Rigor looks like intense discussion about the material presented in class, with students researching events referenced and alluded to and then creating their own thoughts about it, whether they express it verbally or an analysis. For example, the novel the Alchemist mentioned the Moors. We researched the Moors, how they looked, and where they lived. Then asked students why would the author use Moorish eyes to describe a character instead of just "beautiful eyes".

Emily Busch:

Instrumental music functions like a team sport. In sports an individual cannot win or lose a game - the whole team wins or the whole team loses. In Band and orchestra, all students need to achieve certain benchmarks or they will affect the whole group’s performance. All students must:
Play with proper posture
Play with good tone quality
Play correct notes
Play correct rhythms
Play correct articulations

Only then can we move to the next level.
