Mala Zimetbaum was raised in Poland as the youngest of five children. January 26, 1918, was her birthdate. Her family moved from Poland to Antwerp, Belgium, when she was ten years old. It was there that she attended school and developed her fluency in five languages.

On July 6, Mala and Edek were thrown in jail by border police in the Beskid Zywiecki mountains near the border of Slovakia. They were brought back to the camp and assigned to different cells in block 11. Mala's wrists got slashed at the table and she smacked the SS guard in the face as she realized her life was about to end. Then they hurried her to the hospital. She did not return. While some may say she was shot, others say she died from blood loss while being transported to the hospital. "Long Live Poland!" was Edek's final words before he was hung.

Not long after Edek, Mala's husband, started making plans for their escape. Mala originally disagreed and didn't think it was a good idea, but she eventually began to love the idea. On June 24, a Saturday, the two left the camp. Edward Lubusch had given Edek an SS uniform. Lubusch was a great hidden friend of Edek's and helped the prisoners. They left the camp, with Mala dressed as if she was a Jewish guy going to his job.

Mala was well-known in the Auschwitz camp. Her reputation was kindness and giving. She always placed others before herself and always had another hand available. She was an extremely privileged prisoner. This was due to the fact that, unlike many of the SS guards, she spoke an abundance of languages very fluently. The guards respected her more since she was an excellent translator for her five different languages.

Mala was a very independent woman. She was always there for everyone who needed help and never gave up. She wasn't afraid to fight back against the Nazis and the SS guards because she knew it was not fair. She sacrificed her body and life for herself and many others to not let the SS treat her disrespectfully. Even though for the most part they were nice to her since she was always so kind and helpful. They sort of favored her since she could speak all of her languages so fluently.
