from the late months of 1941 -1944, 15,000 children were deported to Terezin, an example camp for Jewish prisoners. The remaining children stuffed the poems into the walls of their confined rooms along with writings and drawings. after the liberation of the camp, all the poems were gathered into a book, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, to represent the pain those children went through. this book is still remembered to this day and can be seen in plays, memorial websites, and books. We must continue to remember all the poems and authors in the project because of all the pain and loss the victims of the Holocaust had to endure.

Before reading On A Sunny Evening by Micheal Flack, the title alone gives us reason to believe we will be reading about a sunset. however, after reading we can take a deeper look into the poem.

during Micheals time at the Auschwitz camp, Micheal starts writing about his experience of the repeated days and finding the good in bad in order to be hopeful. while reading the first sentence, Micheal starts describing his repeated days in confinement but also describing how there is beauty in the dusty threshold. in sentence 2 is when we notice a shift in tone when Micheal very distincly explains that the children will not soak in dispair but rather concede their bouyant, optimistic, and hopefull feelings despite everything going on. Micheal describes in sentence 3 a body ache due to the veil of gold, representing the urge to discover more of the world and the feeling of pain because he is in confinment. Observing how nature thrives in the entrapment expanded his thinking to wonder what the world outside is like, resulting in giving the children something to look foward to in the future. as the children wait for a new opportunity and remain hopefull observing the smaller meaningfull things such as the crowns of the flowers in the trees drives their hopes and faith. the children are now eager to explore and want to ¨fly¨ instead of loosing hope. during the last sentence the bloomed flowers in ¨barbed wire¨ challenges the childrens determination against helplessness, however, a sudden burst of determination and hope pull through to represent their urge to continue living.

after taking a look into the meaning of the poem, we can start interpreting the figurative language Micheal has included. we can identify a lot of different figurative language used but symbolism stood out the most because of its consistency throughout the poem. nature is used as the symbolism for Micheals thoughts, for in the beginning nature was very ¨gnarled and old¨ when the tone was gloomy and depressing but at the end nature was now beautiful when the tone is more hopeful and we begin seeing his refusal to die/ give up, symbolizing the transformation from negative to positive thoughts. another writing choice that stood out to me was the word choice used to illistrate the connection the author has with nature, for example, using the word ¨gold¨ twice to describe the bright sun rays, i think the author used the word gold twice because it displays the beauty outside the camp, the fear of leaving camp, and fear of reality.

I think that the authors tone is somber yet hopefull because the repeating and gloomy days is his description on how he is feeling, and then quickly changed to hessitant because he doesnt know if he wants to experience the outside world and face reality. however, the children overcome this hesitancy and look to nature for guiding their hope.

to add on, from stanza 2 to 3 we really see the shift in the way Micheal writes his poem, the stanzas are getting longer, more punctuation, and change in tone from gloomy to hopefull to represent change in meaning giving us reason to believe that every obsticle they encountered only gave them more reasons to be hopefull.

when taking a second look at the title after interpreting the poem, we have reason to believe that the title reflects irony because, it cant be sunny at night/evening. this leaves us to believe that he found a way to be hopefull despite all the trauma endured.

the poem addresses the holocaust along with the butterfly project with the hopes of expressing the childrens hope and will to survive, however, only 100 kids survived the camp of terezin. finally, we can put together all the new information and develop a theme, even within the darkest times you can discover faith and hope.

Our Video Poem is titled ´On a Sunny Evening¨. This video combines videos and pictures representing how even in the most helpless times you can discover faith and hope. We chose the song dandelions because of the way it really sets the tone of the poem. We set the voice narration in a mellow, slower tone to express the theme that within darkness and despair can come beauty and light. It is metaphorical in a way showing that within the harder times hope can always be found.

one thing we want the viewers to notice is the effort we put into filming and interpreting to put the poem into a metaphorical and literal visual presentation. however, finding time and places to record the visuals really affected the aesthetics and metaphorical meaning throughout the video.

We are satisfied with the product and how the video turned out, because of all the interpetation needed to create the video.

Michael Flack was deported to Auschwitz and had forced time there before getting deported again. He survived the Holocaust leaving behind all his writing for someone else to find and eventually became apart of the Butterfly Project. This influienced our decisions on our video, because it helps put more feeling and meaning into the video for example, a butterfly symbolizes the authors life before war and the struggle to confront reality . The butterflies at the end of our video are reflecting upon the butterfly project and how this poem ¨never dies¨ illistrating how the holocaust can be remembered and cherished throughout generations while also illistrating the severe hardship the author has felt.

The poem illistrates how the children and people found themselves faithful during their hopeless times witch was represented in the video by lighting bolts because the lighting symbolizes the hope and the dark clouds symbolize helplessness. This helped us develop our theme that even within the most helpless times you can find faith and hope to persue through the dark.

Poetry serves an an important aspect of history because it retells the authors experiences with their thoughts and feeling without being literal, and retells the story so well that these experiences continue to be remembered in the future.

the philosophical outlook on this poem is a combination of nihlism and positism because the poem has a more negative tone in the beginning then progresses to a more positive and hopeful tone in the end.

This couldve influenced his writing because his expierience in the holocaust couldve determined how he used his choice in words in order to make the poems he did.
