Today, was the first day of production planning and our first team meeting for our final major project (Glow Up Competition) as explained in my context post. This day, we were given our brief (brief- A set of instructions given to a person about a job or task). This brief would include the requirements we will have to meet in order to have a successful outcome of this project. I will have to make sure that i fully understand what the brief is asking of me so I will know what directions to take and how to approach each step I take leading up and on the competition day. This is important when coming into a new project because in order to have a successful outcome I will have to understand everything required in order to complete what it will be asking of me. Today, will also include our first step into the project which will determine which direction we approach this project regarding makeup and characters, choosing a theme. Choosing a theme will be a very important task for this project, this is because it will be a team effort it will be a team effort as everyone will be competing in this competition and will need to be happy and have the skill level to do a character based on the theme. If someone on the makeup team would come out to not like or feel comfortable with the theme, this would mean we would have to either come up with a new theme or adjust it to be able to make sure everyone is happy.

Brief:

The first step today, was to be given our brief which we would need to make sure we all understood the requirements that we are being asked of. I wanted to approach this brief with a positive mindset in order to have a strong understanding and know what I would need to do in order to come out of this project happy and proud of my outcome. To make sure me and the makeup team would be able to understand the brief confidently, our tutor gave us a task to do involving the brief. This task was giving us all a list of questions in pairs, the answers to the questions were in the brief where we would have to look through the brief thoroughly to answer the questions and complete this task successfully. On the sheet of questions, the type of questions featured were on different parts of the brief so we would have to look all through the brief which would give us a strong understanding on what is required. An example of the questions on the brief is, 'How many weeks is this project?', with the answer being 10 which involves the 10th week being for evaluating the makeup completed and the process prior to the competition. Because we worked in pairs, I found this an easier way to answer the questions given as this was an element of team work involved which meant we could make sure both of us had a strong understanding of what the brief was meaning. For example, if one of us didn't understand the answer to the question we found, we didn't move on to the next question until we both understood and helped each other to understand. By doing this, this demonstrated strong team work because we were helping each other to understand what the brief was telling us. Once everyone had completed the task, we all came together to share what we had learned about the brief. By doing this, if someone didn't understand a part of the brief we would be able to help each other to understand which would also demonstrate strong team work. I found this task beneficial to being able to have a strong understanding of what I need to do in order to have a successful outcome. From this task, I was able to take away an understanding of how important it is to have to understand a brief for a project to ensure a strong start to the project. I am now feeling confident for this project and ready to face any challenges that I may encounter.

Theme Choosing (Team Collaboration):

In order to chose a theme for the competition, in the brief it said as a makeup team it was down to us to decide on that theme. To do this, my tutor had put some theme ideas on a board to give us some help with deciding what to chose, I found this helpful because we were able to have some base ideas already provided for us which meant we could broaden the ideas provided with our own making the decision easier. We each went up one by one to chose the idea we liked most. When I went up to chose, i chose the theme of ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’. 'Grimms' Fairy Tales, originally known as the Children's and Household Tales, is a German collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, first published on 20 December 1812.' decided to chose this theme as I would be able to incorporate two styles of makeup which i enjoy and am confident with to do which is glam makeup and special effects which would in able me to have ideas and confidence through out the process and for the competition. Once everyone had chosen this theme, in pairs we put our themes together to come up with an overall theme/title for our competition. With me choosing ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ (Grimms Fairy Tales is a German collection of the well loved fairytales for example, Cinderella, with a gory twisted element to the story created by Brothers Grimm) and the makeup artist I paired with choosing ‘ Step Back in Time’, we came to a decision of ‘Once Upon a Time’, by doing this we demonstrated strong team work and showing communication skills as we had to communicate in order to come up with this title. Our themes fit perfectly together making our theme/title name an easy decision and well thought out decision. Once we had all picked a theme/title as a makeup team, we came together to share our ideas so everyone would be able to make a decision on which theme we would prefer and like to be the theme for our competition, this showed team work and collaboration to make the final decision. When our ideas had all been shared, we all voted on which theme we liked the most and were all happy to go ahead with. I was very pleased as mine and the makeup artist I was working with idea got chosen to be the theme of the competition. As we started to come up with ideas of characters/makeup we would like to do, we came to the conclusion of changing the theme to ‘Fantasy’ as this would give everyone a wider range of ideas that they could chose for their makeup also, people were liking the ideas of other characters which were not a fairytale meaning the characters wouldn't match the theme. We came to the decision of a working title name (working title~ at idea of a possible title) of ‘In a Land Far Far Away’. This theme says to me that any character that may not exist in this present land such as mermaids or fairy's. Once we had came to a final decision, I had started choosing some ideas of what i may possibly do for the makeup for the competition. My idea that I would like to go ahead with completing for the competition is Ariel from The Little Mermaid but with a gory twist. With this idea, I will have to make sure to do some research of this story and see where I would include the gory twist. For my research I will try and find some scripts to see how Ariel is described, the book, and if there is any background information on Ariel which I may be able to include in the makeup I will complete. I will also make sure to watch the movie to get a broader idea of Ariel as a character. Before I start designing the makeup, I will have to research on Ariels age as this will matter as to how I do the makeup for example, if Ariel is described as young and beautiful, I will have to show this through the makeup.

Time Line (Team Collaboration):

In this brief I needed to create a time line of my own and help to create a team one, creating a timeline will come to help me and the makeup team by having noted what we will need to complete by what date and what to expect in the upcoming week which will help with organization skills and time management. To do this, we looked through our brief and looked at would would happen between weeks as it tells us in there. We were given sheets which had titles of for example, week 1, on there where I wrote down what I would need to do this week to do this I had to look through the brief, which helped me to have an even stronger understanding of the brief which will help for the future of this project. By doing this activity, I was able to have an even more of an understanding on what was required in the brief. Once I had finished that, we came together as a group to see what we should aim to have completed each week. For example, in our team time line we included team meetings to share and possibly help with ideas. By doing this, we all demonstrated team work and collaboration as well as communication skills. This also helped us to be able to go back and add things in that we may have missed off.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for today, I was able to be set off on a positive start for my final major project. I am excited for the road ahead of me to complete this project. I am pleased I am able to do what I would like and enjoy to do under this theme. From today, I was able to take away how important team collaboration is as a makeup team in order to come out a project of a positive note which will prepare us for our futures as makeup artists if we make it onto a professional makeup team.

Today, we had our first team meeting regarding our Glow Up Competition. This day and team meeting consist of finalizing the theme to make sure everyone was happy with it which is important because everyone will need to be happy and feeling confident with the theme to ensure everyone will have an idea and be able to complete a character in this theme. The theme will also have to be made sure that it will be able to fit everyone's skill level and peoples strengths and weaknesses as everyone on the makeup team is different. We will then go on to talking about model care. What is model care? Model care is everything to do with making sure the model feels conformable in the environment they are in, ensuring their safety and well-being while in the makeup chair, this is all the makeup artists responsibility. This is an important discussion to have as a makeup team as for this competition, we will have to bring in our own models. While our own models are our responsibility as a makeup team we will have to make sure everyone's models feel comfortable so talking about this subject will make everyone to understand how important model care is and what we will need to do.

Team meeting:

Theme deciding:

For our team meeting, we started by agreeing on our theme we had all chosen together the week prior. Our chosen theme of ‘In a Land Far Far Away’, was agreed on by everyone on the makeup team which meant this was a team effort which demonstrated team collaboration which was important to do as this is a requirement on the brief. Before officially settling for this theme, we had to make sure everyone on the makeup team was happy with it and would meet everyone’s skill level this is important to make sure off as everyone will be competition in the competition and will need to confidently design and complete a makeup they are proud of. I was very happy that the theme was officially decided on as I already had an idea of what I would like to do and fit what I enjoy doing with makeup which helped to build my confidence by knowing that I will be able to show my strengths and be passionate about a makeup I will complete. At the end of this decision, I was able to take away how important it is to decide on a theme as a team to make sure everyone was happy and not just a few people on the makeup team.

Model Care Discussion:

As a makeup artist it is very important that your model is taken care of during this process. To meet this requirement, we all discussed with the people on our tables of what we could do individually or in smaller groups to help with model care or possible promotion if we decided to have the competition as an open event. this is important to do as a team as we are all responsible for this competition and will all need to put in the effort in order to make the competition successful. I thought I could do something on social media in a small group if the decision for an open event would happen, this would help to promote the competition meaning people could come and see our work and see how far we have been able to come and where all our hard work goes. This could also make the opportunity for people wanting to join the course next year have a further loo into what they will be able to do and what we do on the course. I also thought of getting bottles of water for the models as they would be sat down a long while and would need some breaks, food and drinks to keep them going throughout the long process. Everyone on the table I was on said they liked the ideas and I thought that would show team collaboration. Once we had all discussed on our tables our ideas we all came together again to discuss what we had come up with and how it would all work. This was a positive thing to do as we were all able to share our ideas and also hear some we hadn't though of on our tables. We also had the opportunity to think of some as a whole makeup team which showed team collaboration. This is important to do as this would prepare us for our futures as makeup artists as model care, team collaboration and communication skills is important to do in the professional industry. These are important skills for our future as makeup artist where all them skills will be required. From this part of the team meeting, I was able to take away some ideas of what I will do to ensure my model and everyone else's models feel safe and comfortable in the makeup chair and leave with a positive experience.

Individual Work:

Character Research:

Once we had our team meeting, we all did some individual work on researching what we would like to do for the competition research is important to do before making the final decision on what you are wanting to do as you may find something you prefer in your research but also are able to find out more information that you weren't aware of before which you could go to add to your ideas when you come to designing the makeup. I had an idea already of what I would like to do and so did some others on the makeup team however some didn’t, so this task gave them the opportunity to find what they may like to do. My idea of what I would like to do for the competition is Ariel from The Little Mermaid. This character fits in with the theme and I will be able to incorporate what I like to do regarding makeup which will give me confidence when designing, practicing and doing the makeup for the competition. I have took some of the happenings from the movie and story of Ariel and put a dark twist onto them. This task gave me the opportunity to find my ideas online and see them as a visual if they have been done similar before however, I will make sure not to copy and I will make it my own to show originality. I will make sure to do further research into this and create a post on Padlet to show my research. I found this task to be beneficial as I was able to start looking into what I may want to include in the makeup giving me plenty of time to practice and time to change if i decide to do so.

Conclusion:

In conclusion from today, I was able to have a clear idea of what I would like to do for the competition. I have liked to decide early as I will have plenty of time to prepare and practice for the competition. I have been able to take away from today about how important model care is and ideas on how I will show this when I come to working on my model and be able to demonstrate all I have learned.

Today we completed a practical lesson, which was body painting. We completed this practical lesson as people on the makeup team may want to include body painting in their makeup for the competition. Body Painting:

To start off with this practical session of body painting, we started with creating flowers with water colour (face paint) as this is what we could use for body painting if we chose to include this in our final major project. We completed flowers, as this would be an easy start to get a feel for body painting for our decision.

My Opinion on Body Painting:

Coming into doing body painting, I was unsure as I am not the greatest artist when it comes to drawing/painting. However, I did really enjoy this session and found this beneficial to my learning and to help with my design I could possibly include body painting for. I enjoyed being able to be free with what I could do but also for one following an image of an actual flower. To help my decision, for the first flower I painted, I used a picture of a flower to follow off, by doing this I was able to get a feel for following a design and applying that directly to the body in a different way that I do with makeup. For the second body painting I completed, I decided I would free rein and see what I would be able to produce.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for today, I am proud with how my body painting turned out and enjoyed the session. However, I have decided that I wouldn’t like to include body in my final major project even though I was proud of what I was able to complete I am not fully confident I could produce an amazing body painting that I would be happy with and would fit in with what I have chosen.

Today I went to a makeup competition located in Newcastle called, ATH Regional Competition. Although I wasn’t competing in the competition, I was a model for a makeup artist on the makeup team who would be completing a bridal makeup on me. This competition consisted of some team collaboration and team work by modelling for each other. By going to this competition, I was able to get a feel for how I would need to be and complete makeup in a competitive and under pressure environment, even as a model.

My Experience:

My experience at this competition was a positive one. I was able to come out with an understanding of how it feels to be in a competitive environment seeing others competing against each other in order to place for their section. This experience would be able to prepare me for our Glow Up competition for our final major project. Going to this competition and being able to see different makeup artists competing, I was able to observe different styles and techniques that could inspire me for my future work. By experiencing being a model instead of the makeup artist in a professional environment, I was able to see how it felt as a clients prospective in order to help me understand what I would need to do for my model or what the way require in order to give them a positive experience in the makeup chair.

How I Showed Makeup Artist Requirements:

I was able to show makeup artist requirements though this competition even by just being a model. I was able to do this by showing punctuality arriving before my required time to be there to make sure I was well organised, had everything I needed and that I was there on time. I was able to demonstrate good time management skills by organising my time to me sure I arrived on time and was there when I was needed to be.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for today, I was able to come out with a positive experience having a feel for what it could be feel like more me as a makeup artist competing in a competition. I am glad I decided not to compete this year as I found it was very pressured with the small amount of time given to compete a full makeup look. I would like to try next year as I will be more confident by that time.

Introduction:

Today I decided I would like to practice a section of the makeup I have thought that I may include in my final product. The character I have chosen is Ariel from The Little Mermaid however, I am putting a dark twist onto her. In the movie and book, Ursula (the evil sea witch) takes Ariel’s voice in exchange for giving Ariel legs so she would be able to marry her prince. Since I am adding a dark twist onto the story, I have chosen to have Ursula turn on Ariel after their deal and Ursula will attack Ariel taking her voice away my ripping it out of her throat. I will show the attack through other elements of the makeup also. This took me around 30 minutes to complete, showing good time management skills.

Evaluation:

Work Description:

In order to achieve this makeup, I watched a YouTube tutorial to know how to do this makeup. I started by using the 3D gel which consists of three products, (A, B and C). In order to make this product the consistency it should be, I had to make sure to take an even amount of product from each pot ensuring not to double dip and to clean my spatula in between switching between the different products to make sure I wouldn’t mess up the product causing it to form, making others unable to use the product. I mixed the product together on my pallet using my spatula to work the product together to gain the needed consistency. Once the product was all mixed together, I applied some product onto my spatula and applied the product to the neck. I applied the product from just under the start of the neck down to just above the collar bone. I applied the product as a line on each side of the neck then to join them together.  I had to try work quickly with this product as it sets quickly making it harder to work with once its been applied. On the website 3rd Degree – The Makeup Armoury they said, ‘The curing time is 5 minutes. The product will adhere to the skin by itself.’ I then moved onto the bones. For the bones, I used latex and cotton pads. Stokes K , Gaines G , Purchase N. (2021) Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry.  London: Hodder Education. Page 156 Chapter 6 says, ‘ Latex is used to create special effects and 3D effects on the skin.’  Stokes K , Gaines G , Purchase N. (2021) Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry.  London: Hodder Education. Page 270 Chapter 12 says, ‘ Latex was commonly used for prosthetic pieces.’ Before I started using latex, I opened the door to allow the smell to air out of the door making fresh air enter the room, which was needed as well because a makeup artist on the team is allergic to the product. I started by pouring some latex into a bowl so I could later dip the cotton pads into the latex easily. I started by cutting the cotton pads in half to then measure against my models neck to make sure it would fit. To make sure it would fit, I cut off the edges of the cotton pad as I wanted the bone to be slightly shorter than the width of the third degree. Once I had my desired shape, I dipped the cotton pad into the latex making sure to have a full coverage on the cotton pad. I then applied it to the neck just above where the third degree began holding it into place while I dried the cotton pad and latex with a hair dryer to make sure the piece wouldn’t move while I dried it and while I finished the makeup. I then repeated this process but applying the second piece slightly above the first. For the final bone, I repeated the same process however I used the edges of the cotton pad to resemble a broken bone. I did this to create the effect of Ursula ripping out Ariels voice. Once I had finished the bones I moved onto the colour. For the first colour I used red from a bruise wheel. I used an eyeshadow brush to apply this product to the skin. I applied this product inside where I had applied the third degree for a base colour to make the blood appear darker which would later be applied and also gave the effect of a deeper wound. When applying this I made sure the colour was all in the area but not applied smoothly as this is a wound. Around the area around the bones, I used a thin craft brush to apply the product thicker and darker to give a lifted and deeper effect I applied some of this also onto the third degree. For the next colour product I used a black grease paint, I applied this product around the inside of the third degree and the bones to give a deeper wound effect which I applied with a thin craft brush. To finish adding colour by adding some of the red to some of the bone to give a dirty fresh wound effect which I applied using the eyeshadow brush which I used for the red where I used the excess off the brush so the product wouldn’t apply thick. Finally, I used fake blood however not a runny blood I used a chunky blood which I found created a deeper and fresh effect to the wound. I applied this using a spatula.

