out intercultural activities.
I think the important thing is to be interested and genuine, if both we and the parents believe that this is the path to knowledge and healthy development, everything becomes easier. We have to be available, open to trial.

Almost every year, we have a number of children who arrive every September and they speak a different language.

At the beginning these children often are unable to communicate verbally, especially if no one speaks their language. I try to use a lot of visual resources, props for storytelling and so on, and I address to them, using very simple language (short sentences), as well as body language (e.g. showing things, using pantomime). These children do pick up the language very quickly and by July most of them are able to communicate with me and their peers.

I try to include in the organized activities cultural events, customs presentations and so on. The lovely thing about teaching this age is that children are still very open to differences in nationality and cultures and so they are very accepting to all.

I try to communicate with the parents (with the help of someone who can speak their language) and sometimes, when invited, I do home visits, or participate in meetings with the parents out of school, which really help to give me an insight into where children are coming from.

Those parents had a very low level of education and it was very hard for them to understand that they play an important role in the educational future of their child, so they didn't involve to seriously in the educational process because of not having enough time. But, beside that, they really wanted their children to push their limits, to learn more than they did, in order to overcome their struggles. They wanted their kids to learn and become well educated adults because like that they could improve their lifestyle. Even it was challenging for them (because of the distance and the meteorological conditions) , they tried their best to bring at school their children, trusting that teachers will change their children's future in a positive way.

Nevertheless, I think we ought to use our own personal and professional abilities to overcome this problem. I usually use a simple speech and simple words and explain again and again, to allow them understanding what I am saying. It turns easier when facing one person or two, but it gets difficult if talking to a big audience, since you are not able to figure out if everyone is really knowing what you are talking about.

My main problem is how to communicate with rude parents (and I have a lot this kind!).

In my experience as a foreign Portuguese teacher I constantly have to deal with parents with different socio-economic/cultural/language backgrounds. Usually my parents arrived Portugal and the language is their main problem, because most of them don’t speak Portuguese. Many of them arrived with their families running away from war or political/religious pursuits. So, in these cases I contact with the “Centro Nacional de Apoio à Integração de Migrantes (CNAIM)” - The National Immigrant Support Centres (CNAI) that were created in order to give response to some difficulties felt by the immigrants in their process of integration in Portugal. This organism has, in the same space, different services, institutions and Cabinets of Support to the Immigrant. This allows me and the parents to communicate in order to solve their socio-economic/cultural/language problems they may have. As I refer to in module 2 – 2.1., this organism has created the Telephone Translation Service (STT) to overcome the language barrier, one of the great difficulties experienced by immigrants in their relationship with the services in Portugal.

They have to approach parents calmly, objectively, and ensure parents that school act for the well being of their children.

I agree with most of what has been said previously and there are always problems arising as we must deal with all sorts of people and many parents at a time.
Of course there are different kinds of parents, like no person is equal to another. So, you must have the skill to reach them all if you want cooperative parents. Someone above referred to being tough at times. It can work with parents with whom you've tried every approach possible. However, due to their job specificity, experienced teachers are kind of experts in communication and they always find a way of opening the communication channel and getting the message through. It's just a question of patience. I have already dealt with difficult situations interacting with parents from different social-economic backgrounds, both high and low, and have always reached agreement.
Most problematic is when parents give up on their children's education and ask the teacher to do something because they are unable to deal with the tough behavior of their child. They are difficult to convince that it's their responsibility as well as the school's and the school can do nothing because the authority over the child is mostly theirs.

The ability to adapt to one's interlocutor is crucial to any form of communication, and concerning parent-teacher engagement it is heightened. So teachers must be well aware of the need to use a simple, straightforward and assertive type of language. And this is true not only when you are dealing with people from different backgrounds (cultural, linguistic, socio-economic) but also with parents you assume are similar to oneself. To have a proficuous communication trust must be strenghtend and that, as mentioned in the video, can spring from natural curiosity expressed by the teacher towards the pupil's world. From my experience with parents the key to achieve that trust, needed for true engagement, is showing care and attention.

I always thought it was my categorical duty to have positive relationships with all the families because of this, a serene life for the pupils emerges. It certainly does not always succeed easily! One case was very impressed because it was a fight lasting almost five years. After three years of being overlooked, his son needed a logopedic evaluation, one day the dad at the exit of the school intimidates me and threatens me. I ask for help, co-workers intervene, and I am forced to report this to my manager. A meeting with the director is organized with the whole teaching team and parents. After heated discussions I can pass the information that my intention is just to help the child. We plan a customized teaching plan and the family begins to visit the child. A serious picture has come out. We started working together and now that the five year period has ended we greeted with cordiality and esteem and the dad admitted to having lost so much time because of his difficulty listening to me. he was crying.

I have worked in a school that had different cultural and economic differences: children of military men and children in a degraded social neighborhood. It was not easy. Parents' meetings had to be held in order to get to know each other better and sometimes to have meetings with parents individually. Even the school organized a traditional dance in which it was difficult to mix the students. At last it was verified that the children of the neighborhood had better rhythm and danced better. Such valued this poor social group, since they became preferred to form dance pair. ( Google tradutor :)

I have been working abroad for the last 4 years. My target group was the descendants of the emigrants. My students were the second or even third generation of emigrants. They are distant from their native culture, in best cases they speak dialects of the Serbian language, but a rather modest fund of words, and only 10% of parents were in highly educated. In many families, the mother tongue was not spoken, so the students were initially prevented from effectively attending regular classes. It was extremely difficult for four years, but in which I learned a lot.

I have experienced such situations, in the past, also recent. I try to clarify, using a clear language, searching for mutual goals, developing patiance and tolerance, not blaming or making statements. Finding common ground. Make things interesting and accesible so that we can grow together, no matter what are own backgrounds. No one should feel inferior or superior, but empower to progress.
