-They is always in front of the orchestra.
-The violins are always divided into at least two groups.
-The 1st violins play higher notes than the 2nd violins.
- Violins, violas, cellos and double basses all produce the sounds in exactly the same way.
- They are made up of four strings, gut, metal or nylon.
- The bow is a wooden stick with more than 200 strands of horse hair.
- The horse hair is stretched tightly along the bow.
- The pitch of a note sounded by a stretched string depends upon the length, thickness, and tension of the string.
- The player can make different notes by shortening the strings, by pressing them down to the finger board with the fingers of his left hand.
- They can also be plucked
( Pizzicato)
- The harp is counted as a strings instrument, but the way it's played is different from the strings section.
- The harp is always plucked. It has 47 strings and 7 pedals one for each notes of the scale!!!!:)

-the sounds are made by causing a column of air to vibrate inside the hollow tube
-along the length of each instrument there is a series of holes, controlled by a system of keys, springs and levers
- except the flute and piccolo, each of these instruments has either a single or a double reed.
-the flute and piccolo are held horizontally rather than striaght in front of the player
-the sounds of a strings section blend together, whereas those of the woodwind are more distinctive and individual, tending to contrast than blend
There are two main types of woodwind instruments:
-flutes and reed instruments.
EG; of woodwind instrument
-double bassoon
-bassoon
-oboe
-cor anglais
-clarinet
-bass clarinet
-piccolo
-flute
-By opening and closing the holes, the player alters the length of the vibration column of air :
-the shorter the air column, the higher the nte
-the longer the air column, the lower the notes
-clarinets has a single reed while teh others has a double reed

Percussion

-Percussion instruments are considered the heartbeat of an orchestra.
-The percussion family is spilt into 2 groups , the pitched and the unpitched instruments .
-Without percussion, it is harder to play in rhythm.
-Percussion instruments include any instruments that make sound when they are hit, shaken or scraped
-pitched instruments are those instruments ehich can play 1 or more notes of definite pitch
-unpitched instruments are those which make sounds of indefinite pitch
-examples of pitched percussion instruments are cymbals, castanets, snare drum, glockenspiel, xylophone, celesta , ,tubular bells , timpani .
-examples of unpitched percussion instruments are the whip , woodblock ,tamtam, triangle , bass drum , cymbals , castanets , tambourine
- Only on rare occasions will all these instruments be heard in the same piece. In the 17 to 19 century only make use of kettle drums . but many 19 to 20 century composers delight in exploring varied and colorful sounds drawn from a large percussion section .
- Percussive techniques can also be applied to the human body, as in body percussion.
-Percussion instruments keep the rhythm , make special sounds and add excitement and color
- because of the diversity of percussive instruments, it is not uncommon to find large musical ensembles composed entirely of percussion. Rhythm, melody, and harmony are all represented in these ensembles.
- percussion instruments can be unconventional , refered to as custom percussion ,
eg : brooms , pots , cans , garbage cans , metal pipes etc...
-A such example of found percussion is the use of a cannon in a piece