Analysis:

Strengths: I was really proud of this makeup I had completed on this day and was able to complete what I wanted exactly and will definitely use this in my final piece. I found that my strengths for this makeup was the deep effect. I was able to achieve the wound to look deep and as if it had just been done.

Weakness: Although I was very proud of what I was able to produce, I did have an element to improve on. I need to improve on the blending of the third degree. When I applied the colour, on the outside of the wound, the not good blending into the skin was apparent and stood out ruining the realism slightly of the wound which I wanted.

Conclusion:

When I had finished the makeup, I was very happy and proud of the makeup I was able to produce. I found that I achieved what I wanted to and am exited to do the full look for the competition. I will a make sure to keep practicing this makeup so I can perfect the techniques and overall look. When I showed my tutor, she was pleased with what I was able to produce which made me feel confident with my work.

What I took Away:

From watching and following along from this YouTube tutorial of the ripped throat which I will be including in my final piece I was able to learn and apply the techniques given in the tutorial. I have never done anything like this before so I was able to learn new techniques and ways of creating a wound. I found from watching this video, I find it easier and a smoother process using third degree instead of scar wax. Going into this I thought I would be using scar wax to complete this due to using third degree before and finding it difficult to work with but now I find this product to produce a realistic wound. From this I was able to finish the wound with a new skill picked up and being able to use bother scar wax and third degree in my future as a makeup artist. I also was able to learn a new technique of making bones out of latex and cotton pads. I have used bone wax before which I found was a good product but not as realistic and would have had to use a lot of the product if this was the product used to create this wound leaving others with a limited amount to use. I found latex and cotton pads created a realistic effect in the wound. I liked how the latex left a texture on the cotton pad adding even more realism to the wound. I found this video to be a successful tutorial and easy to follow along to and also helped me to gain more skills and techniques as a makeup artist.

Over the next 10 weeks, I will be prepping, planning, designing and completing makeup for a Glow Up Competition. Glow Up is a makeup competition featured on BBC and Netflix  where a group of makeup artists go head-to-head over a period of 2 months where they will have to tackle client briefs, professional jobs and face offs to win the title of first place which will secure them a contract with major makeup artists and departments in the industry. This competition has Val Garland and Dominic Skinner who are famous makeup artists who are very well known in the makeup industry. For our final major project, we will be holding our own Glow Up competition which will be inspired by Glow Up. This competition will be held in collage where a judge from outside of the competition will come in to decide the winner, it is important that the judge doesn’t know us personally and knows our strengths, weaknesses, skill level and way of working this is because it will make the judging unfair to everyone on the makeup team competing. The competition will be judged with the places of 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd. Our work will be judged on the creativity and originality of the makeup we have completed, our technical skills, our attention to detail and our professionalism.

Team Collaboration:

Team collaboration will be a massive part of making this competition come to life. Team collaboration is an important part for this competition, this is because everyone will be competing in the competition, and we will need to make sure there is an even playing field among the team to ensure no one has an advantage over everyone else.

What is team collaboration? Team collaboration is about a team of people working together in order to achieve a goal shared among all on the team. Everyone will be allowed to share their skills and ideas to the table and will be able to communicate in order to have a successful outcome. A goal with team collaboration is to be able to produce a successful outcome better than what an individual would be able to produce on their own.  As a team, we will need to choose a theme, have team meetings, health and safety, risk assessments, promotions, model care, a group timeline and group sessions.

Why is having team meetings important? Having team meetings as a makeup team is important for this competition, this is because it will keep everyone on the same page with everything we will come to decide for this competition. Having everyone on the same page will allow a unified idea among the team where everyone will understand everything that will be happening for the competition build up and the actual competition. We will also be able to tackle any problems and challenges as a team which will build a stronger team environment to help each other through our struggles for the competition. Team meeting also help to keep the project on track to allow any adjustments that my be needed to be put in place. What will happen in these team meetings? During these team meetings we will have, we will be able to share our ideas and where we are all at, at the time which will give us the opportunity to help each other improve our ideas giving everyone a chance to have their makeup skills pushed to their full potential. During the team meetings, we will also discuss how we are going to take care of our models during the makeup process of them sat in the makeup chair. Model care is important to do as a team as it will allow all models in the makeup chair to feel comfortable and have a positive and memorable experience.

Why is team health and safety important in a makeup competition? Being in a makeup team while being in a makeup competition is important for keeping everyone safe, focused, being creative and keeping everyone to push and perform their best in the competition. This means making as a team, making sure everyone is using in date and safe products on their model this is important because if an unsafe product or an out of date one is used on a model, this could cause cross contamination which way cause blemishes to appear, a reaction where on the face the product is applied. As a team, we will also need to make sure that each makeup artist as a clean workspace to work on. A clean workspace is important to ensure any cross contamination to be avoided. New York City: Milady. ‘A typical setup for a makeup station is a calean cotton terry towel placed on the counter in front of you with a professional perp towel on top of the cotton towel. This is a sanitary setup to keep your products and brushes off the counter, clean and germ free.’ As a team this also is to make sure that no one is stressed on the build up and the day of the competition which could cause a possible panic attack over the stress. If this was to happen, as a team we would all come together to help out the makeup artist to calm them down reshoring they are going to be okay and there is nothing to panic about. As a makeup team we will also need to make sure our makeup room environment is safe with no health risks. This will involve, making sure that the emergency exit is clear at all times in case of an emergency ensuring everyone will be able to leave the building safely with no harm caused. This will also include making sure the floor is clear to prevent anyone falling over and hurting themselves right before the competition, this includes models, makeup artists and anyone in the room. Keeping the door open is important also to keep fresh air through the room and if anyone is using latex or strong products to keep the smell out and if anyone is allergic to the product in the room, to prevent any allergic reactions occurring.

Why are risk assessments as a makeup team important? Risk assessments are important to do as a makeup team to be able to spot any potential hazards in the room, minimize any risks, ensure any health and safety measures are put into place. If risk assessments aren’t completed, potential hazards may be missed which could put people in the room at risk of injury or harm. Risk assessments are important to be done as a team as it brings different perspectives and some may spot a hazard that others may not. Doing them as a team also creates shared responsibility for the safety of others on the makeup team and models which will make the assessment effective. What is a risk assessment? A risk assessment is careful and mindful look around a space to figure anything that could cause possible harm to people in that space that could cause health issues, injury or accidents to happen.

Why are promotions important to be done as a makeup team? Doing promotions as a team is important because it ensures that there is fairness among the team meaning that everyone will be able to add and play their part in adding and posting what they would like and how they like things to be done. With that considered, if the promotion was on an Instagram account there would need to be consistency with for example the font used, this is because it allows a flow off the account making people be attracted to the account and want to come and see the happenings. This is also needed to be done as a team because it will be able to show different perspectives of how promotions should be done which will encourage strong communication. What is a promotion? A promotion is a way of convincing people to come and see an event or to use something for example, a product. A promotion can be done in many forms for example, a social media account and posters. What is model care? Model care is about ensuring that a model feels comfortable and their needs are considered. A model for makeup could be sat in a makeup chair for hours so they many need some breaks, drinks and snacks during the makeup process. As a makeup artist, model care should be a main priority and to make sure the model is happy in the environment. Why is model care important to be done as a makeup team? As a makeup team, model care needs to be a main priority. For this competition, the models could be sat down for hours so we need to make sure as a team we make all of the models feel comfortable. As a team, we could do this by putting money together to buy some drinks and sacks for the models to have while their makeup is being done. We will need to make sure as a team that everyone’s model is well taken care of and not just our own as this is a team effort.

What is a group timeline? A group timeline is a list of what will be completed on what week which helps to keep a makeup team organized and know what to expect in the upcoming week. Why is this important to do as a makeup team? This is important to do as a makeup team as it will allow everyone to have a full understanding on what will be happening and to make sure everyone will be on the same page to make sure that everyone will be able to get the things required done in time for each week. This will involve team collaboration as we will be able to complete this together as a team.

What are group sessions? Group sessions are sessions of doing makeup together. For example, in the future weeks, we will be having a session on body painting which is a technique some may want to use in their final makeup. Why are group sessions important to do as a team? Group sessions important to be done as a team because if someone on the makeup teams decides to do for example body painting in their final makeup and are unsure on what to do, another makeup artist will be able to help them out as they have also completed that session showing strong team collaboration.

As well as lots of team collaboration needed for this project, individual work will also be completed. Individually, we will have to decide on our chosen character that fits in with the team decided theme. Choosing a character and a story to go with that will allow an easier process when planning and doing the makeup. Having a character will allow references to be found to include in the makeup and adding their features into the makeup while making it my own. Having a storyline for a character will allow me to be able to show that story through the makeup which will help the judge to understand why we have done an element of the makeup. Individually, I will have to decide on my model. Deciding on my model is important as a makeup artist as when I come to planning my makeup, I will be able to use their face on a face chart which will make a smoother process when I come to do their makeup as I will be aware of their facial features and what doesn’t and does work on their facial feature. For example, face shape can affect where the makeup will go as contour may needed to be applied in different places. Deciding on my model is important also so I will be able to get early practice in on their face before the competition. I will also need to make sure my model is happy with what I will be doing with their makeup and know what will happen on the day. I will also be able to complete allergy tests, this is an important thing to do prior to the competition because if my model is allergic to a product I am wanting to use, I will have time to change this before the competition. This is also important because I need to make sure that I put my models health first to avoid any potential allergic reactions. Individually, I will have to sort out a costume. I will have to do this early to the competition, so that I will have time to make sure the costume fits the model and the costume will match up with the makeup I choose to do. I will need to make sure I update my Padlet and add any designs into my sketchbook to keep up to date with the project. I will have to create an individual time line of what I will complete each week. This is important so I will be able to keep on track with what I will need to do in what time while knowing what I will need to do and have completed for the upcoming week. This is important to do as a makeup artist to make sure I stay organized and show strong time management. I will have to plan a successful makeup that will show my story and character through the makeup. This will involve a lot of practice to see if I like the designs I have produced and will give me time if I done like my ideas. By seeing them on a person rather than just in my head, I will get a realistic look on to how the makeup will look and I will be able to have time to change any elements I don’t like.

What will be required?

I will be required to follow the given brief in order to achieve the requirements. To achieve this project, I will have to digitally document each step I take during the process on Padlet. I will have to do this so I will be able to achieve the brief. In this digital portfolio, I will include research. I will include this to show where I have got different elements of the makeup from and to have what I say backed up by quotes from books, websites and other makeup artists.  I will also show my development. I will show this because I will be able to see and refer back to my previous work for if I decide to change an idea or push myself further. I will show testing on here also. I will show this because I will be able to show my commitment to getting the makeup right and being able to meet the brief. This is important because I will need to show my progression. Testing is important because I will be able to see the makeup and decide if I would like to include this in my final piece and to be able to push myself. I will also show my progression. This is important to include because I will be able to look back on what I would have completed so far and show my journey.

By the end of the 9 weeks, I will have to have produced a fully-executed makeup design which will be applied to the model for the competition. This will have a long process in order to achieve this and a design which is well thought through and shows my passion for makeup throughout. The final look, will have to include hair, nails and a costume. Hair is important to pull a whole look together which will help to show the character and will help the makeup be shown through. The hair will also be able to show what type of person the character is for example, if the character is a messy person, they will have messy hair. Nails are also important and will push my design and character to its full potential. A costume is important and will help to show the character more than just with makeup.

I will do this to show the theme of the competition and character, what inspired my makeup, different colours used and represented, textures and visual influences. This mood board will be next to my model in the competition so that people looking and the judges will be able to understand my concept of the makeup I have completed.

I will also have to complete a makeup artist research of which makeup artists work relates to mine and to show what techniques they have used that inspired me and the makeup I will come to complete. Looking at different makeup artists will be able to inspire my ideas and learn and see different ways of doing techniques.

I will have to produce a sketchbook. In my sketch book I will show my designs and how they change throughout the planning and designing process. This will allow to show how my designs change and will be what I follow off when I come to do the final makeup. I will design face charts, hair, costume and makeup I will complete on the body. I will show my experiments in my sketchbook also, I will do this to show my progression and how I change my design and the reasonings why. I will show my sampling that I complete. Sampling could be different techniques I have used in the makeup, the materials I use to do the makeup and the style I have chosen to complete in the makeup.

I will have to complete a group and individual timeline. These timelines will show how I and the makeup team will manage our time and workload throughout the 9 week process. These timelines will include sessions, research and evaluations and when they should be done for and in which week. Timelines are important to help manage time management and organisation as a makeup artist.

Collaborative tasks will be required through the process of the 9 weeks. These are important because we will all be able to complete this together and will be able to prepare ourselves for working in a professional makeup team in a future as makeup artists.

Presentation is required for this project. Presentation is important for this project because how I will present and the effort I put into Padlet, my sketchbook and makeup will need to be strong as I will be able to grab people looking at its attention and have them to understand my reasonings for things I do and to ensure they have a clear view.

Development of designs is important because I will have to show my progression throughout. Thorough out the process and progression of my designs I will  be showing them to others on the makeup team and my tutor for effective feedback which will help to develop my design.

A final evaluation is required also. This will show myself giving a critical reflection on the makeup I have been able to complete and the whole process I would have been through. In the evaluation, I will share mine and others opinions on my final makeup, and the process I have been through sharing my strengths and weaknesses and what I would do if I could improve the makeup and process.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I am feeling exited for the competition and ready to face all the challenges I may face during the process. I am ready to show all my skills I have learnt during my first year in collage on my course. I think this experience will be able to prepare myself for my future as a makeup artist and make me the best I can be.

Today we had a group session on how to Harvard Reference. What is Harvard Referencing? Harvard Referencing is method of showing how and where you have taken a piece of information from. Harvard Referencing can be used for referencing many types of information for example from a book. The reasoning for this session is to be able to learn how to Harvard Reference as we will need to do that for our final major project to show where we have got sources of information from. For our final major project, we will have to use references coming from resources such as books and websites.

Harvard Referencing for a book:

The first type of Harvard References we learned in our session was taking information from books. In our final major project, we will have to use a wide range of books to find out information, back up what we say and for research. Books are more likely to be my main source of research which I prefer to use as I am able to have lots of information in one place which shows a reliable source of information.

A website also may be used for makeup artist research to find out information about them. However, some websites aren’t reliable and could hold false information, an example of websites like these is Wikipedia. The reasoning for Wikipedia not to be a good place to find information from is because Wikipedia allows anyone to be able to go on the website and edit what the information says due to this, not everything on there is factual information and will need to be checked on other websites before using the information Wikipedia provides.

Conclusion:

In conclusion from the Harvard Referencing session from today, I have been able to learn how to Harvard Reference which will be an important skill I will need to show in my final major project. Using references in my work will be important to show I am doing independent research and being able to back up my opinions. Today was beneficial to me and will be able to include what I have learned in my work in this project and future ones.

Introduction:

Today, I decided I wanted to practice one of my ideas for the makeup I will complete for the competition. For my final major project, I have to complete 6 hours per week of practical work (50% of my total time). This practical work can include for example makeup practice and  costume making which are both forms of practical work. My 6 hours of practical work will be completed for this week as I have previously completed two practical forms work this week. I had a fail attempt on this makeup and completed it a second time to try and improve this. I didn’t want to give up on my idea because I really wanted this featured in my makeup as this would be a good way to show Ursula who attacked Ariel through the makeup.

Why am I Including this in my Makeup?

I am including this sfx makeup in my final major project to show the attack off Ursula to Ariel. Ursula is an evil sea which who is an octopus who has tentacles. The tentacles I will complete will be wrapping around my models arms to show Ursula grabbing her tightly with her tentacles during the attack. I wanted an element of Ursula showing in this makeup as I want it to show why has she ended up in the state she is in. I will show the attack in two other ways with them being a ripped throat and gashes on my models stomach.

Work Description:

I have used these products before to create a burn and wanted to do the tentacles in a similar way however using a different shape and with a different scenario. To start this makeup, I drew an outline of a tentacle on my models arm using grease paint and a thin craft brush, I used a thin craft brush to ensure precision and I would have more control of the shape. I started at the top of the arm going down to under the arm which I would join up with the same shape line to join together. I used a purple grease paint to do this as that would be the colour I would use on the tentacle, I wanted to use purple as Ursula is purple and this would show her through the makeup also. Once I had completed the outline, I used latex Price, N. (2024) Google. Available at:  What Is Liquid Latex? Uses & Shelf Life (with pictures) (16.4.24) says, ‘ Liquid latex, also known as body paint, is a type of special effects makeup that is used to simulate skin’ which I applied with a beauty blender inside the outline I had drew. I made sure to do this in sections as latex is fast drying and would have set by time, I had done the whole tentacle causing me to be unable to stick the tissue to the latex. Once I had done a section of the arm, I split a tissue in half to create a thinner piece. I applied the tissue to the latex pressing it down to make sure all the tissue covered the latex. I then repeated this process going all down where I had drew the outline. When I had finished doing that process down the outline, there was excess tissue so I used scissors to cut the tissue off and make sure the shape wasn’t affected. I then dried the latex using a hairdryer. I made sure that the temperature of the hairdryer wasn’t too hot so I didn’t burn my model as if the temperature was too hot this would not demonstrate good model care. I then repeated this process 4 more time to make sure the tentacle would look lifted and 3D. Once I had completed the latex and tissue technique, I applied the colour to the tentacle. The product I used was grease paint, I used this product because I find grease paint an easy product to work with as it blends well and not a lot of product is needed. I used the colour purple as I wanted Ursula to be shown through as she is who attacked Ariel. I used a dense brush to apply this to make sure the colour would cover the whole tentacle with full coverage to avoid any of the tissue showing through. I applied this all down the tentacle. I then used a darker shade of purple grease paint and applied this using a thin craft brush to allow precision and control. I applied this around the outside of the tentacle to give a lifted 3D affect. To finish off this makeup it had to make suckers. To make the suckers, I used cotton pads and latex. I started by drawing a circle on the cotton pad to use as an outline which I then cut out using scissors. Once I had a circle, I folded the cotton pad in half an cut a small line in the middle to create a circle in the middle of the first circle to create the look of a sucker. I then repeated this process a few more times to go down the tentacle. I used the same technique as I did for the ripped throat for the bones. I poured some latex into a bowl and dipped the cotton pads into the latex into making sure both sides of the cotton pad was covered. I then applied this to the tentacle slightly down from where it started to then use a hairdryer to dry the latex making sure it would stick. While I was drying the latex I made sure to hold the cotton pad into shape to avoid it from slipping off. I then repeated this process until the whole tentacle had suckers on. I left the suckers to be white as this is how they are on a octopus tentacles.

Analysis:

Strengths: I found that for this makeup, my strengths was the latex and tissue application. I was able to give a good application of the products. I liked how the latex left a bumpy texture to the tentacle to show an irritated aftermath and also gave a lifted 3D affect which is what I wanted. I found that another strength I had for this makeup was the shape of the tentacle. I was able to give a realistic shape to how a tentacle is.

Weakness: I was not happy with the makeup I produced. I found that my weakness was the colour. The colour didn’t look irritated which is what I wanted I could have improved this by adding red around the tentacle or inside of it in certain parts to make it look irritated. Even though I wanted to use purple to show Ursula, using purple just didn’t work.

Reflection:

I definitely want to practice this makeup again because I want this to be included in the final makeup I complete. When I come to do this again, I will make sure to use a different colour such as red as I found using purple ruined the makeup. The makeup I completed didn’t meet my vision of how I wanted it to look but I will make sure to do this again to try make my vision happen.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I was left not satisfied with the makeup I have completed. I was able to get the shape I wanted but not the vison. However, I really want to be able to include this in my final makeup for the competition as I think I have came up with a good idea and features Ursula in the makeup.

Reflection:

I definitely want to practice this makeup again because I want this to be included in the final makeup I complete. When I come to do this again, I will make the colour be a less bright red making it slightly darker as I think the red I used was too bright, I would improve this by mixing in some black to darken the colour. I would also improve on making the suckers smaller and applying them side by side instead of just one line I would do two lines of them.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I was left happier but still not fully  satisfied with the makeup I have completed. I was able to get the shape I wanted but not the vison. However, I really want to be able to include this in my final makeup for the competition as I think I have came up with a good idea and features Ursula in the makeup. I am proud that I was able to improve them but there is still a lot of practice and improvement needed to be done.

Introduction:

Today, I decided I wanted to practice the ripped throat again. When I practiced this previously, I wanted to make it bigger bringing it down to the collar bone area on the body. I wanted to make it bigger because I thought that it wouldn’t be as visible and I want this to be what makes the makeup stand out and also will show my story. However, when I come to complete this makeup that decision would changed. I completed this makeup in the same way I did for the previous ripped throat I completed but I didn’t need to watch the tutorial as I know how to do these techniques now.

Why am I Including this in my Makeup?

I have decided to include this in my makeup to show the attack that Ursula done on Ariel. In the story of The Little Mermaid, Ursula takes Ariels voice in exchange for Ariel to have legs so she can be with her prince. At the end of the story, Ursula turns herself into a human to go and marry the price who Ariel has fallen deeply in love with when Ursula gets exposed, Ariel manages to get to get her voice back. Ursula grows anger and turns on Ariel to attack her ripping her voice out of her throat. I want this element of the makeup to be the centre piece of the makeup I will complete.

Work Description:

I didn’t change the process I had used in the first time I did this makeup, this was because the way I completed this makeup previously worked really well and came out how I had visioned it to be like. However, I did change some elements of this makeup to make it bigger. When I came to do the third degree, I made sure to make more of the product as I would be changing the size which resulted in needing more product to be used. I started by doing the same shape as I did on my first practice however, I didn’t join them together when I came to the bottom of the throat. Instead of joining it together in the same place I did on my first practice, I brought the product down to just under neath the collar bones and joined it together there. I did this to make the wound bigger. The second element of the makeup I changed from the first practice I did was the bones. I did the same bones as I did in the first one however this time, I added in the collar bones. I used the same technique to do this but just repeating the process more times. I made sure to add the fake collar bones to where my models collar bones are to add to the realism I wanted.

Analysis:

Strengths: I did like the way this turned out but not as much as the first time I did this makeup. However, my strength was the colouring and the blood. The blood I used was chunky blood which I also used on the first practice I did and I love the way this looked giving it a deeper and realistic effect better than what a looser form of blood would look on the wound. I used the same colours in the same places as I did in the first practice I did and I loved the way this looked and made the wound realistic.

Weakness: I found that my weakness for this makeup was the shape. I didn’t like the shape and found that the first practice I did looked better. The shape I completed for this practice wasn’t even on both sides which I though affected the way the wound looked after I had completed it. I also didn’t like the size, the wound looked better being smaller. The size I did for this practice was too big which affected the overall look of the wound.

Comparison:

I haven’t noticed any improvements of this makeup I did compared to the first one I completed. I like the first one I did more than this one just to the sizing of it. I was happy that I was able to remember the techniques and steps to do this makeup from the tutorial which did make me more confidence.

Feedback:

When I had finished this makeup, I showed my tutor of what I was able to do. She also thought that the first wound I did looked better and the size of this one was too big. I also showed and asked my peers for feedback and they also agreed.

Future Directions:

For future directions, I will make sure to not do the wound this big and will do the wound the same as I did the first time with the improvements I wanted to make.

Conclusion:

In conclusion from today’s work, I will not be going forward with making the wound bigger as it didn’t look right. I will make sure to do the wound the same way I did the first time as it looked better and I was happy with the way it turned out. I wasn’t disappointed of how this looked but I do prefer the way my first one turned out. From today, I was able to take away how I should have more confidence in myself. I am happy that I was able to discover that the first one I did was better and not to change it in future.

Introduction:

Today, I thought I would try body paining again. I wasn’t too keen on this technique however, I wanted to try include this technique into my final major project as a few weeks ago we did a session on body painting to possibly use in our final major projects. The body paining I practiced would feature on the leg of my model however, I practiced on a makeup artist arm who said she would be my model to practice on. I needed something on the leg because the costume I have has a short skirt meaning the whole leg will be shown. Something needed to be on the leg as the arms, stomach, face and neck will all have makeup on. I decided I would try some star fish. Body painting - Wikipedia says 'Body painting is a form of body art where artwork is painted directly onto the human skin. It is temporary, lasting several hours or sometimes up to a few weeks. Unlike tattoos, which are permanent, body painting is a non-permanent way to decorate the body creatively. Body paint is a type of paint that is specially formulated to be used on the human body. It is typically made from water-based ingredients and can be applied directly to the skin.'

Products Used:

Work Description:

I started off by using a white water colour will a thin craft brush to outline a star fish. I used a thin craft brush to ensure I had full control over brush and ensured precision. I started with a ruff outline which I would be able to come back and fix later on when I would come to adding colour and blending. I used a reference picture of a starfish to follow off. Once I had finished the outline, I started adding the colour. I used an orange water colour in order to do this. I used a bigger craft brush with a thin tip to still make sure I had control. Once the colour was added, it was then time to add the suckers. To create theme, I used a cotton bud and applied water to it and applied the suckers. Since this is water colour, the product will come off using water so using a cotton bud was an easy way to have a the suckers being the same size. I did the suckers coming down from each tentacle going into the middle. I then added white around the suckers so they would be able to stand out.

Analysis:

Strengths: I wasn’t pleased with how this body painting turned out but I thought that my strength for this makeup was the outline. I was able to produce the same outline shape as the reference picture I followed off creating a realistic shape of a starfish.

Weaknesses: I think that my weakness what the realism. I think that of I included a starfish body paining in my final major project, it would ruin the look of the makeup. Starfish also don’t fit in with my story I have made for my character as Ariel will not be in the sea when the attack happens, she will be on land.

Conclusion: In conclusion, I wasn’t satisfied with what I was able to complete. I think that if I was to complete starfish body painting for my final makeup, it will look out of place and not fit in with my story. I would still like to include body painting in my final makeup, however I wont be doing starfish.

Today, we had another team meeting which is important to have regularly for this project as this is a collaborative effort and we need to keep updating each other with where we are at for our competition work to maybe help and discuss with people who are struggling which will also allow us all to stay on the same page and share our ideas to gain improvement. In these team meetings we can also have the opportunity to share any problems we are having to help to come up with solutions as a team. In today’s team meeting we each shared our ideas of the makeup, costume, hair, nails and any added extras that we will be doing for the competition. This is important to do and keep regular updates with as we will be given the opportunity to receive improvement ideas and some ideas, we may not have thought of that will help to give our characters an extra push. Today, I also completed some practical work which I will share on a separate post. This is important of me doing this, so I am able to complete my 6 hours a week of practical work which is set as a requirement in the brief.

Team Meeting:

Today’s team meeting was discussing about our ideas for our characters for the competition. We conducted this team meeting of sharing ideas in a way everyone could have their turn to share their ideas we did this by taking it in turns volunteering ourselves as the meeting went on to share what we have came up with. As everyone on the makeup team shared their thoughts and ideas, I made sure to listen carefully to what they were saying so I was able to possibly come up with some ideas to inform them of so they could possibly improve their ideas to push their character making it the best it can be. This is important to do as part as a makeup team as it demonstrates team collaboration and communication skills. These are important skills to have as a makeup artist as in the future we will be possibly working with other makeup artists for job where will have to all be able to collaborate in order to compete the jobs successfully and will help to bring the vision wanted together. Communication skills is an important skill to have as a makeup artist also because in the future we will have to be able to communicate with our clients or team wants and the vision they see, we will also have to explain our ideas clearly and provide reasons why we think the way we do and to be able to receive and give feedback effectively.

Team Meeting:

Sharing my Ideas:

When it came to my turn to share my ideas, I made sure to speak clearly so everyone would be able to hear and take in what I was saying to possibly be able to help me with improving or adding to my ideas. I started by explaining which character I am going to be doing along with the story behind the makeup, so everyone was able to understand why I was including certain parts of the makeup. For example, I shared of why I am doing the ripped throat which my reasoning for this is because in my story Ursula attacks Ariel after she manages to retrieve her voice back with Ursula ripping Ariels voice out of her throat. I then moved onto explain the face makeup which is a glam makeup look as I want the face to be beautiful and the body to be gory. I received an idea on for the face makeup, this idea was from a makeup artist on the team. The idea was to make my models face to have a blue tinge to it making her appear dead and also having some messed up mascara or lipstick to show her crying. I wasn’t too keen on these ideas as I did say and don’t want her to look dead, I would like the face to be beautiful with the body being gory with wounds. I am grateful to have received feedback for my makeup, but I will not be using this feedback in my final makeup. I then went onto share the hair I will be completing. I shared that I will be completing pin curls to leave the hair bouncy and curly. I have purchased some hair rings with shells on to put into the hair. I will put these in the hair by doing small plats to apply the hair rings onto, so they have something to hold onto securely. The plats will not be big as I don’t want them to be visible. I then went onto describe the costume I have bought for the competition. Everyone seemed to like the ideas I had came up with which I was happy with. I found sharing my ideas to be beneficial because I was able to receive some feedback and get an idea for others on the makeup teams thoughts about my ideas.

Conclusion:

In conclusion from today’s team meeting, I found it to be beneficial as I was able to demonstrate some needed skills as a makeup artist. I was able to demonstrate communication skills by explaining and sharing my ideas for the competition. We will keep having regular team meeting for this project in order to achieve the brief successfully as a team.  

Today, I decided I would use up some of my practical time which is 6 hours a week (50% of my total week time) and practice hair. I am confident with hair and am able to do many styles with hair however, for my project I want to do pin curls which I have never done before so I will need to practice in order to make sure I am confident with this hairstyle. What are pin curls? Pin curls are a way of curing hair that will last for a long time. To create pin curls, the hair will need to be curled with a curling wand then rolled up to the roots and then secured into place using a hair grip of clip. Pin curls are ideal for a wanted long lasting curl as these can be left with time to set while other parts such as makeup is completed. My reasoning for completing pin curls is to have my model’s hair to be bouncy and curly as Ariels hair is styled in a similar way. Ariels hair is more towards wavy than curled but since I am not wanting to completely copy Ariel, I am going for a bouncy curl as I think this will help to complement my model and the makeup I will complete. Even though, I don’t want to copy all of Ariels features, I will still have to show some of Ariel though the makeup, hair and costume so it is apparent of who my model is. Since the face of my model will be beautiful with a glam makeup look, I will need the hair to also give off a glam and beautiful look. I will make sure to practice pin curls a few times to ensure I am confident and will be able to do this hairstyle on the day of the competition.

Work Description:

Before I applied any heat to the hair, I brushed the hair I did this to make sure there was no knots in the hair that I may have accidentally pulled on when I came to curling the hair. I needed the hair to be smooth and brushed thoroughly before I could begin. To avoid any hair breakage, it was important that I didn’t brush the hair from the roots down instead I brushed the hair starting with the ends then working my way up to the roots. This is important to do as the ends of the hair won’t have as much pressure or pulling put onto them which avoids hair breakage and damage. Once the hair was brushed through, I started with the front pieces. For the front pieces of the hair, the makeup artist I was practicing the hair on has shorts pieces at the from so I started by using a tail comb to section the front pieces away from the rest of the hair. To make sure both sections were even, I brought the two front pieces forward to check both sides had an even amount of hair taken. I had managed to get the hair even but if I hadn’t, I would have used the tail comb to take hair or put hair back. For the front pieces of the hair I wanted them to have a flick rather than a full on curl, I wanted this as having a flick on the front pieces defines the face shape. To do this, I brought the hair to the front of the face and then I used hair straighteners I started by going onto the hair as if I was straightening it and pulled downwards and when I got towards the ends, I flicked the hair towards the face. To make sure the flick would hold, I used a hair roller. To put the hair roller into the hair. I put the roller at the front of the hair and started at the ends and roller upwards to then secure into place with two hair grips. To ensure the lick would hold I then sprayed a little bit of hairspray. I then moved onto the pin curls, to do these I needed a curling wand, hair grips and hairspray. I started by grabbing a section of hair and wrapped the hair around the curling wand which I held on there for around 30 seconds and the removed the hair off the curling iron. To pink the curl into place, I then went from the ends of the hair and rolled the hair upwards using my fingers to go towards the roots. I then secured this into place using a hair grip. I then repeated this process until I had curled and pinned the whole head of hair. With every few curls I sprayed some hairspray to secure them and ensure a string hold of the curls once the pins were removed. Once the whole head was curled, I started to take the hair grips out of the hair. When I took each pin out of the hair, I scrunched the curl with my hands then let the hair go, I did this because I find it helped to define the curl even more. When I had taken all the hair grips out of hair, I sprayed the hair with hair spray. To take the roller out which I did last, I took the grips out and then pulled gently downwards to then spray that with hairspray also.

Analysis:

Strengths~ I was proud with the hair I was able to produce. I found that my strengths of this practical work was the finished result of the curls. The curls came out bouncy with volume leaving a strong curl which is what I wanted. I will need to make sure I achieve this in the competition to come out with a beautiful, finished result.

Weakness~ Even though I was proud of the hair I was able to complete I still do need to make improvements. When I was curling the hair, I didn’t do the hair in sections for example starting with the crown of the head and going all the way round to then move onto the next section below that. If I would have done that, it would have made the process easier and easier to manage. I also need to not put as much hairspray in, when I come to practice this hair again, I will just apply hairspray when the hair is all pinned and also when it’s been taken out with not using loads.  

Conclusion:

In conclusion from today, I am proud of what I was able to produce with this also being my first time doing pin curls. I still do have room for improvement with this hairstyle but I will make sure to practice this a few times before the competition to make sure I am confident and am able to do this hairstyle successfully. I will definitely be using this hairstyle for the competition. For the competition, I will make sure to do the hair first so they will have a long time to set which will leave a bouncy curly look to the hair.

The practical work I wanted to complete today was a large gash on the stomach of my model which I will do using 3D gel. I have used 3D gel to make a cut before and also I have used this product to create the ripped throat that I will also be including in the makeup for the competition. The cut I have completed a few months ago, I will use the same process however in a bigger proportion and on a different area of the body.

Why am I Including this in my Makeup for the Competition?

My reasoning for including this in the makeup for my final project is because in my story Ariel gets attacked by Ursula because Ariel manages to retrieve her voice back which angers Ursula causing her to attack her. Ursula has long sharp nails which in my story, Ursula claws at Ariel during the attack which leaves Ariel with a large cut or cuts on her stomach. I am not sure yet if I will only complete one or more cuts on my model’s stomach, but I will find that out by practicing and seeing which looks better. For this being my first practice, I only completed one cut.

Work Description:

To start this cut which I would be completing on my model’s stomach, I started by making the 3D gel. 3D gel is a product that consists of three different products which needs to be evenly put together to create the final product. I stated by taking an even amount of each product to make sure I would end up with the correct formula that will create the cut. It was important that I didn’t double dip into the different products as if I did the product would end up setting which would ruin the product and wouldn’t be able to be used anymore. To avoid this, I made sure to wipe my spatula in between each time I moved onto using a different product. I mixed all three products together on my pallet using my spatula. Once I had mixed the 3D gel together, I applied it onto my model’s stomach. I applied a thick amount of product onto my spatula and applied this in a line onto the stomach. I did two lines of the 3D gel with a slight gap in between to then join them together. To make the cut appear deep, I used my spatula to push the product upwards going from the bottom pushing upwards to lift the product upwards. So I could move onto the next step, I used a hairdryer to speed up the drying process as it was taking a long time to dry as I had layered the product thick. I made sure to have the hairdryer on a not too high heat setting to avoid burning my model as this would not show good model care. Once the 3D gel had all set, I moved onto adding colour. On the inside of the cut, I used red from a bruise wheel in the inside of the cut, I added the red not perfectly as it is a cut and will have different shades and patches of colour if it was real, I applied this using a dense brush as I find these types of brushes make a product easier to apply. Around the edges of the cut, I applied the product thicker to make it appear darker which also would help with the making the cut looking deeper. To add to that, I used some black grease paint which I applied on the inside of the 3D gel to add to the darkness of the red which would help with how dark the blood will look once its applied. To create some irritation around the cut, I used the excess of the brush I used to apply the red and applied that around the cut which I made sure to push into the skin so the product didn’t look like it was sitting on top of the skin which would make the wound not look realistic. To finish off, I added blood. I made sure to use thick blood as I find it makes the wound look realistic and with the blood being thick, the colour appears darker.

Analysis:

Strengths: I was satisfied with what I was able to produce but I do have room for improvement. I found that my strength for this makeup is the 3D gel application. I was able to product a shape that looked like a cut, with how I applied the 3D gel to make it look thick and deeper. I also found that the blood I used was a good choice over using a thinner formula of fake blood, I found that using thick blood helped with the realism appearance.

Weakness: I found that my weakness for this makeup would have been the red around the cut. I should have added it all around the cut with a mix of other colours such as a slight bit of purple which will help the realism. I will make sure to work the product into the skin to make the product look like its coming from the inside of the skin rather than just being sat on top of the skin. I could also improve on having the wound central of the stomach on a slight angle as that’s the way a scratch/cut is created.

Conclusion:

In conclusion from today’s work, I am satisfied with what I was able to produce. I will be in need of having more practice and will most likely add a second or even third scratch to really draw attention and be able to show the attack. I would really like to include this idea in my final makeup so I will keep practicing so I am confident and able to master this technique.

Today I decided I would complete some practical work to be able to have accomplish 6 hours a week of practical work which I will have to make sure to complete each week in order for me to be able to achieve the brief. One of the practical works I had chosen to do today was body paining which I had completed in the previous weeks. The last body painting it did was of starfish which I practiced on a models arm which for the competition I would have completed on the leg. However, I didn’t like the way the starfish looked, and I thought it looked out of place on the model and wouldn’t go very well with the story of my character. What is body painting art? - California Learning Resource Network says 'Body painting art is a form of art that involves painting or drawing designs, patterns, or images directly onto the human body. This unique form of art has been around for centuries.'

Why am I Including this in my Project?

My reasoning for including this in my project makeup for the competition is because on the arms of my model I will be making tentacles out of latex to apply to the arms, because of this and I want to be able to include a variety of makeup techniques in the makeup for the competition to be able to push myself and to be able to grow my confidence. For the body painting, I will be completing tentacles like I will do on the arms however in a different colour. On the arms, the tentacles will be red to show the left over of Ursula gripping onto Ariel in the attack however on the legs I will complete the tentacles purple to show an element of Ursula though the makeup as Ursula is purple. I think that including body painting in my makeup for the competition will help to push my design and push me by using techniques that I am newer to than others that I am including such as special effects makeup.

Work Description:

To start this makeup, I had to make a purple water colour since I didn’t have enough to be able to do the full arm, so I had to mix some colours together, I mixed the colours blue and red in order to make purple. The purple I made came out darker than I wanted so to help this, I mixed some white in there also to lighten the colour for my desired colour to come out. When I came to applying the body art to my model, I started by making an outline of the tentacle to I would be able to get my desired shape when I found come to filling in with colour. To draw the outline, I used a thin craft brush to ensure I have precision and control over the outline I was drawing on the arm. The tentacle I drew was warping round the arm to make the appearance of Ursula having her tentacles wrapped round Ariel. When I came to fill in the outline, I used a flat craft brush. To make sure there was no streak marks, I made sure to go downwards when completing the filling in of the outline. When it came to adding the suckers, I decided I would use a cotton bud that I would dip in water as the water would take off the area of water colour that I wanted off as water colour is activated and removed using water. I dipped the cotton bud in some waters and removed the excess by wiping the cotton bud on some tissue. I then, applied the cotton bud to the arm and outlined a circle which I would then use the water to clean off the water colour in the centre of the outline. I then repeated this process with one sucker next to each other going all down the arm which was two rows. I then ran out of time but when I come to do this again, I will use a lilac water colour to fill in the suckers.

Analysis:

Strengths: I found that my strengths for this makeup was the shape of the tentacle. I was able to replicate the shape of an actual tentacle. I am satisfied with what I was able to complete and found that I prefer doing a tentacle over a starfish on the leg and I will make sure to do a tentacle for my makeup for the competition.

Weaknesses: I found that my weakness was the time which resulted in an unfinished makeup. This was due to the collage day ending. To improve on this, I will make sure to do this earlier on in the day so I will be able to have time. To add to the tentacle, I will add in the suckers to be lilac so they are a lighter purple than the tentacle itself.

Conclusion:

I also didn’t add in as much hairspray which also helped the curls in their final result.

Weakness~ Even though I was proud of the hair I was able to complete, and it looked better and worked better than the pin curls I had completed previously that week. I think that I was able to improve on what I didn’t  last time and took in the feedback I had given myself after I had reflected on my work. I could have improved this hair by using flat clips instead of grips as the pins would hold better as a few had fallen out.

Conclusion:

In conclusion from today, I am proud of what I was able to produce. I still do have room for improvement with this hairstyle but I will make sure to practice this a few times before the competition to make sure I am confident and am able to do this hairstyle successfully. I will definitely be using this hairstyle for the competition. For the competition, I will make sure to do the hair first so they will have a long time to set which will leave a bouncy curly look to the hair.

Age: So, I would be able to have different sources of research, I decided I would re-watch The Little Mermaid movie but watch it closely to find out some information I may of missed when I previously watched the movie. I did this so I could maybe find some things I could incorporate into my makeup for the competition. While I watched the movie, I was able to find out the age of Ariel, in the movie Ariel says to her dad, ‘I’m 16 years old, I am not a child’ Ariel says this when she is having an argument with her dad about Ariel going up to the surface of the water and could have been seen by the humans, when she first falls in love with Prince Eric. From this quote, I am able to take away that the makeup I should complete on the face needs to make her look 16 years old which I have also taken into consideration when choosing my model with having my model to be around the same age as Ariel. By doing this, I am able to make use of my model’s facial features as they may be similar to Ariels with the closeness in age. In this quote, Ariel also says ‘I am not a child’, from this quote I can take away that by saying that Ariel may want to make herself look and appear older this could be done through the makeup I complete on my models face makeup and through the costume I decided on choosing for my model to wear for the competition.

Personality: From watching the movie, Ariel seems to have a rebellious personality this is an important part of information to find out as I will be able to include this personality trait though the makeup and even costume. I have taken away that she is rebellious because in different scenes in the movie she is a rebellious character for example, Ariel goes against her dad’s rules for her and the whole kingdom of not being allowed to go about the water in case of them being seen by the humas which Ariel goes and does showing rebellion against her dad’s rules. In the theatre script of The Little Mermaid, Sebastion says to Ariel, ‘Careless and reckless behaviour!’, this quote also shows how Ariel has demonstrated some rebellious behaviour. For the face makeup I am wanting to include a red lip which will help show her personality. The colour red can mean many things one of that being rebellion which will show her personality. I will also be able to show rebellion through the costume. The costume I have chosen is a revealing costume so this could also show Ariel rebelling against her dad with her choice of clothing when out of the sea. The colour red also represents love. Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric at the start of the story and continues throughout the story. By completing the red lip, this will show how she has fallen in love and still is in love.

Face: When I was researching about Ariel, I found out her age which is 16 years old which I will be able to show though the makeup which will mean she will look young and beautiful. I looked at many images of Ariel drew and produced from different people. From looking at pictures of Ariel I have been able to see that her face is snatched, and she has sharp apparent cheek bones, jaw line and nose. To show this through the makeup, I will use contour on these areas as well as the forehead to show this. Ariels lashes appear to be long and thick; I will also include this in my face makeup. To do this, I will use false lashes. However, due to me including eye makeup, I will make sure not to use too thick of lashes so they will not ruin the look of the eye makeup by covering up the eye makeup I will complete.

Ursula:

About her: Although I am not doing Ursula for the competition, I still need to research on her character as Ursula is featured in my story of who attacks Ariel. When I watched the movie to find out more details about Ariel, I came across this quote said by Ariel to Ursulas helpers, ‘the sea witch?’. From this quote saying the world witch, I am able to take away that she is an evil character as witch is associated with evil. This is the reason of me choosing to have Ursula attack Ariel which will show how much of an evil character she is. Ursula is part human part octopus which is also known as a Cecalia. From this information, I will be including an element of Ursula through the makeup by using special effects. I will do this by on the arms of my Model I will create the after math of Ursulas tentacle’s gripping onto Ariel as special effects being a wound and on the legs which I will do as body paint, will be Ursulas tentacles again but however these will not appear as a wound I will have them being purple which is the colour of Ursula.

From the Attack: In the story of The Little Mermaid, Ursula manipulates Ariel into signing a contract for Ursula to give Ariel legs so she can go and be with her prince in exchange for Ariel giving Ursula her voice but there is a catch. Ursula says, ‘Before the sun sets on the third day, you’ve got to get dear old princy to fall in love with you…if he does kiss you before the sun sets on the third day, you will remain human permanently but if he doesn’t you turn back into a mermaid and you belong to me.’ Later on in the story, Ursula disguises herself as a human and uses Ariels voice to catch Erics attention as that is how he remembers Ariel when she rescues him from drowning in the sea which led Ursula to try to marry Eric so she can have Ariel and capture her. Ariel is unable to achieve the contract to stay human permanently and Ursula is revealed as her true self while losing Ariels voice in the process meaning Ariel gets her voice back which angers Ursula causing her to attack her. For the makeup where I wills how the attack, the main piece will be the ripped-out throat which I am saying that Ursula ripped Ariels voice out of Ariels throat. In images of Ursula, she has really long nails that look sharp so I thought I would include some large cuts on the stomach of my model to make it look like Ursula had been clawing at Ariels stomach. For the lest bit of the attack shown through makeup, I will have Ursulas tentacles as wounds on my model’s arms to show Ursula gripping onto Ariel.

Who is Charlotte Tilbury?

Charlotte Tilbury is a worldwide known British makeup artist and makeup cosmetics brand owner. Charlotte Tilbury started her journey as a makeup artist in the 1990’s and created her own brand where she creates makeup products, skin care products and even perfume now. In the September of 2013, Charlotte Tilbury created her own makeup cosmetics brand named after herself, which was introduced first and Selfridges located in London, England and is now located across the country and even globally.

Where did her Journey Begin and now at?

When Charlotte Tilbury turned 13 years old, this is where her love or makeup first started. When she was age 13, she first discovered how mascara was able to transform her lashes and enhance her appearance which is when she realised the amount of confidence and attention, she was able to gain from the power of makeup. From this moment, her love of makeup began which created a passion to succeed a career in makeup. This all came from at the age of 13 she moved to London to attend Rudolf Steiner Boarding School which is located in Sussex where she saw other girls around her wearing makeup and she wanted to try that out which was when her discovery of the confidence makeup can give to people. Over time after applying and experimenting with makeup on herself, she began to start applying makeup to her friends where she was able to learn and advance in different techniques in makeup. Over time, Charlotte realised the true power of makeup which can boost confidence for herself and others which was able to add to her interest in the makeup industry. After her time at school came to an end, she then went on to study at a makeup collage which was, Glauca Rossi School of Makeup which is located in London where she was able to improve her techniques and skills in makeup. When she had completed her time at her collage, she then started to work and assist Mary Greenwell who is a London-based makeup artist. Charlotte Tilbury had previously met Mary Greenwell when she was just 11 years old. With assisting Mary Greenwell in the 1990’s, she would work along side her on different projects in the makeup industry. Charlotte said that Mary Greenwell is ‘an incredible mentor’. Charlotte Tilbury then started doing makeup for brands such as Prada, Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli, Lanvin and Chloe. Why does Charlotte Tilbury Relate to my Concept?

I have chosen to research into Charlotte Tilbury because I find she relates to one of my concepts in my work I will be completing for the competition. Charlotte Tilbury’s makeup relates to the face makeup I will be completing on the face of my model. This is because, all the makeup she has done on others for brands, models, designers and events is all a form of being beautiful. Al of the work she has created comes across as beautify and this is what I want my model’s appearance to be like. While I am completing special effects makeup on my model, I will be doing a beautiful and flawless makeup on her face. I want the face to be beautiful because I would like to show through what I see makeup as and my favourite type of makeup to complete which is a glam makeup look. Even Charlotte Tilbury’s brand shows beauty and Is able to create beauty on the model’s face. A quote said by Charlotte Tilbury relates to my makeup where she said, ‘ Beauty is not an exclusive club there are no unattractive women, just some that don’t know understand the power of makeup’. This quote relates to the makeup I will be doing because with the body looking gory and unattractive the face will be beautiful making eyes be drawn to the makeup because of the face and the power of makeup has been able to create.

Who is Rick Baker?

Rick Baker is a retired American special effects makeup artist. Rick Baker is well known for his skills in special effects where he showed this among many films he had completed during his career as a special effects makeup artist. He has been able to accomplish being nominated winning many awards for his work that he has been able to produce.

How did his Journey begin and where is it now?

When Rick Baker was younger, during his childhood years he began a fascination with movies featuring monsters in them. He also became fascinated with making his own masks to represent monsters like his love for monster movies. Rick Baker was gifted with encouraging parents who kept encouraging his passions. Rick Baker discovered the industry of makeup through watching horror and sci-fi movies and TV series where he was able to witness all of the special effects makeup in the movies and TV series. Rick Baker never did any training in an education form of makeup; however, he did attend Academy of Art University where he would study a form of art which could come to help him with makeup in his future.  Rick Baker didn’t receive any professional formal training within the industry of special effects makeup, but he did learn and advance his techniques by practicing makeup on himself to get to the position he did. A few years later after lots of practice of special effects makeup he worked on his first professional film job in the year 1973 which was the film, Schlock where he was able to gain the role of a makeup artist on this film. Prior to this job, he had worked as a puppet designer for the stop motion animation series Davey and Goliath which was done at Art Clokey Studios. Rick Baker would then go on to work on many more films creating special effects makeup and would go on to be nominated and win many awards. Rick Baker retired 28^th May in 2015 at the age of 64.

How does Rick Baker Relate into the Makeup I am doing for the Competition?

Rick Barker as a makeup artist relates to my concept of the makeup, I am doing for the Competition this is because in my makeup, I am completing different forms of special effects makeup. Where I do have a passion for gam makeup, I also have a passion for special effects makeup just how Rick Baker does. The special effects he has completed in the jobs he has done is similar to the special effects makeup I will be doing.

On the research I have previously completed, I thought that the original story of The Little Mermaid was created by Grimms Fairy Tales however, after doing some further research, it turned out, Hans Christian Andersen was who had written the original story of The Little Mermaid. Since finding this out, I am going to do research into Hans Christian Andersen and his story of The Little Mermaid, who he was and what are his type of fairy tales. It was important for me to find out that I had research into the wrong Authors as now I am able to go back and do further research where I will be able to find out more information on The Little Mermaid which will help me when I come to completing and designing the makeup for my final project.

Who is Hans Christian Andersen?

Hans Christan Anderson was a Danish author of many worldwide known and well-loved fairy tales for example the author of The Little Mermaid during the 19^th century.  His fairy tales have inspired others to create  movies, further books and plays which are still loved to this day. His fairy tales were supposed to be written for children however, most of them where scary and dark stories where they went over the mark of a traditional story that are targeted towards the younger audiences. Due to this, the stories became more fascinating to the children they were targeted towards. While he had written well known stories such as The Little Mermaid which is well known, he also wrote some less known stories which were apparent to be even scarier.

The Little Mermaid:

In the known story of the Little Mermaid, Ariel is the name of the mermaid in the story however in Hans Christian Andersen’s story, Ariel is just known as the little mermaid. He wrote the story of The Little Mermaid in 1836. This is the link to the whole story of The Little Mermaid: Hans Christian Andersen: The Little Mermaid.

Brief Version of The Little Mermaid:

In the sea, there was six mermaids who of the youngest was the quietest. They each had their own gardens under the see which they would decorate with items they had found from shipwrecks. The youngest mermaid had flowers and a statue of a boy who was beautiful. The little mermaid wasn’t interested in the life under the sea she was more interested in the land above the sea. One day, the little mermaid decides to raise to the surface where she discovered a ship with humans on there. On this ship, there was a handsome prince who the little mermaid instantly became attracted to where she felt love at first site. As the little mermaid was above the surface, a storm occurred causing the ship to get taken in by the sea causing a life-threatening event awaiting to happen to the prince. The little mermaid rushed to go and save the prince so he wouldn’t drown and brought him onto the earth surface where she saved his life. The little mermaid wanted to be with the prince so she went to go and visit the sea witch (known as Ursula in the present day). The sea witch gave the little mermaid a potion to turn her tail into human legs, however she wouldn’t be able to turn back into a mermaid once the potion was consumed, she would also experience pain every time she walked on her human legs. If the price wouldn’t fall in love and marry her and marries another woman, the little mermaid would instantly die. The sea witch demanded something from the little mermaid in return which was her voice, causing her to be mute being unable to speak and sing. The little mermaid went the surface and drank the potion giving her legs. The prince sees her and starts speaking to her but the little mermaid was unable to speak due to the sea witch taking her tongue. The prince then takes the little mermaid back to his palace where he gave her clothes and admires her beauty. At night, she often sees her sisters raise to the surface causing them sadness that she left them. The price was fond of the little mermaid however, but fell in love with another girl who the prince thought saved him the night of the shipwreck but in reality it was the little mermaid who saved him with the little mermaid being mute, she was unable to tell the prince the truth. Thinking the other girl was the one who saved him, he declared his love for the girl. Due to this, the little mermaid realised she would soon die. The little mermaid would then have to plunge into the princes heart causing his blood to touch the little mermaids feet to turn back into a mermaid tail so she wouldn’t die. She then attempted to follow this through,  but couldn’t do it throwing the dagger into the sea before diving in and she turned into sea foam.

Today, we had our first team meeting after coming back from the easter holidays. This meeting was important to have as we had the opportunity to share what work we had been able to complete over the holidays and see where we were all at with our designs, makeup and work. Regular team meetings are important to have as we are able to share our ideas and have the opportunity to ask for any help or share any struggles we may have or had. Today, as well as having a team meeting, me and Robyn decided to make a TikTok account to promote the competition and show our progression with our makeup through social media.

Team Meeting:

Having a team meeting, demonstrates teamwork. This is because it allows everyone to be able to come together and help one another to advance their makeup and ideas of what they are wanting to do. This project is a collaborative project which means we will have to collaborate as a team in order to complete this project. Stokes, K. Gaines, T. Purchase, N. Having good communication skills early on in the industry is important because if I was to go on to doing clients or any jobs in the industry I will have to have good communication skills to be able to do for example, understand what a client or boss wants or to understand if the model likes what I am applying to their face. I have demonstrated this in my work experience at the Globe and Arc by communicating to the actors my ideas for the makeup for their character and also to understand if they like what I am doing or not. When it came to my turn, I explained that I had been able to complete up to this date that I needed to do and had started work in my sketch book. I also shared that I had my costume and had ordered shells to go on the costume that were on their way.

So we could both be apart of it, we both logged into the account so we would both be able to post on there and share what everyone is doing.

Today, I decided to use up some of my 6 hours of practical work which I have to complete each week in order to complete the brief. The makeup I decided I would do today is the face makeup. I was unsure of what I wanted to do for the makeup on the face and hadn’t designed it yet but I knew I wanted the face to be beautiful with the body having special effects on there, but I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do. It was mostly that I was unsure on the eye makeup I wanted to do and the lip colour. I wanted to complete a bold red lip but with Ariel being 16 years old and my model being a similar age, a bold red lip seems to be what a person wears at an older age, and which makes them look older. For the eye makeup I knew I wanted a smokey eye but didn’t have any ideas on the shape or the colours I would want to use and also the final result. I decided I would go along and see what I end up with at the end of completing the makeup.

Work Description:

To start the makeup, I started with the eyebrows. For the eyebrows, I wanted them to be an ombre brow being lighter towards the front of the brow and darker fading into the arch and tail of the brow. I didn’t want them to be all a solid colour through out the brow as I find this makes the brows look blocked. My model has some hairs missing towards the end of her brows, so I had to draw it on. To start with the eyebrows, I used eyebrow pomade, a spoolie and an angled brush. I start, I used a cotton pad to flatten the angled brush as I find the thinner and sharper the angled brush, the earlier the brows are to do. I started by lightly drawing a line under the bottom of the brow from the front to the tail of the brow. To then do the same on the top however, I did the line from just after the front of the brow to the tail, to avoid the brow looking blocked. When I had drawn an outline, I filled in the brow making sure not to apply too much product to the brush to avoid the brows being too dark. I made sure to keep brushing the brows using a spoolie in between to keep the brow same clear. When I came to the front of the brow, I applied even less product to the brush and went in an upward motion to ensure an even amount of product was applied. Once the brow was finished, I used a small flat brush to carve the rows out, carving eyebrows out after pomade has been applied leaves the brow with a clean shape. I started with the bottom doing small strokes to the side and repeated the same to the top of the brow. To blend out the concealer, I used a dense brush to help with a full coverage finish and helps with the blend. I then finished the brow off by applying brow gel to ensure the brow would stay in place. I brushed the hairs upwards with the gel to then brush the hairs sticking up down into place. I then repeated this process on the bother side. I then moved onto the eyes. From carving the brows, concealer went onto the lid, so I had a base for the eyeshadow to hold on to which helped with the coverage of the eyeshadow. I started by using a light brown all over the lid and I applied this using a fluffy eyeshadow brush. For the second colour, I used a slightly darker brown and applied that to the inner to the middle part of the eyelid. I made sure to keep below the brow bone to open up the eyes I used a fluffy eyeshadow brush to apply the product. After I had done that, I used a darker brown and applied that colour to the middle to the end of the eye lid which I applied with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. The shape I chose was a rounded traditional smokey eye. I then used an angled brush to apply a black eyeshadow to the lash line which helped make the lashes look darker and fuller which helped the appearance of the eyes. Finally, I used a glitter blursh and applied this to the inner corner to the middle of the eye (where I applied the lighter brown) I applied this product using a dense eyeshadow brush. To finish off the eye makeup, I added mascara to the top and bottom lashes to avoid any cross contamination I used a clean spoolie and dipped it into the mascara bottle making sure not to double dip which would cause cross contamination. For the competition, I will be using false lashes but the model I completed the makeup on has long and full lashes. I then repeated this on the second eye following the same process. I then moved onto the base. I used a cream foundation to start the base. I used a dense brush to apply this onto the face. I prefer using a brush rather than a beauty blender as I find it gives a fuller coverage to the makeup and stops bacteria from entering the face. Emmahugesmakeup.com says, ‘It is physically impossible to clean a beauty blender properly, and therefore using and reusing them on several clients is a huge risk to their health.’ I then moved onto the contour, I applied this product to the forehead, jaw line, cheek bones and nose. Contour helps to snatch the face add a bronzed glow to the face. To apply the product, I used a dense brush. The next step was the cream blush. I used a pink blush and applied this to just above the cheek contour which I then applied with a dense brush also. I then applied concealer, I applied this under the eyes, chin, middle of the brows to forehead and in between the nose contour which I applied using a smaller dense brush to ensure a full coverage finish. Concealer is used to brighten up the eyes and helps to even out the makeup. I then set the makeup. To do this, I used a powder puff and loose setting powder. I applied this product under the eyes, forehead, nose, chin, upper lip and in between the cheek and jaw contour. I then used a powdered bronzer which I applied with a fluffy brush with applying to where I applied the cream contour to set that product. I then set the cream blush by using a powdered blush using a fluffy brush also. Finally, to finish off the base, I applied highlighter to the cheek bone, nose upper lip and chin. I applied this product using a smaller fluffy brush. Finally, to finish the makeup, I applied lipstick to the lips I would usually use a lip liner as well as lipstick, but I didn’t have a colour that would match the lipstick. I applied the lipstick using an angled brush to avoid cross contamination  which I used to outline the lips. I then used a disposable lip brush to fill in the lips to avoid cross contamination. Analysis:

Strengths: I was really happy with the makeup I was able to complete. I found that my strengths for this makeup was the base. I was able to give a smooth and flawless base which helped the makeup to look beautiful like I wanted it to. I also found that the brows were good also, I was able to fill in where my model had missing hairs without making the brows look unnatural.

Weakness: I think tat my weakness was the eyeshadow. I was happy with how they turned out but I think they needed to be bold and darker. With the eyeshadow not being dark enough I found that the eyeshadow became lost among the other makeup. To improve this, I will make sure to use a darker colour.

Feedback and Reflection:

 When I showed my tutor the makeup I had completed, she seemed happy with what I was able to complete. She suggested to me to make the eyeshadow darker and bolder. Once I had reflected on the makeup, I also thought next time I could add some eyeshadow to the bottom lash line.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for today, I am happy with what I was able to compete. Considering, I didn’t have a deign or any ideas I found that the makeup I completed was good and I was happy with it. I will make sure to take in my own critiques from reflecting on the makeup to help improve the makeup and also from others.

Today, I decided to use up some of my weeks practical work time of 6 hours to complete the costume. For the costume I had bought some shells to add onto the top and one of the skirts to show how my model is going to be a mermaid, and shells relate to mermaids and the sea. The shells I had purchased were offline, but they were real shells taken from the sea which helped to add to the realism. Starfish also came with the shells I had ordered which also showed that my model is a mermaid from the sea. I had never made a costume before so I was nervous if it wouldn’t turn out how I wanted but my mind was soon changed as I added the shells and starfish to the costume.

Costume Making:

To start with the costume, I started with the top. I laid the top down flat on the table, so I found be able to see clearly where I was applying the shells and star fish. I applied some hi-tac to the back of the shells, so I found be able to stick them on the top. I made sure to not apply too much glue so the glue would dry quicker and not affect the look of the costume. I started with one side of the top then the other side so I could try and make them even looking and have a similar look on each side. I wanted the whole top to be full of shells and starfish, so I even added some small ones to the straps and the bottom of the top. I made sure it was fully dry before moved the top to make sure the shells wouldn’t move out of place. I then moved onto the skirt. I didn’t want too many shells on the skirt as some were already on there. I just added some shells and star fish to the waist band of the skirt and some flat shells and star fish to the rest of the skirt. I repeated the same process as I did for the top. I was really happy with how the costume turned out. I didn’t think it would turn out how I visioned it would, but it turned out better than I thought it would. I am really happy with this as the costume matches my character perfectly and it looks beautiful. Conclusion:

In conclusion for today’s costume making, I am happy with how the costume turned out and turned out better than I expected it to do so. The only downside I that the top is a bit heavy which my cause some discomfort to my model. To ensure that doesn’t happen, I will try and long out how long my model is not in the costume before and only have it on when it’s needed to be for example while I am doing the body makeup to avoid messing up the costume or makeup I would have completed. For my first time making a costume and it went this well I would like to do more costume making in the future. I think this costume will help to advance my character by showing elements of the sea and the type of character she is and where she comes from through the costume.

Today, we had another team meeting. At this team meeting we were given the opportunity to speak about how far along we are with our projects since the last team meeting, we had in the previous week. Team meetings are important as a makeup team, to keep the team updated on where you are at with the process of this project where support may be able to be provided by others on the makeup team. The second task I completed today, was some more team collaboration. I decided, I would complete the budget for the competition with Robyn.

Team Meeting:

Today’s team meeting was similar to last weeks meeting despite this, we still need to have them to demonstrate teamwork and the ability to work as a team as we will need this in our futures as makeup artists.  Stokes, K. I shared also what I want to achieve this week, and that was to develop my face makeup with making the improvements that I needed to from my feedback and self-reflection. I wanted to be able to improve on the darkness of the eyes because when I first completed the face makeup a week prior, I did the eyes too light and needed to involve darker browns.

Team Collaboration:

Budgeting:

After we had had the team meeting, I decided I would complete the team budget with Robyn. This team budget would consist of items and products that we have ran out of in the makeup cupboard. These products and items could vary from hair bobbles to latex. These products could also be for people’s makeup that they will complete form their projects or products that just need stocking up on which could be running out or have ran out.  Stokes, K. This was important to do so everyone would have the products they need to avoid any stress or any last-minute changes on the competition day. Once we had created a list of what products are needed, I went into the makeup cupboard to see if we either already had the products with enough product inside, if any were empty and also if there was the product in there at all. This was important to do to avoid wasting any money. Once we had gathered a list of all the products and I had checked in the makeup cupboard, we started to find the products online to send the link to my tutor along with the quantity needed so she would be able to order the products. I then created a budget chart which included the product, where from, quantity, price and total price. This was important to do so it would be easily accessed by others because I made sure to put the chart in the folder for the competition.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, today I was ale to have an idea of what I will be doing this week and what I wanted to develop. I was also able to complete some more team collaboration which will help to build by teamwork skills for my future as a makeup artist and also be able to help me with this project.

Originally, I had decided that for my design I would have tentacles made out of latex and tissue, some tentacle body painting on the legs and a large cut on the stomach. After much thought, I decided that having all three of them makeups would be too much and take the effects away of everything regarding the makeup I wanted to do. The body painting was one of the reasons, this is because I am not fully confident with body painting and that is an area I need to improve on regarding my makeup skills, I thought that including a technique that I am not confident with and don’t feel that I would be able to execute this to my full potential would bring my final makeup down and loose some of my confidence. Another reason was the tentacles on the arm, I am confident with this technique, however after practicing this a couple times with the products and experimenting with different colours I could use, my vision wasn’t coming out how I wanted to and I found they looked out of place and didn’t match the aesthetic of my makeup. I still wanted to include this element of tentacles somewhere in the makeup which I then later came to an alternative which demonstrated problem solving. The final reason was the cut, the cut on the stomach is a technique I am also confident with which I practiced a couple times also. However, for the costume, I have bought a belly chain which would have got in the way of the cut which would either of ruined the cut or the jewellery. I also found that having all the special effects that I was wanting to do would be too much and they wouldn’t stand out as much as if there was just a couple.

Problem Solving:

As an alternative decision, I decided I would by some silicone prosthetics. Since I still wanted to use the element of the tentacles, I decided I would find some silicone prosthetics of a tentacle. I originally wanted to have separate tentacles to still have the wrapped round the arms however, this wasn’t available to perchance so instead I found tentacles all bunched together. I will apply this prosthetic to the arm like I wanted them to be but around the top area of the arm near the shoulder.  I also wanted some more prosthetics, so I would some that come in a pack with star fish, coral and shells. These prosthetics were perfect to have star fish as the costume I have made had lots of star fish featured on there as well as the necklace, belly chain and earrings that I have bought all have star fish on them. The star fish prosthetics I have ordered was because I was inspired by a makeup from the Glow Up competition which our competition is inspired by.  I think this decision I have made, is one that is going to benefit me when I come to doing the makeup. I will also be able to learn a new technique which will help advance me as a makeup artist.

Since I have now changed my mind regarding my design to now use silicone prosthetics of tentacles, starfish, coral and shells instead of doing the tentacles wrapped round the arms, body painting tentacles wrapped round the arms and the large cut on the stomach I need to be able to practice applying and colouring silicone prosthetics. I have ordered the prosthetics but silicone prosthetics and at the best when used only the once instead of multiple times so I would need a silicone prosthetic to practice with so the ones I have bought for the competition isn’t ruined. My tutor had some silicone prosthetics that she brought in for me and others using silicone prosthetics to practice with. The silicone prosthetics I will be using for the competition will be applied on the stop section of the arm around the shoulder area and the starfish, coral and seashells will be applied on the opposite arm.

Work Description:

Before I started on practicing with a silicone prosthetic, my tutor gave me and others on the makeup team who are using silicone prosthetics for their final makeup for the competition a demonstration on how to apply the prosthetics and ways to colour them. Once I had watched the demonstration, I went on to practice for myself. To start, I used prosade which is like a glue to stick the prosthetic to the body. I applied the prosade underneath the prosthetics where every time I applied the prosade, I used a cotton but to smooth out the air bubbles underneath the prosthetic to allow a flawless blend. I applied the prosade all under the prosthetic with repeating the smoothing process each time I applied more prosade, with then leaving the prosthetic to dry for around five minutes. Once the prosade was dry, I started to remove the excess pieces off the prosthetic. To do this I used 70% alcohol on a cotton bud and lifted up the outside excess pieces of pr prosthetic and worked the alcohol into the silicone to melt it away, which left me with a blended finish. Once I had completed this, to help with the blend I used some more 70% alcohol on a cotton bud to blend the prosthetic into the skin. The final step of this process was the colouring. To start I used alcohol activated paint using a craft brush however the colour just didn’t seem to come up, so I decided to do some problem solving and used an alternative product to colour in the prosthetic. I decided I would use grease paint. I dipped the craft brush into some 70% alcohol to help the colour blend into the prosthetic. I then used red, black and brown grease paint to colour in the prosthetic. What is Prosthetic Makeup? Analysis:

Strengths: I found that my strength for this technique was the colour. Using grease paint was a good decision so I would be able to have a full cover and a realistic finish to the prosthetic. I was able to make the wound look realistic with using grease paint over alcohol activated paint.

Weakness: I found that my weakness for this practical technique was the air bubbles, I wasn’t able to get all the air bubbles out from under the prosthetic, so it did look a bit unrealistic in that sense. I also found that a weakness of mine was the blend. Some of the blend was okay and did blend into the skin well but some of the blend was apparent.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for today, I found this practical beneficial, and I am now feeling prepared and confident now about completing this technique on the competition day. Going into making the decision of using silicone prosthetics I was nervous in case I wouldn’t be able to gain the technique but now I have and know where I need to improve I am feeling more confident and prepared and ready to take on the challenge.

In the previous week I had practiced the face makeup where I didn’t know how I wanted the face to look apart from beautiful. From doing the face makeup last week and just going with what I thought at the time, I picked up some areas of the makeup I wanted to improve on to make sure the makeup was pushed to its full potential and looks how I envision my model to look on the day. I found this beneficial as I was able to really pick apart the makeup I had completed and be able to see exactly what I wanted to change and what I wanted to keep. This is important to do after every makeup look where development is needed as I will be able to make sure I have pushed myself to my full potential and gain ideas along the way so my makeup won’t be missing any elements that may push its look and techniques to its full potential. From the last makeup I had completed, after some feedback from others and some self-reflection I found that I needed to improve on the eyes by making them darker and be able to stand out.

Work Description:

With the makeup this week, I started with the eyebrows first which I repeated the same process as I did the week before because I liked how they turned out and didn’t want them to be changed. The eye makeup was the area of the makeup which I wanted to develop to make sure me and the makeup was pushed. I started by using concealer on the lid of the eye to have a primed base for the eyeshadow to sit on comfortably with allowing a smooth application. I did this on both eyes one straight after the other so I could make sure both eyes were even and if they weren’t I would be able to notice it early on so I could change it and I did this for every step of the eye makeup. Once I had primed the eye, I added a light brow shade on the eye to have a base colour which would slightly show through to be a smoky eye. I then added a darker shade of brown on top of the one I had previously applied but making sure to not fully cover the lighter brown to ensure a smoky eye. I then went in with an even darker brown which I applied to the outside of the lid. Doing this made the eye stand out and be bold. I applied all these eyeshadows just explained with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. I then used an angled brush and applied a black eyeshadow onto the top lash line which I did the previous week which made the lashes look fuller and stand out. I don’t like eyeliner, but I decided I would bring the black on the lash line out slightly to flick out slightly to add the extra fullness appearance of the lashes. To finish off the makeup on the lid, I added a gold glitter blursh I used gold as the jewellery I have bought is all gold and need all the colours to tie in together. I wanted to improve on the darkness of the eye in the makeup I done I n the previous week so this time, I decided I would apply some colour to the waterline as I find doing this technique, allows the eye to appear fuller and stand out. I asked my model to look up so I could avoid accidentally poking them in the eye which I asked them to tell me when they needed to blink. I pulled down under the eye so I would have a safe distance from the eye pencil and the eyeball. To finish off the eye makeup, I added mascara and lashes. Starting with the mascara so the lash would have a  base to make the lashes appear fuller. To avoid cross contamination, I used a clean spoolie and dipped that into the mascara once making sure to fully coat the spoolie with the product which I then applied to the top and bottom lashes. Finally, I added false lashes to the eye. I added lash glue to the lash band which I then left to get tacky to make sure once the lash was applied, they would stay on. I used tweezers to apply the lash making sure my model kept her eyes closed so I would be able to apply the lash where it needed to be. Once I had the lash on the eye, I used the tweezers to move the bad of the lash where it needed to be to match up the lash to the natural lashes. I then completed the same base and lips as the week previous and I didn’t need to develop them. Analysis:

Strength: I was very pleased with how the makeup turned out and I was able to develop the makeup and improve on what I needed. I found that my strength was making the lashes appear fuller by doing multiple techniques of a black water line, black eyeshadow on the lash line and mascara before false lashes. By developing the eye makeup and understanding where I need to improve, I was able to be happy with the makeup.

Weakness: I found that for this makeup, I didn’t have any weakness however, there is one element I would change. I found use a fuller lash than I did to make the lashes stand out with still being able to see the eye shadow.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for today, I was able to improve what I wanted t and have a developed face makeup, and I was pushed with doing so. I will defiantly be using the techniques that I did today in my final makeup for the competition. I am so proud and happy with how the makeup I did today turned out and my confidence has now been improved and grown.

Today, I decided I would try body painting again to see if I wanted or not to feature the technique in my final makeup for the competition. Before going into doing this, I decided I would look up some inspiration on what I could do. If I decided to do the body painting, I would complete it on the legs as everywhere else on the body has some makeup featured. If I don’t decide to do body painting, on the legs I will add foundation to them to make the legs a whole even colour. When looking up inspiration, I found some images of scales being body painted with special effects featured around the scales. Work Description:

I started this makeup by warming up the wax as this product needs to be warmed up in order to have it being mouldable and easier to work with. I massaged the wax with my hands for around two minutes until I ended up with my desired consistency. I then rolled the wax out using my hands until I ended up with my desired length to make into a shape on the skin. I then applied the wax to my models arm I then used my fingers and a spatula to push the wax onto the skin to have a flawless blend on the skin which I only needed to do on the outside of the wax as the inside would be covered with blood later on in the process. Once I had completed pushing the wax into the skin, I went in with grease paint. I used a shade of light blue which I used a craft brush to apply the product on the inside of the wax. I made sure the colour was even on the skin to avoid any patches of colour when I wanted it to all be even. Once I had completed this I used loose setting powder to set the grease paint to avoid the colour smudging into the next colour I would use. I then used a darker blue to the one I had previously applied and used a thin craft brush to draw the scales. I was struggling to get the right shape of the scales so my model helped me to get the right shape of the scales and to have them all even. I wanted to scales to have some shimmer to them, so I added a white highlighter over the top of the scared to give an iridescent effect. Finally, I added the blood, to do this I used a chunky blood and a spatula to apply the blood all over the wax. Analysis:

Strength: I found that my strengths for this makeup was the shape I created with the wax. I didn’t want the shape to be even which was ended up as oval with some dents in throughout the shape. The shape helped to create the effect of ripped skin as the shape wasn’t a perfect ovel.

Weakness: I didn’t like this makeup I completed at all. I am not confident with body painting which made the makeup not look right. I found my weakness was the body painting and I need to improve on this technique, but I will not be doing this in my final project.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I have come to my final decision and I will not be featuring body painting in my final project. I don’t like the way it looks and I think it will look out of place on my model when all the makeup is on there also. I understand how it would be good to have this technique but I really don’t like it and bot happy with this technique and also the way it looks. If I add another makeup technique to my makeup, it will look like too much and not look right.

Today, I decided I wanted to practice applying and colouring prosthetics again as I wanted to be able to improve on what I needed to after my self-reflection. I wanted to do this so I would be able to be confident with applying prosthetics as I would be able to be as confident as I could be when I come to applying the prosthetics I have bought for the competition as I am only able to use those prosthetics once. The part of this technique I wanted to improve on was the blend.

Improvement on blend:

Products Used:

Work Description:

I started by applying the prosade onto the arm under the prosthetic which this time, I made sure to use small amounts at a time so the blend would be easier to complete for achieving a flawless blend. I used a cotton bud to apply the prosade. Every time I applied the prosade, I used a cotton bud to smooth out all the air bubbles which will create more realism when the prosthetic was completed. I repeated this process along the whole prosthetic ensuring all the air bubbles were smoothed out and weren’t visible. Once I had finished applying the prosade, I then started to blend and remove the excess parts of the prosthetic. To do this, I used 70% alcohol and a cotton bud. I lifted up the excess parts of the prosthetic and applied the alcohol to the parts I wanted gone and did this process the whole way round the prosthetic. Once I had removed the excess pieces of the prosthetic I then used some more 70% alcohol on a cotton bud and blended the outside of the main part of the prosthetic and blended that more into the skin to ensure a flawless blend. Inside a Prosthetic Makeup Artist’s Toolkit says 'Silicone – Probably the most common material used for prosthetic makeup is silicone. It’s durable and moulded pieces can be as thin as a few layers of skin, so the results are very life-like.'

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the prosthetic I had completed today had a better and flawless blend compared to the last one I completed the week previous week. From practicing this again, I was able to gain more confidence for when I come to applying the prosthetics for the competition. I will like to practice this technique for a last time before the competition so that i can ensure my confidence on the day as i will be working with prosthetics on a bigger scale size with applying to a different area on the body.

Today, I decided I would practice the pin curls again so I will be able to see if I wanted to definitely want to do the curls in this way. From practicing the pin curls two times previously, I have found that can be unpredictable in how they could turn out once the pins are taken out of the hair.  Pin Curls: A Vintage Hair Styling Technique Explained | ShunSalon says ‘Pin curls are a classic hair setting technique that creates bouncy curls that last for days.’ Sometimes the pin curls can come out bouncy and have volume to them however another time I did them they came out like a bouncy blow dry. I do want to include this technique however if they are not guaranteed to turn out bouncy and have volume to them, I will just use the curling wand without pinning them and I will complete the hair last once all the makeup is completed so the curls wont drip and they will remain curly and have volume. I don’t want to just give up after doing them twice, so I decided to do them for a third time to be sure of how I want to have the hair curled.

Work Description:

I started by brushing the hair to ensure all possible knots and tangles were removed from the hair to make the process of the curling and pinning the hair easier with no interferences happening. I brushed the hair from the ends going up to the roots once the ends were brushed. I did this because if the hair is brushed from the roots down to the ends, that will put pressure on the ends of the hair as it will cause breakage to the hair if the ends had any knots or tangles.  The Do’s and Don’ts of Brushing: How to Prevent Hair Breakage and Spli says ‘Brushing from the roots down in one long stroke can worsen tangles and lead to breakage. Always start at the ends and work your way up. I then started with the front pieces of the hair as I would be putting these pieces of hair in a roller as I want them to have a slight curl while having a flick in the hair and the roots to be volumed. I then started with the rest of the hair. I completed the pin curls on River, she has hair extensions so I decided to start with the crown of the head where her natural hair was, I did this so I could do the hair in sections and avoid any tangles. This was also important to do as Rivers natural hair and extensions are different lengths and this would make it harder to do when the hair is on the curling wand. When applying the hair onto the curling iron, I started by wrapping from the top of the hair going downwards to hopefully end up with a full head of bouncy curls from the roots. I left the hair on the curling wand for around 30 seconds to ensure the hair would be fully curled with the heat being 180 degrees with it being the middle setting on the curling iron so it would cause less heat damage as I didn’t have any heat protectant spray which I will ensure to bring with me on the day of the competition to have minimal heat damage to the hair to avoid split ends. I then took the hair off the curling wand and gathered it in my hand to the roll underneath going upwards towards the root of the hair to them pin in the hair using a flat clip. I then repeated this process among the whole crown section of the head to then spray a little hair spray to help with the setting process. The next section of the head is where her hair extensions started. The hair extensions are thicker resulting on having to do smaller sections with leaving the hair on the curling wand for a longer amount of time. I repeated the same process as I did on the crown of the head with just extending the length of time the hair was on the wand for with pinning the hair in the same way. I made sure to keep doing the hair in even sections to avoid having the hair mixed up and not pinning and curling properly. Finally, once I had finished the curling and pinning process, I went over the hair with a hair dryer on the cool setting to help with setting the curls and help with the cooling process. I then finished off with this part of the process with a light spray of hairspray to also help to set the curls. Finally, it was time to remove the pins and reveal the curs. I started with the hair roller and this turned out well with giving the lift and volume I wanted. I then started to remove the pins, but a problem occurred because I hadn’t curled River’s hair extensions and natural hair together, they weren’t well blended. This gave me the opportunity to do some problem solving so I found a wide tooth comb and brushed each curl which helped to blend the curls together. Finally, I did one last spray of hairspray to set the curls into place.

Analysis:

Strengths: I found that my strengths for this hairstyle was the pinning of the curls. I was able to securely pin the curls into place onto the head without them falling out or getting tangled with one another. I think this was the case because I went in sections starting from the crown of the head down to the bottom of the head.

Weakness: I found that my weakness for this hairstyle was the blend of the extensions from the natural hair. I was able to solve the problem to an extent, but it was still apparent on which parts of the hair where the natural hair and which was the extensions. To solve this problem if I cur River’s hair in the future would be to incorporate the extensions and natural hair together to help with the blend between the two hairs.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I have decided I won’t pin the hair after it is curled as it can be unpredictable on how they will turn out. Instead of pinning the hair, I will just curl the hair with a curling wand which I will do once the makeup is completed and the costume is on to prevent the curls from dropping and going like beach waves.

On Tuesday, I asked my model to come in today so I would be able to practice the makeup, hair and so she could try the costume on. I wanted to do this so I would be able to practice on her face as everyone has different facial features and as she will be my model for the competition, I wanted to be able to have a go at the makeup on her so I will be feeling prepared and confident on the day of the competition. However, last minute on the Wednesday night she told me that she couldn’t come on the Thursday, so I now had to improvise and do what I wanted to do on someone on the makeup team. However, due to this I was unable to do everything I wanted to do for example, her trying on the costume I was unable to do as it would only be worn on her and sizes selected for her body type. Due to this I could only practice the face makeup again which I will be doing glam makeup. This situation demonstrated problem solving and will help me with my future in the makeup industry as I might get last minute cancellations and would have to work around that. However, there are effective strategies to mitigate these challenges. We’ll go over ways of handling last-minute appointment cancellations, ensuring they have minimal impact on your business.’ I didn’t let this affect me so I decided I would ask Robyn if I could practice on her and she agreed. I didn’t need to develop the face makeup I just wanted to be able to have the opportunity to practice on my model prior to the competition. I was still able to practice the makeup and I am really grateful for Robyn for stepping in and allowing me to practice on her. I was still able to practice the makeup again to ensure my confidence put I would have preferred to be able to practice on my model as she would be the person I am doing the makeup, hair and wearing the costume for the competition.

Ripped Throat Design (Neck Chart):

Today, I began my mood board. The book Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry says, ‘mood board- a collage of images, text, sketches and material that communicates your ideas for a given theme’. This mood board will be place behind my model whilst the makeup and hair I have completed is being judged. This mood board will have to tell the story and show through who and what my model is supposed to be. On the mood board it is essential to include, pictures of your previous work, a face chart and any other designs if wished to do so, pictures of the character/similar to the one being completed, colour pallet and possibly some texture or something 3D.  mood board can be used in many ways for example when designing, planning or even in this case to show off the makeup.  What is a Mood Board — Definition & Examples Explained says, ‘Mood boards can be used as inspiration for any kind of creative project, from designing a movie set to creating a work of art. To understand the moodboard meaning and their value, let’s take a look at the mood board definition.’ They also say, ‘The main advantage of using a mood board is that it helps you quickly organize all of your thoughts into one cohesive package. It gives everyone involved in the project — including yourself — a clear view of what direction the project should take and where it should end up.’ The mood board I will complete will be sized A1 to ensure I will have enough space to add everything I need to as well as some extra pieces. The book Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry says,’ use A1 sized card to produce your mood boards, so you have plenty of space to showcase your ideas’. I will also include a detailed background that will also show off who and what type of character I will be transforming my model into. Since she is a mermaid, I have decided I will complete a wave from the sea as my background which will show off where my character is from which is the sea. The book Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry says, ‘ Mood boards are a great way to express ideas visually, and they can show off your creative side.’

Choosing out my Mood Board:

When choosing out my mood board, I knew I wanted a sturdy and good quality one. I didn’t want the mood board to flop when it was stood up so I made sure to pick out a good quality one.  I chose a mood board that had some foam material in the centre which will help the mood board to start up right when it is stood up. The foam added some extra support for the mood board making it a good quality piece.

Background:

For the background I wanted it to also show through who my character was as well as all the images and extra pieces I will include. So I decided I would create a wave from the sea using acrylic paints. Since my model is going to be The Little Mermaid having a wave from the sea as my background will be the perfect look and show through who she is.

Ripped Throat:

I decided as an extra piece I wanted to create the ripped throat that I will be including in my makeup and add it to the mood board as a 3D piece and also to show some texture. I think this was a good element to add to my mood board as I am showing through one of the elements of my makeup and directly how it is going to appear as on the neck. Doing this will help to show through my story line and also what I will be including in my makeup. I will also add on some images of the ripped throat from when I have practiced the ripped throat previously which will also help to show through what the piece I have made is supposed to be.

Shells:

I have also added some shells to my mood board which I used the same ones I did to make my costume. I did this as it will show my costume though the mood board and will also help to show through what type of character my model is supposed to be. Adding the shells also helped to add some texture and 3D effect to the mood board.

Face Chart:

I added a face chart to my mood board in order to show through what my makeup will look like on the day. Adding a face chart to a mood board is important as this will help to show through my design process and help to add to the idea of what the makeup will end up looking like. I will also include some images of what the makeup has looked like when I have practiced to help show how my design matches the practice I have completed.

Colour Pallet:

I have included a colour pallet to my mood board which will show and demonstrate what colours I will be mostly using in the overall makeup I will complete. The colour pallet of my makeup will be a mix of browns and red as the costume has brows in, the eyeshadow also does, I have included a red lip and the base makeup is bronzed.

Images:

I have had the images printed professionally rather than just on an at home printer to ensure all my mood board is good quality. Doing this also helped to bring out the full potential quality of the pictures showing every extra detail through them. The images I have included is, images of Ariel, Ariel and Ursula, practice pictures and my colour pallet.

Title:

For the title I added the name of my character and the theme of the competition. I wanted my characters name to come first and then have the theme name. I did this because I wanted my characters name to stand out the most which will help to show and tell who the charter is.

The first step of my mood board was to create the background. The first step of my mood board was to create the background. For the background, I wanted it to be relatable to my character and not just one solid colour as I find that wouldn’t have as much detail and wouldn’t show off my character as much if I just had for example a solid blue background. Work Description:

To start will I painted the whole mood board to be a shiny light blue to represent the sky that the wave will be in front of. I used a wide paint brush to help speed up the process and the bigger the brush the more area of the mood board I would be able to cover in one brush stroke. I made sure to go in the same direction which was going sideways. I did this to prevent any steak lines and to ensure the colour would be the same colour throughout. I had to then let this dry before I could move onto the next part of the painting. To speed up the process I used a hairdryer on the cool setting so I would be able to move onto the next step quickly. The next step is to paint the waves. To do this I used different shades of blue acrylic paint to do this. To apply this, I used a small piece of cardboard where I applied a generis amount of paint to and then I scraped it onto the paper. I did this so it would create texture to the mood board. I repeated this process using different shades of blue to create a layered shadow effect to the wave. Once I had completed this I let the paint to dry overnight instead of using a hairdryer as I didn’t want the lifted texture of the waves to flatten, I wanted them to stay up right to how I had applied the paint. Once I had let the paint dry overnight, I then moved onto the white part of the wave like bubbles I the water.  To do this I used a sponge to create texture and the appearance of the water bubbling up. I added some white acrylic paint to the spouge and dabbed it on around the top of the wave where it curled slightly under. Once that had dried, I used some white glitter acrylic paint to finish off the look and add some magical elements to the painting as my character is a mermaid.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I am proud of how my background of my mood board turned out and came out exactly how I visioned it to. I think this background of my mood board will help to show through what my character is.

The next part of my mood board was to create the 3D ripped throat. I wanted to include this as I am able to show through one of the technical elements of the makeup I will be completing on my model. I will also include images of the ripped that I have previously completed to show through what the 3D  piece is supposed to be and what it is representing. The whole idea behind the ripped throat is that Ursula has attacked Ariel and has used her bare hands to rip Ariels voice out of her throat. Having this element included on my mood board will show through a part of my storyline which is essential to match the brief as it is to show as much as my charters and their story through the mood board. The Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry says, ‘mood boards should be eye-catching and tell the creative story of where ideas originated and how they have led you to come to your final design.’

Work Description:

To start thins process I used some carboard and wrapped the masking tape around the cardboard which these would represent the bones from the throat. For the area of ripped skin, I repeated the same process, but this time used cardboard and masking tape on a bigger scale. Once I had completed this, I moulded what would be the ripped skin into place with then sticking it on the red card using PVA glue. I then repeated the same process with the bones with then leaving them both to dry overnight before I would be able to move onto the next part of the process. Once I had let the glue dry it when then time to move onto the colour. I used a red acrylic paint mixed with a slight bit of black acrylic paint to darken the red. I then used a paint brush to apply the paint to the piece. I applied the paint on thick as I wanted some texture to be there like chunky blood. I then repeated this process leaving time to dry in between to avoid interfering with the texture and layers I had already created. Once all the paint had been applied multiple times and dried, I finished off by adding modge podge to the whole piece to give a glossy effect to make the blood appear fresh.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for the ripped throat, I am proud of how it turned out and will really be able to show through what the ripped throat has represented. This will really be able to show through what my character had been through in order to get this injury.

I then completed some team collaboration and teamwork. I did this by setting up the water and snacks that had been bought for the models and makeup artists to have during the day. With also helping to move the tables in the room around to create one big one in the middle of the room for a place for people to put bags, coats, mood boards and any other belongings that have been brought with people on the day. I then cleaned down the whole table with disinfectant as there would be food and water going on there so having a sanitary environment is essential.

Today, was the day of the competition which I had been prepping and preparing for over the past 3 months, and it had finally come after all the work and effort I had put into it. Due to this, I wanted to make the most of this day and make everything I had been working for worth it.

My Appearance:

A makeup artists appearance is a really important part of being a makeup artist as we are a part of a industry all about hygiene and beauty and we need to make sure we show and represent that at all times. My first thing was making sure I had a shower the night before and the morning of to ensure I had freshly cleaned hair and to make sure I was demonstrating good hygiene. I then made sure that I wore black on the day as this is essential as a makeup artist in many ways but in this case with it being a competition, it would be the reason of if any makeup dropped on my clothes it wouldn’t be as noticeable to others around me which helps to show a put together and clean appearance. It also helps demonstrate professionalism with the colour being modest and not too loud.  Makeup Artists Wearing Black So Often — The Jungle Play says, ‘another prominent reason why professional makeup artists tend to wear black colour so often is to look neat and clean. Being in a profession of makeup where you make people look flawless requires you to look flawless as well. If you wear white or lighter tones while creating different makeup looks, then it might not look cleaner. The black colour is convenient to wear where you can simply work on vibrant colours every day and still manage to look neat and clean until the end of the day.’ I also made sure to tie my hair back while I was completing the makeup. This is because it helps with hygiene purposes which helps to prevent any loose hairs falling into any of the makeup products and also shows off a professional appearance to others around.

Heath and Safety:

I had to make sure that health and safety was a main priority of this day also. Health and safety is an important practice to make sure happens in a makeup room environment and especially when outside people are coming in as models. Health and safety can be demonstrated in many ways. One of the heath and safety measures I demonstrated was when using heat tools, when they were cooling down, heating up and being used, I made sure to make sure they were well away from my model and the makeup artist and her model to avoid them accidentally burning themselves on the curling wand. Another health and safety I demonstrated was making sure my products, bay and tools were cleaned thoroughly to avoid the risk of cross contamination. Cross contamination can occur if tools, products and bays aren’t cleaned properly which could cause my model to develop for example blemishes on her skin. I made sure to clean my bay down with surface cleaner and alcohol to have ensured a thorough cleanliness to my bay and all products being placed on there. I also made sure my hair was tied back to ensure none of my hair would fall into the products or onto my model this also demonstrates professionalism.

The Day:

Before I arrived at collage (the venue of the competition) I drove over to pick up my model. As myself being the makeup artist and bringing in a model from outside the makeup team, I wanted to make sure all my models needs where met and I thought that giving her a lift instead of making her make her own way there, it would show my gratitude towards her and help ease her into what she would be having done on her that day. This shows strong model care. It is important as a makeup artist to ensure all of the models needs are met during their time being your model. Once I arrived at collage, I showed my model to my bay which I had set up the day before and allow her to get comfortable before I would begin the makeup. Before I started the makeup, I asked my model if she wanted anything such as water by her side for while I was doing the makeup and informed her if she wanted to take a break we could as she was sat in the chair for multiple hours and she would need multiple breaks and fresh air. Once I had informed my model of the information she needed to know, I then began the makeup. As I was using prosthetics, I decided I would begin them first as they would take up the most amount of time and I didn’t want to risk running out of time with only little time left to complete the prosthetics (evaluation on a separate post). In between applying and colouring each prosthetic I asked my model if she would like to take a break as this process is time consuming. Once all the prosthetics had been applied and coloured it was then lunch time so I asked my model what she wanted and brought it to her instead of her going to get it herself this again demonstrated strong model care and making sure all her needs were met during her time being my model. I then moved onto her face makeup. (Evaluation on separate post). I decided to do the face makeup second as sometimes the eye makeup doesn’t go to plan first try and the face was one of the elements of the whole makeup look that I wanted to stand out as I had designed it to be very bold by using a red lip, dark eyes and a strong bronzed contoured base. During the face makeup process I kept asking her if she wanted a break for example once the eyes were completed. As I was doing the face makeup with a large time gap from the finishing time, I made sure to securely set the face using two types of setting spray and doing this before the base makeup was applied, after all the cream products hand been applied and also when the makeup was finished. I then moved onto the ripped throat. For this makeup I needed my model to put on the top of the costume I did this to avoid getting any makeup on the costume and to also as the costume was heavy due to all the shells and most likely to be uncomfortable, I only asked her to put on the top. Since the top needed tying around the neck and back I helped my model by tying the costume as that would be unsuccessful on her own to do. I then began to complete the ripped throat special effects makeup. Once that part of the makeup was complete, I started on the hair which was curled hair with a plat crown with hair rings attached to the plat going round the crown of the head. Finally, I then got the rest of the costume out for my model and gave her it to get changed into which I came with her in case she needed any help. I then went back down to the makeup room to put everything away off my bay and clean it up. I then had to leave the room while the judging happened as I couldn’t see what was possibly being said and what was going on. I then went back into the room and the winners were announced. I then went to take the makeup off my model. She wanted to the face makeup on so I just removed the ripped throat and prosthetics. We didn’t have any prosade remover so I used baby oil to try and avoid any bad pain of the prosthetic coming off so I massaged the baby oil into her skin and around the prosthetic. When they had been removed her had some redness so I got a gentle moisturiser and massaged it into her skin to sooth it.

Conclusion:

In conclusion from today, I am very proud of the makeup I was able to complete but also grateful for the experience. I was able to work on my time management by planning out my time to then successfully be left with just over an hour spare which is a big achievement for me as I do struggle with time management and taking a long amount of time on the makeup. Today made all the planning, process and stress worth it so I am proud and grateful. I was able to demonstrate all the essential skills to be a makeup artist such as punctuality, time management and strong model care.

When I came to begin the makeup, I wanted to start with completing applying and colouring the prosthetics. My reasoning behind deciding to do this technique first was because they can be time consuming and I have only practiced the prosthetics previously on a small size when the ones I have used for the competition are larger than the ones I used to practice on. The prosthetics I have chosen to use for the competition is tentacles to represent Ursula where I will also use the colour of Ursulas tentacles. I have also chosen to use prosthetics in the shapes of a starfish and coral. My reasoning behind using prosthetics was to be able to replace the techniques such as the cut stomach with another technique that was more advanced. The Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry book says, ‘Depending on the body art look a makeup artist is trying to achieve, prosthetic pieces- such as noses and chins- can be very useful. Prosthetics can be made out of gel foam, silicone or latex. They all give realistic results but the use of prosthetics depends on the budget and the overall appearance.’

Work Description:

To start this technique, I decided I would start with the tentacle prosthetics as these were a larger size and I wanted to be able to get this one done first as it would be time consuming when applying due to the size and also the colouring as this one has more details that need to have close attention paid to whilst colouring it. I started by removing the prosthetic from the packaging to take out and measure on my model’s shoulder as this is where I would be placing the prosthetic. I wanted to make sure it would fit on my model’s shoulder because if the worst case happened that I didn’t, I would be able to have a see where else I could place the prosthetic elsewhere on the body. Once I had measure it against my models shoulder, I started to apply the prosade to my models skin for the prosthetic to stick onto. I applied the prosade using a cotton bud. Pros-Aide - The Original - | Kryolan - Professional Make-up says, ‘Pros-Aide is a special-effects adhesive for make-up artists by ADM Tronics. This glue is a preparation with exceptionally great adhesion, and is used for adhering foam appliances and other 3-dimensional parts, and for smoothing out transition zones.’ Once the prosade was applied to the skin, applied the prosthetic over the prosade and smoothed out all the air bubbles using a clean cotton bud to improve the appearance of the blend into the skin. I then repeated this process on the whole prosthetic making sure to have a smooth application in this part of the process. I managed to get all the air bubbles out but then when it came to the blending part of the process, I ran into a problem. I started by applying some 70% alcohol onto a cotton bud and went around just after the lip of the prosthetic to blend it not the skin and remove the lip. I started at the top of the prosthetic where it was blending well but then as I started to move down the prosthetic, it wouldn’t come off and blend with only the top of the lip coming off leaving the bottom layer on the lip still there. I think it was down to the quality of the prosthetic and how they were made. I then decided to keep going and I would trim off the excess at the end of the whole prosthetic applying process before I added the colour. Once I had cut the excess off making sure to be careful to not accidentally catch my model with the scissors. Doing this helped with the blend a lot and I was able to demonstrate problem solving due to this situation occurring. Once I had completed the application process, I then moved onto the colouring. I used black, purple and white grease paint to do this. I started with using the black and this would go where the suckers weren’t to show how the tentacles were twisted together and to show the back of Ursulas tentacles. I used a thin craft brush in order to colour the prosthetic and allow myself to have control and precision over where the colour would be applied because if I had used a bigger sized brush, I wouldn’t have as much control on the prosthetic that needed detail and certain colours in certain places. If I got any product where I didn’t want it to be, I used a cotton bud which caused the product to come straight off where I didn’t want it to be. The next colour I used was purple and this would be going around and on the area where the suckers were on. I wanted this to be a lilac shade of purple so to do this I took a purple grease paint and mixed it with the white in order to create lilac. Alcohol activated paints are usually used on prosthetics but however, when I used this during a time practicing prosthetics, I decided I didn’t like it and prefer grease paint. How To Color Prosthetic Wounds - Ben Nye Says, ‘ Alcohol-Activated Palettes, and blood products are valuable tools to aid you in this process.’ I then used a small craft brush again to add the colour to the prosthetic to ensure control over where the product was going. I then moved onto the suckers. For the suckers, I used purple as I wanted them to be darker than the base of the tentacles. To add the product to the suckers I again used a small craft brush. I had then completed the tentacle prosthetics which took me around 45 minutes- 1 hours.  I then moved onto the starfish and coral prosthetics. I used two star fish and one coral prosthetics as I didn’t want to overload my model as too much may effect the end result. I repeated the same application process on these prosthetics as I did previously and coloured the same apart from I did a different technique for the colouring. On both the star fish I mixed the base colour with white to the centre of the starfish and blended it out into the base colour to give a ombre and light reflecting effect.

Analysis:

Strengths: I found that my strength for this technique was the colouring. I this this was because I used a small craft brush to apply the colour which helped to give me a detailed finished results. This being one of my strengths gave me confidence and was able to develop and push the appearance of the prosthetics. I found that doing an ombre effect on the starfish also helped to add a detailed touch to the star fish.

Weakness: I found that my weakness for this technique was the application. I think it was down to the quality of the prosthetics and the way the seller had made them which affected the blend of the prosthetics. The ones I used to practice on had a successful blend each time I practiced but however with these prosthetics the blend came out poor even through I did the same process this time also.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for this technique I used in my makeup for the competition I found that it was a good technique to incorporate and to be able to advance my skills in this technique. I was able to add an extra push and development to my design by choosing to use prosthetics.

The next makeup I chose to do was the face makeup. I did realise how this timing was early on in  the day and it may not look as good as it first did when it was completed because there had been a time gap to when the makeup was applied compared to when it will be being judged. I did take this into account, and I made sure to set the makeup really well multiple times and using two different setting sprays to ensure a strong hold of the makeup. I had practiced this makeup many times and I am very confident in the technique of glam makeup which I had chosen to complete and this is my favourite technique to do.

Work Description:

As I had completed this makeup many times, I was really confident, and I followed the same steps I did in the practices I had completed multiple times before the day of the competition. The only thing I did differently was the setting of the makeup. I made sure to apply setting spray before applying the makeup as I didn’t have a foundation to match the primer as in a practice prior, I used some primer with the foundation and it caused a separation due to the different bases (water and silicon) so I decided not to risk it and just use a ‘prep and set’ setting spray as a primer.  Water-Based vs. Silicone-Based Primers: What's the Difference? | Makeup.com says , ‘it is crucial to make sure your foundation is compatible with your primer, it can also be helpful to understand how water- and silicone-based primers differ and individually benefit the skin.’ A silicon primer should be used with a silicone foundation and a water base primer should be used with a water base foundation not mixing the two as this will cause a separation. I made sure to set the makeup at the start, after all the cream products were and when the makeup was all complete to ensure a long lasting face makeup.

Analysis:

Strengths: I found that my strengths was the eyes. I was able to do these in a fast time period and they went right and how I wanted them first try. I was able to create a beautiful and bold smoky eye which really made the eyes stand out and using the brows went well with the red lip I used causing an eye-catching makeup look. I was able to accentuate my models facial features with the makeup I chose to complete.

Weakness: I found that my weakness was the bronzer. I did perform this technique really well however, I wish I had used either a darker bronzer or a slight bit more product to give an extra bronzed look to my model.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for this makeup look I am really proud with how it turned out. All the practice I did of this makeup was worth it and paid off as I was able to complete this makeup with confidence and in fast timing than I usually do. I completed this makeup in around 45 minutes which is an achievement for me as I do need to work on time management, and I proved that I am able to manage my time and be able to be quicker at makeup.

The final step of the makeup process for this competition was the ripped throat. I was really confident with this technique and the products I was using as I have done this technique, practiced and used these products many times before and I was able to go into this with full confidence and able to complete it in a quicker time period. In my practices, I had been able to complete this technique in around 45 minutes and I wanted to aim for taking less time, this time round.

Work Description:

For this, I completed the exact same steps using the exact same products as I did in all my practices previously. I decided to do this last as it is an uncomfortable makeup as one of the makeup artists on the makeup team that I practiced this makeup on said that, so I didn’t want my model to have it on for a long amount of time do cause any discomfort. Doing this last will also avoid the blood drying which would give a less realistic effect to it. I was also able to do this makeup in 30 minutes which I was able to do what I aimed to do by beating a time of 45 minutes which this makeup has taken in the past during practices.

Analysis:

Strengths: I found that my strengths for this makeup was being able to replicate what I had done in my practices and being able to copy my design. This makeup came out exactly how I wanted and I was proud of what I was able to complete.

Weakness: After my model had been laughing, one of the bones started to come off. I could have improved this by using a base glue such as lash glue before I applied the latex for extra hold on the bones to avoid this happening.

Conclusion:

In conclusion for this makeup look, I am proud and happy with how it turned out. I was able to replicate my design onto the body the exact same. Having practiced this technique multiple times I was able to have full confidence and know I would be able to complete it to my full potential.

The last thing I did was the hair. I wanted to do this last as because I was curling the hair, I didn’t want to risk the curls dropping as I wanted them to be bouncy. I had practiced the hair as pin curls however, I decided not to follow through with doing pin curls as they are time consuming and unpredictable on who they will end up turning out. I know this because, I have practiced them 3 times previously to the competition, and once time they turned out like a bouncy blow dray and the others they were bouncy and full but not as I wanted them to be so I decided I would just curl the hair normally using a curling wand.

Work Description:

I completed the curls in the hair as you would normally curl hair with repeating the same process as I did with the pin curls but without pinning them once the hair was curled using a curling wand. In my design I said I would do tiny, unnoticeable plats in the hair to attach some hair rings to however, I decided to do something different. I decided to take the two front pieces of my model’s hair and do small plats in them on each side. Once I had done that, I took both the plats and I tied them using a clear hairband at the back of the crown of the head. I then attached the hair rings through the plat ensuring they are even on both sides (I did 6 on each side). I decided to change this as I was worried if the hair rings wouldn’t be able to be seen and get lost in her hair, doing it this way was a better decision as the hair rings were visible and also kept her hair away from her face which meant more of the face makeup would be seen and eyes drawn to.

Analysis:

Strengths: I found that my strengths for this hair style was the plat. Having the idea to use the to front pieces and pull them back to be like a head band, really case the makeup to be seen more and allowed an elegant hairstyle to happen.

Weakness: I found that my weakness was the curls lasting. They did drop slightly and not as bouncy as I wanted them to be. To ensure this doesn’t happen again, I will use volumizing powder on the roots of the hair to give extra volume and bounce to the hair.  

Conclusion:

In conclusion I am proud of how the hair turned out and I really enjoyed doing the hair as I enjoy doing it. I will make sure in the future to remember the critics I have given myself to get the best set of curls I can.
